...." More than 99% of Italy’s coronavirus fatalities were people who suffered from previous medical conditions, according to a study by the country’s national health authority.

The Rome-based institute has examined medical records of about 18% of the country’s coronavirus fatalities, finding that just three victims, or 0.8% of the total, had no previous pathology. Almost half of the victims suffered from at least three prior illnesses and about a fourth had either one or two previous conditions.

More than 75% had high blood pressure, about 35% had diabetes and a third suffered from heart disease.

The average age of those who’ve died from the virus in Italy is 79.5. As of March 17, 17 people under 50 had died from the disease. All of Italy’s victims under 40 have been males with serious existing medical conditions.

...."Furthermore, stories abound of sick people in the US showing up at doctors' offices and hospital ERs, asking to be tested yet being sent away because no test is available or because they don't fit the testing criteria -- leading many to comment that the lack of testing is going to kill us all.

But we should be clear that more testing saves lives by preventing the next infection, not by allowing doctors to catch an individual patient earlier.

The blundering lack of an effective testing program in the US is an unconscionable failure and has led (and will lead) to more transmission of COVID-19."

I could have saved CNN that whole wall of text....

amazing!

Did you catch how NJSP were considering classifying this as a “disorderly conduct” charge?

Is that like reading Playboy, only for the articles?  :scratchhead:

A moment of silence, please.  This month, Playboy announced that, after 66 years, they are discontinuing their print edition.

As long as he and his administration doesn't look like a bunch of monkeys.....oops!  Too late!

No, like reading playboy only for the pictures.

Well, you'll get better information reading Playboy for the pictures, than reading CNN for, well anything accurate or factual...

Yes, I can read that. It also says "opinion"....

My issue is, he should stick to medicine and data, and not take cheap shots at "you know who" and the current administration. But since this specialist is a hardcore lefty, who donates heavily to the Dem party, and besides writing stories with cheap shots for CNN, he also writes them for Slate and NYT.   SSDD...

Plus, he rants on and on about testing and passes blame. Testing doesn't change anything, it's just a data collection activity. If you have symptoms, either from Covid or Flu, they get treated the same way. Doing more testing, like he rants about, doesn't change outcomes or treatments.

But he is sticking to medicine and data.... the data collected through............................................................ testing.

I dont think people want testing for treatment... he literally said that wasn't the point.

And I do personally think the entire US testing initiative was botched. Whether you agree with it or not, people believe that early aggressive testing can help avoid these unnecessary wide ranging quarantines if handled appropriately.

It is entirely a medical opinion, it's just one you disagree with on a political basis.

I happen to agree with this based on the simple factor of human nature -- I think you would have seen a higher compliance rate with self-quarantine, for instance, if people were certain they had the virus. Otherwise, it was too easy for them to slip into denial ("well, I wasn't tested... and it probably is just the flu... so, it's OK if I run over and visit with some neighbors today...etc.". There might also have been better ability to do more contact tracing in the early days, further blunting the virus's spread within these hot zones we're seeing. Make no mistake, we're not an autocratic society like China, so completely "containing" a virus here would be impossible anyway. But, I think earlier more widespread testing would have slowed the spread down in the current hot zones.

But, we can all argue that point 'til the cows come home! Doesn't make a lot of different, I guess, going forward. It's now "old news" - any window there may have been for aggressive testing has already closed. The U.S. health authorities know that and are already shifting their approach accordingly.

Been working around the house outside.....haven't seen a Cruiser in 4 days....must be maintaining order at the stores still open....I dunno.

During my commute last week, I did not see any police, nor were any running radar that I could not see.  Traffic was moving well in excess (20+) and thin enough to isolate a wildebeast from the herd easily.

Didn't I just read on NJ.com that they are trying to empty out the jails to avoid spread?

I was having this same "conversation" with a left leaning friend of mine.  They were obssessed that "Trump lied and said anybody that wanted test could get one" but then they couldn't.

Long story short, the CDC had criteria as to who and under what circumstances individuals would be allowed to be tested.  And individual State Health Deparments, using the CDC criteria, did turn turn quite a few people.  Where there too few testing kits.  Maybe.  Did Trump know there weren't enough kits?  Who knows.  Maybe he believed there were enough for the scenario he was thinking about (limited testing of those who fit the CDC criteria)?

My logic is similiar to Sniper's.  Not everyone who has a cough and fever should be tested.  Then every Tom, Dick and Jane who thinks they may have it winds up sitting in a doctors office or ER with other people who definetly do have it.  And if they didn't have it, well now the chances are much greater that they do.  Also, werent the test rather unreliable?  So let say you do have a cough and fever and you visit the doctor office or ER, crammed with people who do have it to get tested.  Your test comes back with a false negative.  Should you be less vigilant even though you still have a cough and fever just because your test was negative?

And if you already have a cough and a fever you should already be taking safety precautions.  Regardless if it COVID19, the flu, a sinus infection, etc, etc.  Especially if you have contact with the elderly or those with preexisting health issues.

The entire "if we only had more tests then we wouldn't be this bad of a situation" logic seems very flawed to me.

    • I very seriously doubt this has anything to do with terrorism.    1) Harbor pilots are VERY seriously vetted, and highly trained. Not to mention extremely well paid. My experience knowing a few of them, and knowing how they are recruited and screened tells me that there is a slim to highly unlikely chance that a harbor pilot would have participated in anything like that.    2) Maintenance of foreign flag ships is well known to be dubious. Especially these days. These were NOT US flag, Jones act sailors. It was (to my understanding) a largely Indian crew on that ship, with a Ukrainian Captain. Indian crews are not exactly known for being stellar.    3) The bunkers (fuel) these ships use is ‘Bunker C’, which is a heavy, dirty fuel oil that can, and usually is, pretty contaminated. This stuff ain’t your car grade gasoline or diesel fuel. It’s nasty.   It requires nearly constant filter changes and maintenance to the engine/generators. The ship took on fuel prior to departing port, which would stir up all kinds of shit in the fuel tanks, which would contribute to particulates in the fuel lines/filters.    4) I’d say the posting of the chief engineer for Maserek above was pretty spot on as far as chain of events.    This was a shitty accident, with horrible timing and outcome. Not a terror attack.
