  1. My buddy carries the XDm .45 3.8 he loves it, I carry the Shield .40 if you're in Ocean County your welcome to shoot it

  2. If you think cops are "para military" organization, you are absolutely correct. We have always been that way. We wear uniforms, have a chain of command, salute and so-forth. And if you believe we are militarized now, you are ignorant of police history. You only have to go back to the 1920's and 30's to see the reality of life then.

So, this article about how terrible SWAT teams are, starts out with discussiong an event in which an under-trained, improperly equipped multi agency narcotics crew served a warrant and things went downhill fast. This is my shocked face.

There are plenty of lessons to be learned from that event, but the warrant service he starts his article with was not a SWAT issue. I know that to most journalists, a raid jacket that says "Police" is equal to "SWAT, but that is simply not the case. When non-SWAT investigative units with neither equipment, standards, nor training are involved in operations far over their heads bad things have a tendency to happen.

Like it or not, we do have a class of serious criminals who present a hell of a risk in this country. And, lets face it, enforcing the Law is not a people pleasing business, it is a compliance business. There are tasks that require a different level of preparation, and different skill sets. There can be no doubt for the need of well trained, highly motivated cops who do not particpate in community stroking. With the evisceration of the patrol function - affirmative action, productivity, lowering of standards, as well as the non-confrontational bent that most departments follow, the need for tactical teams is not a luxury, but an absolute necessity.

As a member of a SWAT team I'd like to believe that other SWAT teams in this country are held to a higher standard, and I know many that truly are - I also know some that are straight up clowns. I know that a fair number of these "teams" are teams in name only, and posses neither the quality, professionalism or training to conduct any type of policing, but, let us not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Yes, there have been a few pretty clear errors of judgment, and maybe worse. The guys doing this job are still human beings, capable of mistakes, lapses in judgement, and plain bad luck. Why don't we treat their mistakes like every other profession - Drs, clergy, teachers, carpenters, lawyers, mechanics, etc... gets treated when they screw up. Deal with those situations as the bad occasional incidents they are, and be done with it. Hammer the hell out of people who make BS reports and lie to use LE to "prank" or take revenge on someone ie: SWATTing.

    Regarding the Department of Education:

First, let me say that I dont believe the Dept Of Education has their own SWAT team. See above - a reporter sees a windbreaker with "Police" on it or a Cop with a rifle and it is automatically a SWAT guy. (Side note: I also think it's funny that we gnash our teeth and wring our hands about how often the media gets "it" wrong about certain things, but other topics are swallowed whole and with vigor. Not an ounce of the critical thinking we normally apply to their articles )

Now, why the Dept. Of Education needs a budget for arms, ammo, and training.

Most Fed agencies have criminal investigators within their ranks. They are responsible not only for internal investigations but are also farmed out to Joint Task Forces so that their expertise (subject matter experts) can be utilized, which results in more efficient investigations and prosecutions. Not every Cop/investigator can know all the nuances of all the laws in all the agencies/departments in the nation. Some of the specialized knowledge of other Government entities is so specific to their field of endeavor that one simply cannot be up to speed on what they do as a general investigator/Police.

If you are investigating an environmental crime do you want the EPA or the SS investigating? Or how about the EPA investigates an environmental disaster that takes place on the highway, should the Dept. of Transportation help, or let the EPA go it alone? There is a problem with a nuke plant? Should the Department of Energy send some one to assist or do the State Police have it all under control?

Most non-federal agencies can not enforce federal law on their own. They can only do it if cross appointed and/or they are part of a joint task force. This will vary from state to state, but is generally true. For example, note the difference between detaining on a federal arrest warrant and a search warrant service or on-view PC based arrest. There are a lot of federal departments with their own LE functions, in part due to "subject matter expert" issues i described above and in part due to limited authority.

Personally, limited and fragmented authority is our friend from a civil rights viewpoint. One of the worst thing that I can think of in terms of creating a system without adequate checks and balances would be a federal entity that looks like a really big state police entity. Would you want to see the DOJ doing anything in obscure areas of the law without the assistance of an agency with expertise in that area?

The education people may end up dealing with pretty big dollar amounts as most of the small time/deadbeat students kind of stuff is done as civil collection anyway.

Best way to put it bro

  3. Are you a Fed? If so you should already know about carrying on a commercial aircraft. Before I retired I always carried on the plane wherever I was going in the US, business or pleasure. We had to take some on line test after 9/11. If you are state or local you need a letter from your chief that you're on official business and other requirements which I'm not sure of now.

If you're state or local travelling for pleasure the rules are no different than those for non-LEO.

I don't plan on physically carrying on the plane, only when I get to Vegas for the flight she will be secured under the plane

  4. Im flying to Vegas in September, and I don't go anywhere without carrying. That said my question is simple but the airline regulations like NJ Gun Laws are vague to be soft. The airline states they charge you the price of one checked bag for transportation of a firearm. My question is if I put my handgun in a hard case then in my checked luggage do they charge me for 2 bags or one? Sounds stupid I know but I'd like to know and the airline has one of those stupid online auto chats as opposed to a customer service number.

  5. A TSA officer, not a valet, would inspect a car.

And, it is only a matter of time until terrorists realize that the front side of an airport terminal is a soft target with just much potential impact (as blowing up a plane) during certain times, but without the hassle of trying to get through a checkpoint.

No they actually have the valet inspect the car after parking they hold the signs at valet that say your car has been searched one valet interviewed said TSA agents ordered him to search the car

  6. Ill be going for part time SOG myself when the chance arises I already run and 8 minute mile with the ability to run 6 or so miles without the need to stop. For getting my running up I would hit the pavement, jog the distance between 2 telephone poles, full bore run between the next 2 then walk between the next 2 I would continue this for a good 2+ miles. I also lift daily box and use speed rope, skip the soy milk we only drink almond milk in our house, as far as supplements I use NO Xplode

  7. don't look at the bellyband holster, its tempting but is more hassle than help. I am getting an XDm for my ccw but I have recently got to handle an XDs and that thing is SWEET!! may be time to consider having more than one handgun!!

3 guys in my department have XDs' only thing I can say is after watching all of them qualify with it, I wouldn't bet my life on that gun

  8. IF you can retreat from the threat you are required too, UNLESS you are in your dwelling. You cannot be expected to retreat to safety in your home by the state, so you must only prove the threat. Out side the home you must prove you could not retreat AND the threat to life. Basically you have two criteria to meet out side the home and only one inside the home.

See this just shows how screwed up nj law is as I always construed it the way I explain right through my 2C classes and the Academy now that you and digz showed it differently I understand

  9. Digz you both posted the same thing, in other words you can't kill someone for just breaking in to steal your stuff, and if you shoot you better pray they have a weapon on them because the prosecution in this state will flat out say if all he had was his fists how was your life threatened while pointing a gun at him

  10. I was wondering about this myself but what is considered in commission of the crime. If you use it in a home defense situation and are forced to save your life by shooting someone as a last resort could this be considered a crime?

"If you have time to put on body armor then you had enough time to find an exit from your home." That's what the prosecutor will be saying

  11. Reason you want to pocket carry? I conceal carry a S&W shield in a IWB holster and you would never know. I find it pretty comfortable.

Have you checked out the Sig 938? Not the cheapest gun but it sure is sweet.

This, the shield is my EDC when I'm in civilian clothes and with a good rig it feels natural almost like its not there

  12. There is no basic area to study the biggest part of the exam is the psych area. Answer objectively take your self out of the frame answer how you think they want you to. I took the exam 3 years ago got my scores the following may started the hiring process in September and eventually started the academy February of 2012, I now have over a year on the job and will be taking the exam again just to attempt to get on with my town.

  13. Just a heads up...

    5-point Vet preference,

    Some College

    5 years experience in custody

and I scored high on the test...

Was still told I wasn't "qualified" to work county or state and to retake the test next year it comes up....

IMO the Civil Service test is a way for NJ to rape its citizens of money in the hopes of getting a job. I took the test 3 years ago at TR East school. There was close to 7000 people there that day ALL who paid $35+ fee per additional consideration area (County corrections, state corrections, police etc.) Then we all took basically the SAME EXACT TEST. Of those people how many actually got hired? I turned to the Feds and never looked back. However NJ CO's make more than Feds, most other states that is not the case. NJ and Cali state CO makes more than Fed CO in those states, everywhere else we make more... plus you can transfer to a different prison if you decide to leave the peoples republic (sometimes it is on their dime too)... Just saying there are other options if you are looking to get into this field.... Then again the paperwork you have to do for the federal background investigation is FAR more extensive than what your dealing with now.... either way.... GOOD LUCK!

I was hired off that test and I was one of those people at TR East.... I have no experience and I'm not a vet it's all in what you score and how well you do on the psych and all the other fun stuff

  14. Soooo in one hand you are saying the tape doesnt show everything but in the other you are saying the "raid" is still in the process which ISN'T showed in the footage provided....sooo what is it man are you going by what the video shows or are you going by what you think.

The footage shows them blocking off an area because the police are in the process of getting ready to enter a building that robbery suspects are held up in, not from the tape not what I think that is what's happening at the time the filming is happening which is probably why these cops were on edge
