New to NJ and its Gun Laws

Recommended Posts

Good morning!

Just wanted to introduce myself, hoping to become somewhat of a regular around these forums. I moved to NJ from KY about 5 years ago. I met my wife while in college in KY (she is from NJ), and moved back home with her once we graduated. Among many differences between the 2 states, the process of buying a gun was pretty time consuming. My family here in NJ also can't really understand why i'd ever want to be a gun owner. Not that I need their approval for anything (my wife is thankfully all for owning guns in the home), but it's just another big difference.

I have now claimed my Firearms Purchaser ID card and purchased a Beretta 92FS. Now looking to add a 1911 to my inventory and hopefully many more in the future. I joined these forums so that I can become more familiar with gun laws within the state. If anyone has a place for me to start, by all means let me know. Thanks for reading!

Welcome to the forum. Now you need to convince your in-laws that they too are the only ones responsible for their defense. My favorite cliche is, "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away."

You can start to gain a better understanding by reading through the section of the NJ Administrative Code that deals with firearms. Please note that these are not the statutes but rather a guide as to how the statutes are to be applied.

Don't forget revolvers when you are adding to your cache.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Welcome and condolences upon your arrival to NJ, "The Land that Freedom Forgot".

You can start by reading here, if you haven't already:

Really Bob?  Every wheelgun that someone else buys is one less that you can own!

I already have the common ones that normal people would buy. I'm after the more esoteric ones now.

Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

Don't worry about not knowing the acronym, most of the state needs to be taught it like they are 5.

Haha, I 100% agree!

I've never been a part of any online gun forum. So most of these abbreviations, etc. are new to me

Welcome.

What part of Kentucky?  I have relatives in Florence and Louisville.

I'm also a big fan of Mammoth.   Spent 3 days in the park a few years back, had a great time.

As to your future gun purchases, I can only add that you need to figure out what it is you like.  Don't buy something just because it's something everyone else does.

Good luck.

Very cool. I lived about a 15 minute drive away from Mammoth. Spent a lot of time their when in middle/high school.

Thanks for the advice. I have been around guns my entire life. Most of my uncles are collectors and my dad always had many different guns. I've always been a fan of the Beretta/1911's, so that's what I will stick with. But I am always open to options!

Growing up in NJ, I always thought that firearms were only for criminals and the police.  I never considered owning one until 2015 when my eyes were opened about what's really going on in this country.
