Hi all,

Not sure if this is the correct forum, so apologizes if it's not...Potentially moving from NJ to NY or CONN. I have an NJ FID and own several handguns legally here. Wondering what the legal procedure is for transferring these to NY/CONN and what i need to do for the equal permit as well.

TIA

Although CT is listed as a "may issue" state, if you meet the requirements they will issue you one.  As a "non-resident" it took 3 months to process my permit.  However, you have to be careful when navigating their regulations.  https://portal.ct.gov/DESPP/Division-of-State-Police/Special-Licensing-and-Firearms/Special-Licensing-and-Firearms

You can not bring any handguns into NY until you receive your NY permit. How long it takes to get that is dependant on what county you are planning to move to.

In addition only one evil feature on a semi auto rifle. Detachable mag is one.

You can get some info here https://nygunforum.com/ plus you can ask me anything I've had a house and a pistol permit there for many years. I split my time between there and NJ.

I've shipped handguns to dealers in NY for people who were moving there. From what I've been told, they will sit at the dealer there until you have your permit approved - that could be several months. The good news is you should be able to get a carry permit if you're far enough away from NYC.

Not sure how CT works with people moving in....

Every NY county can do things as they see fit. In Fulton which is where my permit was issued I brought in copies of my NJ P2P and they added them to the permit. I just left them in NJ until I had my permit in my hand. I realize not everyone has that sort of option.

As a side note I received my NY permit in about 40 days versus the 4 months it took to get my NJ FPID and P2P's.
