Want to get a FID but wary of some things

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I really want to go and begin the process to get an FID and pistol permit especially with whats going on nowadays, but I have some concerns. Particularly, that if I accidentally make an error on the FARS I could be charged. Does it ever happen to people who make mistakes on the FARS application? I would answer everything truthfully of course but we all know how anti-firearms owner NJ is and I'm paranoid that they'll look for some minor mistake and pounce.

Also I'm wondering about the address question on FARS. They want every address lived in the for the past 10 years. Does this only include permanent addresses or stuff like living at a college/grad school? And what about apartments for a year or so that I didn't change my address to?

One more thing…if I were to get a permit would this show up on employment background checks? Because that is one way to get a future job application tossed out.

Thanks

They dont look for "minor mistakes and then pounce".  Dont lie,  fill out the forms correctly. It is not rocket science. If you have been arrested before it will show up.  Get any record expunged before you apply.  Put down every address where  you received mail.  NJ gun owners information is private.

This is the main thing.

Make sure your record is clean before applying or it could be denied which may show up on a backround check. Then you'll have to go though expungement (if possible) and re-apply.

If unsure have an attorney such as Frank Pisano look over your application beforehand.

BTW- as part of the application process they may contact your present employer so be prepared. I furnished the name of a friendly manager (not my actual boss at the time) and told them to expect a call.

Nowadays I would say self employed, or unemployed .:D

I had to learn the above the hard way before I finally got my FID.

Got it, that makes sense. Fortunately my record is clean unless they check for high school detentions or something. The main thing I was worried about was the address thing that Tunaman answered.

Chewing gum in homeroom or smoking in the bathroom will definitely prevent you getting your Firearm Purchaser ID card!

I never heard of that happening.

Ok good. The employer reference in the old system is what kept me from applying a few years back.

I think they are only allowed to check if you are actually employed, there.  I don't think they can ask ANY other questions or hint at anything else.  Additionally, your employer cannot give out any other information...

But what do they say to the employer exactly?

Even if they don't reveal what its about doesn't look good to have the cops calling your place of employment.

3. Make sure the references will indeed give you a good reference.

It's not a problem anymore but the idea of the police contacting my employer is risky and honestly mostly likely a way to discourage gun ownership.

Got it. And like a previous poster said, just list any address even if it wasn't permanent (ie on a drivers license)?

I plan on using 1 family member (Explicity allowed on PD website) and 1 gun-friendly friend so it should be ok.

Thanks everyone
