NJ_Dude 192 Posted July 3, 2020 Hi, What's the law regarding the purchase, owning and carrying a 'pepper ball gun' such as a SALT gun or a TipX or a Byrna, the manufacturer/seller affirm that they can ship to NJ and are legal but I'd like to confirm that answer. Thanks
Krdshrk 3,872 Posted July 3, 2020 Legal as they're shooting paintball size rounds, and aren't more than 3/4 oz of OC. However - what's your purpose for looking to buy one?
NJ_Dude 192 Posted July 3, 2020 Hi Thanks for the reply. The ones in question will shoot paintball size balls and the purpose is to have one in the house 'just in case' since getting a permit in NJ is a PIA.
voyager9 3,417 Posted July 3, 2020 Unless you have no other options I would not rely on a paintball marker, even one that shoots OC, for self or home defense. They’re not effective or efficient. Go get the FID and P2P. Yes it’s a PITA but not impossible (unless you’re prohibited).
NJ_Dude 192 Posted July 3, 2020 I have no problem getting a permit, it' all the hoops and time that it takes.
Krdshrk 3,872 Posted July 3, 2020 If you need something better in a pinch, get a Taser Pulse or some other stun gun.

waltimus 1 Posted October 1, 2022 If you're looking for a firearm alternative go with a Pepperball VKS or a TCP. They're reliable and high powered out of the box. You can also easily tune them to increase output pressure. Byrna is unreliable and very underpowered

But you'd have to make sure the marker doesn't have too many pepper balls that it puts the total over 3/4oz of OC.
