Prep For Quarantine / Pandemic

Recommended Posts

1: Once a week we get take out or pick up to support our local restaurants which I'm certain some will not survive.

3: Ever since Sandy we keep 3 months of supplies on hand and rotate stock accordingly. A moderate supply of canned and dried goods that can be extended to 6 months in a real SHTF scenario. One of us ventures out once a week usually early before crowds get to the stores for fresh fruits vegetables and protein. We have plenty of everything we need and just replenish gradually. We increased stock in January as I read the news and was certain this was going to be a major problem here so we did a bit extra at that time.

I had to go for an MRI this morning, that was a bit disconcerting but the facility seemed to have the disinfecting protocol down pretty good. Wore a mask and used hand sanitizer liberally.

All very interesting feedback, thank you, folks!

As I told my daughter and son in law in PA - do not let the emergency stores go too low - keep augmenting them when you can, if you can while staying safe.

I think this (above) makes a lot of sense. I'll go ahead and do the Amazon order, perhaps even a bit more robustly than I was planning. What's the worst case scenario... I don't need the stuff right away and my pantry is nice and re-plumped? Not the worst thing in the world!

As she was coming down some guy was awalking around outside the lobby and mumbling - Bldg Engineer sys dont worry that is not "the one I had to beat off with the bat" yesterday and escorted her to the car.

Upon trying to leave the city it was described to me as the movie "warriorsish" with people just wnadering the streets in the street and driving through was like trying to  not hit poeple and or get swamped as they all tried to approach the car yelling at you.

She is shaken by it. - Do not discount Nat Guard on the streets of NY in areas if this goes on a LOT longer.

not my experience just relaying what I was told.

If that's even 20 percent accurate... I'm so grateful to be way out here in Hunterdon County... rather than in a major city like NY. Ugh.

Produce scares me because anyone could be touching it.  But gotta have avocados, tomatoes, lettuce, celery, cukes,  etc. I'm rethinking that now, but it would be hard not to have that and it'll be months before I have muck from the garden.

I swore off "fresh" produce a couple of weeks ago! It's not just who's touching it, but who's coughing and sneezing on it! Screw that. I loaded up on frozen veggies on my last trip. I figure if the freezing wouldn't kill a virus, the cooking process certainly would. I had also stocked up back in January on canned fruit, applesauce, etc. Honestly, I just feel it's a safer option right now. And the nutritional content of those forms is quite high. Honestly, I refuse to let "preferences" dictate my diet right now. I'm leaning 100% towards food safety.

Yeah, sneezing and coughing is really the issue, but that happens in normal times, and I can't remember the last time I have had a flu or cold.  If I stop because of that now I don't think I could ever go back ;-)  And rationally, everyone is wearing a mask now, so this should be the safest time for produce.  But I am thinking that anything with a hard skin (like cucumbers and avocados) should be OK as long as I wash it and discard the skins into the compost heap.  I can blanch things like celery and scallions (80-90°C for 10 seconds should kill anything) and skip the lettuce for awhile.  And I am cooking most of the other fresh produce anyway.

We visited a Dr's office last week and was impressed with their measures:  All chairs were removed from waiting room except a few that were in front of the registration window to force people to distance.  Everyone wearing masks.  No vital signs taken.  Dr. did not enter the room, but stood outside and we talked through open door.  We were the only people there because they are spacing appointments out.

OTOH A friend of ours saw a chiropractor -- no masks, no distancing, no visible measures taken there.

IMO, everyone should be keeping a lessons learned file / list.  Mine has things like getting the family used to eating canned goods.  They are so used to eating fresh that they currently won’t touch canned goods.

I ate some today.   I haven't had it in years, but I actually like it fried.  Kinda like thick taylor ham.

Also, Murhpy's EO about worksites is here: https://nj.gov/infobank/eo/056murphy/pdf/EO-122.pdf

Jobs with fewer than 5 workers can continue.

Masks for everyone.   Gloves for all people who are working.

Quote

Require workers and customers to wear cloth face coverings while on the premises, except where doing so would inhibit that individual’s health or where the individual is under two years of age, and require workers to wear gloves when in contact with customers or goods. Businesses must provide, at their expense, such face coverings and gloves for their employees.

For now / this time.  This has me doing a LOT of thinking.  Might be time to construct a hoop house.  I can get by on hunting / foraging for myself, but adding three picky eaters into the mix throws me into a tailspin.  Just like I can poop somewhere other than a toilet with running water, but my wife and kids wouldn't.  Gotta change the comfort level and knowledge of those in the house.

I like mine fried a little blacker!

I've liked Spam since I was a kid (over 100 years!).

When I got to my unit near the DMZ in Vietnam life was very spartan.  We ate B rations (all canned stuff) twice a day (if we were lucky) and the rest of our diet was C rations.  I found I liked powdered eggs.  If seemed most of the time we had two meats.  Spam and bologna all from cans.  I still didn't tire of Spam and still eat it.

Spam is very popular in Vietnam.  My brother works in Saigon.  He sent me a photo.  The only things with one of those anti-theft tags on in the store...we're cans of Spam.
