  1. Placed my order for the new M&P 22 today (12 rd model). Dealer had to order, so I will receive in about 1 week.....cant wait !!

(I decided NOT to get the Ruger SR22 for two reasons: minimal availability, and just too small for my large hands)

Hoping the Smith & Wesson turns out to be a winner ! Will let you all know my experiences ASAP.

  2. Gun is made by Walther, and has a cheap zamak (pot metal) slide like the Walther P22. It definitely feels good in the hand, but for me can't go for the cheap slide. Go with the new Ruger SR22....aircraft-grade aluminum slide and much better overall quality. Also, excellent reviews so far !!

I plan on ordering mine from Jim Flynn as soon as my permit arrives (hopefully soon).

  3. I just cleaned mine after this thread reminded me i put it away dirty. It's so easy to do now, it takes a couple times to really get the hang of it. I feel so bad whacking it with a 2x4 to get the barrel on/off but hey, it works lol.

I'm in the market for a .22 cal, but the whole lengthy, involved breakdown procedure for the Ruger MKIII or the Browning Buckmark, is a total turn-off. I'll pass on these, even though I know they are great guns at the range. Its too bad they didn't consider the disassembly involved when they designed it. Especially since the .22 is an inherently dirty round.

I'm looking to get the new Ruger SR22 when my new permit arrives.

  4. I am probably the one person who will say this..... I have owned 2 Ruger MK II/III 's ...... neither would run 100%, no matter what ammo I put thru them. And even if they did, the work you have to do in order to clean them make em a "NO SALE" in my book.....

I bought the M&P22 to compliment my FS 9mm, and it has far exceeded my expectations....... not only does it run at 100%, it field strips as easy as its Big Brother.

I've heard pluses and minuses about the Walther-built M&P22. I'm hesitant to get the M&P22 since it seems to have the same internals as the Walther P22, which has a cheap pot-metal slide. Seems like they needed to get to a price point and skimped on the slide material, which is a shame. I do like the look of the M&P22, although also wish they included the adjustable backstrap feature, like it's bigger siblings (9 and 40).

Seems like you've had very good experience with it, so this is why I am CONFUSED ! :-)

  5. Best all around for what?

Range sessions? Bullseye? 22 rimfire steel matches? plinking? training?

Most versatile? I would probably say the M&P 22, although that is based solely on looks, and initial functionality. Long term reliability is hard to establish as the gun is still relatively brand new. Having it look and feel just like a real M&P 9/40/45 is a great plus as a training tool, and uses the same holsters.

Yeah, I didn't want to say "Best Range Gun", because we all know the Ruger MKIII or Browning Buckmark most likely have an advantage over the smaller, shorter-barrelled guns. Just wanted to see how everybody defines "Best All-Around" gun.

  6. How does the grip on the SR22 compare to that of the Walther P22?

And where did you find an SR22 in stock? I haven't been able to find any yet.

Saw the SR22 at a gun shop in PA. They actually had it sold and the person was going to pick it up that evening, but they opened up and let me check it out. I don't have any experience with a Walther P22, but its supposed to be almost the exact same size. I know you would be MORE impressed with the Ruger's quality of materials and workmanship once you see it....its awesome !

  7. OK, I'm going against my inital thought.... Now, I like the Ruger SR22 ! I know, "this guy can't make up his mind". Yes, you are correct, though, just like the Presidential primary season, the one you may like today, you might not like tomorrow.

Anyway, been reading a TON of GREAT things about the Ruger SR22, and so I believe THATS the one I will purchase. My one complaint was that I was amazed how small the grip is, although I was thinking I could always do grip tape if necessary. Hey, who knows, maybe it won't even be necessary.

I think it was also such a big difference in size compared to my BEAUTIFUL, WORK-OF-ART Beretta 92A1, that it surprised me. Then I thought more and came to the conclusion that its only a .22 and why not. Also, the quality of this gun is absolutely stunning, and surprising for a $300 gun !

Anyway, back on the Ruger SR22 .....for now at least :-)

  8. Held the Ruger SR22 today at a gun shop, and I must say, I was rather disappointed. As another person said earlier, it was very small and thin. I have semi-large hands, and this thing felt unfortunately like a toy. I wanted to like it, but just can't get past the dimunitive size. The gun's components looked like very high quality.

OK, strike the ruger off the list !

    Now its the Sig/GSG 1911-22, Colt 1911-22, or the SW M&P 22, and I CAN'T DECIDE !!!! :-)

For those that own a Sig or GSC, any issues or problems?

  9. I agree with a prior post, try out and feel a H&K P30. Before I bought my Beretta, I looked at the H&K....sweet, sweet gun, but was above my budget. Too bad, because it felt amazing in my hand.....never shot it though.

I like the idea of getting a .22 cal. They are cheap too. I'm also looking for another and have been focusing on a Glock 17 or 19. I shot them both before, really liked them, now just need to decide which one to go with....probably the 17.

  10. +1

I totally agree with Glenn on this... Skip the .40 and go right to a .45! The .45 is much more of a pleasure to shoot and not snappy like the .40. I just plain dislike the .40 round... it is not fun to shoot, for me. Have you tried shooting a 1911 in .45??? I guarantee you'll love it. Or if you want to stick with a more modern pistol design, there are lots of other pistols chambered in .45 that you can try out. M&P, XD, XDm, etc, etc, etc...

There's nothing wrong with sticking with the 9mm for a second pistol, as well... If I were to buy another 9mm pistol right now, I'd be looking at either the CZ 75B, M&P 9mm or a Sig P226. All very nice pistols!

You also can't go wrong with a nice revolver, if you're into wheel guns. If you're looking for a "new" experience in handgun shooting, that will be different from your Beretta, then this is also a good way to go.

    Nicely said...Thanks Tony !!

  11. I have a M&P .40 and am very happy with it.

Test fired a few others before deciding on this.

Why not stick w/ 9mm tho?

I was looking for adding a new shooting experience with the different caliber, since I already have the 9mm. So your advice would be to stick with the same? I know that would certainly make bringing/stocking the ammo much easier.

    I will look at the M&P .40

    thanks,

  12. Have you held or shot any of your choices? I would start with that, then go from there.

You can get 400 people saying this gun or that gun, but in the end, it's the gun that you feel most comfortable with and you enjoy shooting the most

Yes, the only one I've shot is the XD, which I kind of liked. I do agree with you that 400 people might give me 400 opinions, although I still believe its helpful to hear everybody's opinion so that I can better narrow down my choice. This is the same process I used before I eventually went with the Beretta. I like to listen to the people on this forum who undoubtedly have more experience than I do.

  13. Looking to add to my collection with possibly a new .40 cal. Already have a Beretta 92A1 (9mm...LOVE IT!!), and would like to compliment it with another, different gun. Would like to keep in the $400 - $600 range, and am thinking of the following:

    - SA XD or XDm

    - SW M&P

    - CZ

    - Beretta PX Storm

    - revolver (.38/.357) ?

At this point, I'm open to any and all suggestions. Let me know your thoughts.

    thanks,
