MOVIES FOR RELAXATION AND TO PASS THE TIME

1.OUTBREAK--Built around the fast paced search for an anti-serum for a new killer virus, OUTBREAK is a reasonably believable and well made suspense drama starring Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo and Donald Sutherland. However, this is definitely a movie with clear-cut messages: the government cannot be trusted; and, man should not tamper with nature.

2.CONTAGION-CONTAGION depicts an outbreak of a deadly virus that spreads at an extremely rapid rate. Around the world, top doctors take the challenge to stop it, including two American doctors. Homeland Security approaches one of the government doctors just in case the virus was a terrorist attack on the America. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization representative goes to China to find where the virus started and why. When the news media tells how contagious and horrible the virus is, people start to fight and kill each other for food, homeopathic vaccines and any means to save themselves. A private doctor finds a way to grow the virus, and the first step to finding the cure is made.

3. VIRUS--VIRUS is a mildly entertaining, but gory, B-movie about an alien energy being who infects the computers on a massive Russian satellite ship on the Pacific Ocean. A tugbat crew must defeat the alien and its part-human robots, or cyborgs.

4.     4. PANDEMIC-A Wonderful movie about how the entire world is infected with a virus.

5.  5.    Z NATION 2-Follows the Covid-19 survivors who are then infected with the Zombie plague

6. URINETOWN--- takes place in a time of desperation and desolation. A massive water shortage (caused by a twenty year drought) means that private toilets and toilet paper have been outlawed and the public now have to pay “for the privilege to pee”. These public amenities, as they’re known, are run by the evil Urine Good Company (or UGC) headed up by the villainous Caldwell B. Cladwell. If citizens relieve themselves in public or refuse to pay the fee, they’re sent to the infamous Urinetown.

Andromeda Strain when virtually all of the residents of Piedmont, New Mexico, are found dead after the return to Earth of a space satellite, the head of the US Air Force's Project Scoop declares an emergency. Many years prior to this incident, a group of eminent scientists led by Dr. Jeremy Stone (Arthur Hill) advocated for the construction of a secure laboratory facility that would serve as a base in the event an alien biological life form was returned to Earth from a space mission. Stone and his team - Drs. Dutton, Leavitt and Hall (David Wayne, Kate Reid, and James Olson, respectively)- go to the facility, known as Wildfire, and try to first isolate the life form while determining why two people from Piedmont (an old wino and a six-month-old baby) survived. The scientists methodically study the alien life form unaware that it has already mutated and presents a far greater danger in the lab, which is equipped with a nuclear self-destruct device should it manage to escape.

World War Z (2013)

Brad Pitt plays a former United Nations employee who seeks to find the source and cure of a viral epidemic that turns those infected into vicious, feral monsters. Clocking in at just under two hours, this one is a bit lengthy…but absolutely nail-biting from start to finish.

The Happening (2008)

A science teacher (Mark Wahlberg) and his wife (Zooey Deschanel) must survive a viral plague that causes those infected to die by suicide. The film is written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan (Signs, The Village) so expect unnerving suspense, creepy imagery, and a whopper of an ending.

Quarantine (2008)

Found-footage horror fans will really enjoy Quarantine, which follows a TV reporter and her cameraman who get trapped in a building that’s being quarantined by the Center for Disease Control. Inside are a group of humans infected by a mysterious disease that’s turned them into bloodthirsty monsters.

I Am Legend (2007)

I Am Legend follows a U.S. Army virologist (Will Smith, in one of his most popular roles) who has outrun a pathogen that was supposed to cure cancer but actually turned humans into zombies. He seeks to find a cure for the outbreak—and any survivors hiding in the shadows.

It Comes at Night (2017)

A family has secluded themselves from the outside world in light of a terrifying, widespread outbreak. But their new regime is flipped upside down when a second family shows up to the house, seeking refuge. Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott, Carmen Ejogo, and  Riley Keough star in this slow-burn thriller.

The Crazies (2010)

A sheriff and his wife (Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell) must find their way out of a small town that’s been blockaded off because its citizens have fallen victim to a toxin that turns them into vicious, zombie-like monsters. Danielle Panabaker and Joe Anderson costar in this sci-fi horror.

Carriers (2009)

Lou Taylor Pucci, Chris Pine, Piper Perabo, and Emily VanCamp star in this paint-by-numbers but nonetheless compelling tale about four survivors of a viral plague who start to turn on each other while seeking refuge from the terrifying disease.

28 Days Later (2002)

A bike courier (Cillian Murphy) wakes up a month after falling into a coma to find his city, London, completely ravaged and desolated by a “Rage” virus that turns human beings into deranged, murderous mutants. Soon he meets other survivors (Noah Huntley and Naomie Harris) and together they try to seek answers and refuge.

28 Weeks Later (2007)

A sequel to 28 Days Later, this movie takes place six months after the events of the first movie, when mankind has declared victory on the “Rage” virus. But sadly, it’s just the calm before the storm. Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, and Idris Elba star.

Cabin Fever (2002)

A group of college kids’ plans for a rowdy spring break at a remote cabin are dismantled when they become exposed to a flesh-eating virus that starts picking them off one by one. This 2002 film was the start of the profitable Cabin Fever franchise, which spawned a sequel, a prequel, and a remake.

Bird Box (2018)

This Sandra Bullock suspense rollercoaster was a hit when it came out on Netflix in December 2018. It centers on a woman (Bullock) who must survive in a post-apocalyptic universe where a widespread, mysterious pathogen causes people to die if they look it in the eye. Sarah Paulson also stars.

The Omega Man (1971)

Hollywood legend Charlton Heston stars in this epic about a doctor who is the only human survivor of an apocalyptic war. He’s surrounded by several hundred deformed nocturnal creatures and must outsmart them in order to survive. It’s very I Am Legend, if you like that film.

Blindness (2008)

Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo star in this movie, in which the world has been upended by an epidemic that causes blindness. A woman who is secretly immune to the disease follows her affected husband, a doctor, to quarantine…which is located in an abandoned mental institution.
