  1. Just as the title says, I'm looking for one of these and am spinning in circles with differences.  Anyone have any solid recommendations/experiences?
Pistol will be used for a little general fun but mostly as a static steel gun.  I really need to beat my buddy and need as much help as I can get in doing so.  He's a beast with his Buckmark.

FWIW, and not that it really matters as very few will actually read this, but I'm only interested in one of these pistols.  Not interested in anything else at the moment.

Thanks Bully.  After adjusting top pin as high as it will go I am still shooting high groups.  After Googling it appears my peep sight might need adjustment.  At this point I plan on aiming low this Sunday and seeing how it goes.  Not ideal but I won’t have time to have anyone look at it prior.  Then regardless whether I pass or not I will sign up the next week for a lesson and tuning.

For lessons, as said, I recommend Stark.

For tuning/adjustment, Targeteers or the shop where you purchased.

    Good luck.

I registered for the test this a Sunday.  I went to an indoor range in Saddle Brook which is 45 mins away.  I shot high groups by 6 inches at 20 yards.  They are loose groups but all were high.  I then aimed at bottom of paper target and they hit on the bullseye level...just all a round it though but not bad for a beginner.  I just gone done moving the top pin up slightly.  Going back tomorrow to see how I did and bringing an Allen wrench.  Still need to read the material, do a handbook and study.  Still exercising.

hopefully I pass Sunday.  If not, I will register for the next week but I am running out of time.  If I pass, I am immediately buying a target so I can practice outdoors at WMA and near home.

    Good deal.  Good luck.

Remember, those guys at the testing site want to pass you.  They really do.  With everything other than archery, all they are concerned about is safe handling.  Archery is about proficiency but I really do recommend you relax.  They want you in the woods.

It sounds like you need a sight adjustment.  No big deal.  FWIW, 50 is more than adequate for hunting. Don't kid yourself.  If I were to get another compound, I would buy a 40-50 and crank it tight which would probably put me at 51/52.  I'd hunt it for the rest of my life.

Take a good look at Stark Archery in Hackensack.  Jay is an excellent instructor.  He can get you squared away.  Good critique without making you feel like a complete mess.  If you want to meet up there on a Sunday, drop me a PM.

  4. Well....

As you know, the answers are all pretty dependent on what he is trying to accomplish.  Any of the modern/fast 6's or 6'5's will do the trick.  It can be done with an 18" .308, of course, but it's gonna be more difficult than doing it with a 26" 6.5Creedmoor.
Optics... Take your pick.  If he's looking to bang steel on the cheap and give himself a little challenge, an SWFA fixed 10 will do the job.  If he's looking to shoot groups, he's gonna need better glass with more mag.  Vortex Viper PST in 5-25 is a very versatile optic that will do the job and do it at a reasonable price point.  Don't be afraid of buying used and letting someone else take the depreciation hit.
Gun...  Any reasonably well built semi or bolt will tag steel.  More precision costs more money.  Savage 10 or 12, Remington 700; those would be my go to recommendations for aftermarket support and salability if it's not his game.

Feel free to send a PM if you like.

  5. @Noobwithquestions You may want to fill your profile out so other members can know where you're from.  If you have other questions, location can be very helpful(it also adds credibility).

Cool rifle, BTW.  Is it strictly a display piece or do you plan on shooting it?  Where do you shoot?  If you're able to on a Monday, I'm happy to guest you in to Cherry Ridge so you can run some rounds thru it at 100/200/300 yards.  Get to see what it's capable of.  Just shoot me a PM if interested with contact info.

Yeah...  no.  The trigger on a HP is totally different.  Ergos as well.

And yes, I know you're mostly busting chops.

  7. Imagine a CZ75 and a 1911 had a baby outside of their family lines...
I may have to save up for one of these.

    https://danwessonfirearms.com/product/dwx/

It started as an experiment — a grand melding of Dan Wesson and CZ pistols. Borrowing the crisp single action fire control group of a DW 1911 and combining it with the ergonomics and capacity of a CZ, the resulting pistol emerged as something great.

Designed initially for competition use, the DWX has evolved into much more than that, with both full-size and compact variants. Its locked breech barrel system is simple, ditching the standard 1911 link system and using CZ-style takedown via the slide stop. The easier take-down will be familiar to any hammer-fired CZ owner, as is removing the Match-grade barrel due to the bushing-less barrel system that resembles a P-10 or P-09/P-07. Double-stack magazines boost the capacity of the full-size to 19+1 with flush bases, and many standard 1911 parts enable gunsmiths and competitive shooters to tune the X just the way they like it. Sights are easily customized, using a 1911-style dovetailed sight in the front and a CZ Shadow 2 style sight cut in the rear.

With the grip angle and contours that have made the CZ 75 a stand-out in the realm of pistol ergonomics, the DWX is a natural fit to most hands. The full-size DWX uses standard CZ 75 grips, while the compact DWX uses those from a 75 Compact. Corresponding magwells for the 75 series are compatible as well.
With so many ways to tune and customize, the DWX is sure to shine in USPSA Limited Division!

Full-size DWX pistols use a magazine based on the P-09/P-10 F, while compact variants use that of a 75 Compact.

  8. What twist is your 223?
I shoot 80’s from a 7 twist at 600 pretty well for a guy that doesn’t shoot particularly well.

I agree with you on the Creed vs the PRC. For around here it’s really not worth it. That said, I would also encourage you to look at a 6. Either a 6Creed or even a 243. Given that you reload, either are a great choice.

I believe Peterson makes 6C brass. Others it’s a simple neck down and you’re ready to roll.

Contact Nick at NE Reloading. He’s a Jersey guy with a really good selection of bullets. Email him for anything you don’t see listed. He carries more that his site says.

    Good luck.

  9. Good on you for following through and starting out.  It's not easy but it is fun.

Good luck if you go out this season.  Shoot me a PM if you have any questions.  I'm currently shooting a crossbow but will be transitioning to a trad/longbow in the next month or so if all goes to plan.

  10. My old boss had a brazed (I believe) steel Bontrager in "Pink Camo" that I would love to own.  I'd want the frame to hang on the wall as I have not ridden in years.  Probably kill my self trying.  I came relatively close back when I did ride and I have a lot more weight to have land on my neck going over the bars nowadays.

  11. I saw Corrosion of Conformity at some shithole just outside of Dover.  Them and a couple of other bands.

Bad Brains at The Ritz.  NYC, not Jersey, but it was a good night.  Possibly GBH there as well.
Music that I haven't listened to in a very long time.

I've probably seen some other stuff that I can't remember.  I was never much for "going out" except for my stint being employed by U. Sam.  And at that point it was mostly clubbing and such.  Or, as much as it could be being it was Killeen Texas.

Warden is NJ compliant. Only works with SF Brakes though.

These devices are collectively knows as “blast shields” or are sometimes called a “blast diffuser”.

Griffin makes one that will attach to any muzzle device that accepts a mil-spec Blank Firing Adapter (BFA).

It won’t make anything quieter, but it will direct the sound and “blast” downrange instead of back at the shooter.

Keep in mind that there is no free lunch. The benefit of the redirection of the blast will slightly increase the felt recoil (subjectively).

    If it's a 223, what's the worry?

I, at one time, had a brake with front ports... KAW somethingorother.  It was awesome especially with subs.  An RO came over and told me I should check for squibs, it was that quiet at the line.

And recoil with a 223 AR is really nothing at all, FWIW.
