  1. Canceling my qual at Shooters. Spoke to them today for clarification and was told:

    1) 100 rounds

    2) 10 yards and closer

    3) mix of single/off hand/two hand shots

    4) only qual and list one gun

Most of which is VERY different from what I was told a few weeks ago when I booked the appointment.

Was also told that they have 2 different instructors that do different things and they won't tell you which instructor you're getting and which protocol you're shooting.

Not thrilled with the lack of transparency from them, so I'll go somewhere else and qual some other guns.

So it appears you may get the instructor that has you shoot 2 hand from ready and will list whatever guns you have. Or you'll get the other one that has you shoot single hand and lists one gun. And you won't know until you show up.

    Super duper.

I don't care about the discrepancies with single hand shooting, I mostly care about the multiple gun thing.  With that, I might as well go somewhere and shoot multiple quals.

  2. Had the qual at Bob's today with a fellow named Bob that was super nice. Really chill experience, had great convo with him while I was shooting. Got a bit distracted at 25 yds and ended up 249/250.

    7/10/15/25 yards

Mentioned what OC reportedly did with issuing a letter limiting what you can carry, one of the instructors chimed in and said that's illegal.

Have to fly out to TX this weekend for their qual and then I'm at Shooters next week to see what's up with the multi-gun thing that they reportedly arent doing any longer, and to qualify with something else. Will post how it goes.

Also, I forgot to mention that at Shooters yesterday, the instructor said they wouldn't list more than one handgun on the sheet that goes to the state because some folks have been denied for having more than one. He then stated you could carry anything you legally own (as has been discussed here), which I questioned (also based on what has been discussed here) and he didn't seem to think it was going to be a problem. IANAL and YMMV...

I know what the statute says and I know what Bob's and Shooters are saying...but I am a little concerned it somehow won't matter, as others have said,  that we'll carry something other than what's specified on the permit and if we get pinched for whatever reason we'll be royally boned.

Being out of state and able to buy pistols on a whim, I've amassed 5 or 6 handguns I'd potentially carry depending on season and mood. All of which I shoot regularly throughout the month.

I signed up at Shooters so I could have 4 listed. Oh well.

Is there a way to edit post #1 (OP) with instructions how/where/process for getting their permit (in/out) of state?

Also, could we list approval times and how many have been approved to date?

Sifting through 42 pages of conflicting information takes a lot of time with no real conclusion.

Maybe a spreadsheet that's on a public drive sort of thing. I've seen that on numerous forums for tracking other things...though I know most here have a thing with "being tracked"

Right now, out of state folks apply to the non toll road NJSP barracks closest to their house.

NJSP detective (Barrington suoer nice and helpful) handling my address change told me I had two options, Hamilton or some other barracks and the detective suggested Hamilton because they would have more familiarity with processing CCW apps

I like the PPK, just wish it was lighter.

The PPK with the aluminum frame in 7.65 is too nice of a gun to daily carry.

My PPKS is ridiculously accurate and easy to shoot.  The size is fine for me but it really is the weight,  at least for summer carry.

I'm with you on the L model being too nice (and expensive and rare) to carry. I have a 69 IIRC PP .32 that I prefer the feel of, but I won't carry it for similar reasons.

For me, the carry options are: Beretta 85bb, SA Hellcat RDP, PPKS in winter, or I may add a p365x to the fray and carry that...I'm not overly concerned with capacity or caliber

I like the Ruger LCP Max but am looking to keep something slightly larger on my person

NJ needs to adopt the PA CCW qual for a carry permit.

The PA, meaning Pennsylvania? I have a PA LTC and while I appreciate the ease with which it was issued...the complete lack of qualification is concerning.

I was recently in a LGS in PA picking up a pistol. A woman walked in looking for a holster, she spoke in a fashion that suggested some level of slowed cognition. She told the employee her gun was loaded. He asked her to go outside and unload the firearm and to come back in to try holsters. She comes back in, hands the gun to the employee, he racks it and there's still a round in the chamber...

There really should be some degree of familiarity and ability evidenced before being permitted to carry.

I think the Texas LTC qual isn't bad, 50 shots from ready position in timed groups from 3/7/15 yds and you need to have safe handling and TX law training that can be done online for ~$50. Drop the timed groups and it's a reasonably easy COF.

I'm pro 2A but the country is clearly falling into Idiocracy levels of durka durka...so I'm not a fan of handing carry permits out to anyone with a pulse and no criminal history.

  7. Back on topic...booked a qual at Shooters and we'll see how it goes...was told to bring 100 rds per person...and yes, the distances are 5/7.5/10...

Was also told the gun you shoot with gets registered,  you can bring other guns with you, but it's up to the instructor as to whether or not they'll get listed without being shot...

What are the details on Bob's?  Distance, # of shots, passing score, etc.

My problem is I haven't been to a range for the past 3 years due to the pandemic bullshit and lack of a shooting partner. :(

I don't really care so much about NJ carry since I don't go anywhere nasty in NJ, but I need the NJ CCW to get a PA non resident permit for when I have to go to Philadelphia, which is nasty!

    B27 Target

    Ready Position

    15 shots at 7 yds

    20 shots at 10 yds

    10 shots at 15 yds

    5 shots at 25 yds

    Need 200/250 to pass

  9. I have two quals scheduled. Only because one opened up at Range 129 after I booked at Bobs.

I have Range 129 in early August and Bob's mid August.

It looks like Range 129 uses the Q target and features firing from draw, single dominant and support hand shooting and starts at 1 yard?

Bob's is B27, shoot from ready. No single hand shooting. Bob's also posted the statute about carrying any gun once you qualify.

Not yet sure how I want to handle this...

The guidance you are reading is not official guidance.  See this thread:

    and this post:

The qualification disparities may or may not be an issue, we'll see as people get approved/denied...but this gun you intend to carry thing is an issue.

Some ranges, all listed on the NJSP website, have conflicting reports on the gun limitation. GFH seems pretty connected and says you can only carry what you qualify with...but then some ranges in South Jersey are posting the statute that suggests you can carry any gun you own after you're issued your permit.

For me, this is an area that needs real clarification. I have a qual scheduled in August at a South Jersey range and am debating what I should bother qualifying with...especially since I'm considering buying a different carry gun for warmer weather.

Also, for what it's worth, a super helpful NJSP firearms detective has been emailing me about my FID address change and ccw came up...he specifically told me that the Contributors Case Nunber is your last name and date of app...so DoeMMDDYY

  11. I'll echo ammoseek, that's what I've used recently with success. Biggest factor for me has been trying to find free or low cost shipping. When you factor in tax and shipping the CPR shoots up pretty quickly.

Have found some good deals on range ammo, CCI Blazer and Geco (ammoshoponline I know there are conflicting thoughts on them but I had a great experience). For home defense ammo, I just buy whatever I like when there's a decent per box deal because I'm not buying a ton of it.

  12. Haven't seen anything for Woodbury on here or in general...

Applied 1/12/22 for 1 FID and 1 handgun permit online

    References received 1/12/22

    Fingerprints on 1/20/22

I reached out to Woodbury PD on 2/18 and they reported having received the first stage of the background check on 2/3, and that apps have tripled etc, usually its 30 days but there could be delays. And that's all I have so far...will update as it goes. The PD was very quick to response and thoughtful in their response. In my 10 years in the town, they seem to be a well run unit, so we'll see how much longer this will take. I may send a letter to the chief early next week. There's a sale on a 92x perf that I really want to take advantage of considering the crazy local markups I've seen (1700)

Woodbury hasn't requested anything further of me, and I was told everything is with the detectives for the last step before going to the Chief for approval. Would not take payment until approved.
