    Just to update anyone who may have been interested in doing the same, I just got done vacuuming my car with my 5.8 amp ridgid vac and my new 1000w harbor freight inverter didn't miss a beat. Out of an abundance of caution, I took readings of the battery to make sure I didn't drain too much. Barely drained any with the motor running. Such a cool feature to the car, really glad I did it. Worst part of the install was finding a good spot to run cable though the firewall. I'm no electrician or car guru, but I was able to do it.. Give it a shot.Next I want to buy a portable jumper/inflator in case I forget to turn the inverter off.Oh and the 1000w harbor freight generator : DSent from my iPad using Tapatalk

    AN audio amp is a different load from an inverter. The capacitor is a band aid designed for that load. An amp doesn't continuously draw even 30A. Some more than that but it's not a continuous draw. It does work to some degree to prevent headlight dimming but most people put it for show (which is why they have the blue LEDs and the voltage meter).

     

     

    But I'm also running a cobra 1500 watt converter on the same wiring ( see my very first post ). It powered almost my whole apartment including my fridge during sandy without a hiccup. It has a voltage meter for input and output and never went over 1000watts but it had to draw some high current for a long period of time I'm sure while the car was off. That doesn't include all the other applications I've used it for.

     

    I'm almost sure by the way it is discussed here in this thread my car battery or altanator, fridge should have died in some way but still runs on. Could I be just lucky? Will my car catch on fire?

     

    I do have full confidence in my car that the next storm will perform like it has done in the past no matter what is said here about wiring and what can't be done. I'm not an EE and don't know it all but I do know what has worked for me in the past and believe book knowledge is only half the story.

     

    I would like to know the scientific reason why it works for me and how come it haven't killed my battery all these years or popped my cap( look at that cap it's been around for a long time that's why no lights of volt meter on it.) into a million pieces.

    That's not bad at all. Only problem I see is you still got to get gass and fill it. I might get one just to have a back up but I like my lil set up.

     

    Not to step on any toes but you EE guys, can you explain to me why my set up has worked with no problems when y'all say 4 guage is no good and battery wont charge and my capacitor is just a bandaid?

     

    But to be fair my Altanator was reround to but out 130 amps from the stock 90 amp and the wires from my alt to batt. Is 4 guage and ground from battery to block and chassis also is 4 guage.

     

    But that's only good when the car is running. I ran everything while the car was off with no problems. Like I said not to step on any toes but would like to here where maybe I can improve or not.

    Gents,I've been thinking about investing a few bucks into a little battery system that I could take camping and use at my apartment in power outages. At first I was just thinking of getting an inverter and hooking up to my car battery when need some electricity on the road. Did some more reading and seems deep cycle batteries such as marine batteries are better suited for these uses. I don't want to just go buying things and see what works and doesn't. I'd be interested in charging the battery via AC in my apt, as well as with my cars alternator and maybe even solar. Not sure how feasible this is. If anyone runs a setup like this and cares to chime in, that'd be helpful. ThanksSent from my iPad using Tapatalk

     

    I know you guys want to help O/P but this thread is getting confusing. For going camping and running a few things in power outages maybe full sine wave with 6 batterys in an apartment might not work without a way to charge them. If he doesn't want to install a converter in his/her car maybe a extra battery to converter in the home and when it needs charging take battery to running car and hook up jumper cables and charge the battery up bring back into home. I have done this in the past and it worked fine. Till I had to charge the battery.

     

    That's why I decided to install in the car. I can run a 25 foot power cord in a window and when the battery gets low the converter makes a loud beeeeeeeeeeeeeep noise and I can start the car without loosing power in my home.

     

    Now just to let you guys know I ran tv's, desktop pc, cable boxes, a fridge, fluorescent bulb lamps, and charged phones,iPods, iPads on a modified sine wave converter and nothing went dead. I believe because these devices have some sort of power supply before any main boards in the devices they had no problems.

     

    Now I read that the motor will heat up like fridges but I never felt the motor and the motor never ran nonstop so my fridge kept my food cold and did not die either.

     

    If I was gonna run my house on battery banks with an inverter and solar power to charge on a daily and nightly basis then yes I want the tru sine wave but for little things I know my little 1500 watt converter ran all I have stated when I needed it.

     

    I hope this thread does help some people out. I kept my install simple, mobile and easy to maintain. Because I live in an apartment where battery banks and solar power or even generators ( not easy to store and to bring in the home at night so it didn't get stolen and the smell of gas would be horrible ) just is not reality for me in an apartment.

     

    The cool part is I install car audio and computer repair on the side and having the inverter in the car means I can run power tools like drills and saws or plug in a laptop and show a customer how to take care of there laptop with out battery's dying. Or my next step is to remove my head unit and install a touchscreen to a custom pc build and have a carputer running. Now that's bad @ss.

     

    Good luck all, storm season is coming. Be prepared and start setting up water and power.

    As far as batteries go, I've got the car in 2004 and changes the battery right away because of the stereo system I installed. That one went bad in 2010 and the second battery( bought same one ) is still going strong.

     

    The red Capacitor as others stated is sort of a line Conditioner. With the long cable from the battery to the back when the amp draws current to Certain voltage it releases energy very quickly and keeps the voltage up. Then when the amp draw is less it charges up.

     

    I broke the brackets years ago and use 2 sided foam tape to keep it wedged between the tire, the fiberglass floor that goes on top and the metal on the car. That cap is not going anywhere ;)

    I installed one in my car (1500/3000 max) with a dura last battery. The one for car audio( has more cranking amps ). During sandy I lost power for 7 days. I ran an electrical cord to the fridge and another to a power strip that spidered out on smaller electrical cords that powered lamps, a 60" tv Verizon Vios box, wifi box and a power strip out the window so my neighbors can charge there devices through the day.

     

    It was for me better than having a generator (I live in apartments also) because my car was off and about every 2 hours or so I would here the low Voltage alarm. Go start the car for 10 minutes and so on. That week I used maybe 1/4 of an 11 gallon gas tank. I have another van and would see people in line with gas cans every day for the generators and I filled my car once before the storm.

     

    If you decide to install a converter make sure you use good thick wire. I'm using 4 gauge from parts express ( really good not to expensive) don't forget to fuse by the battery and make the grounds as short as possible . If you wanna go deep cycle for the battery the better, but will cost more.

    glock sights are not easy to move. i have put night sights on a glock 22 and 19. get a set of brass punches(its a soft metal) and a hammer. it took some hard hitting to move them.

    Not too much when I was there. I'd say ~20 handguns in 2 glass cases. All varied calibers and companies. I think it's pretty much a good place to do transfers and buy some ammo. As others have said though, it seemed like they were still not fully stocked/set up. Maybe eventually they will have more but it is a very small shop... Joe and his wife seemed to be very good people. I'd go back again. Especially since I'm only a few mins from there!

     

    I decided to take a ride and see the new store ( saw him on water st. ) as you said it is a small place but he was busy. Lots of people in and out. I give him time to see the store grow. He did have a good amount of ammo. I'm gonna keep an eye on them. It's good to have

    Another gun shop in the area.

    And yet again, someone posts to try to help fellow members and some feel it necessary to make negative comments. This is why I don't post deals. You guys are really awesome in the best way possible.

    Nothing really negative. I thought people buying should at least know its not new ammo but reloaded and also gave my opinion on how good the ammo is.

    We just got to watch the trolls posting nothing that has to do with this thread. Hint Hint.

    I was at the brick dicks and bought some shells. when at the register I was asked if citizen. I pressed no and my purchase went through fine. I told the young lady what I did and she laugh then I was on my way out the door.

     

    I want to brick dicks again last Friday and picked up a sling for the 12 gauge and again it asked the question. I again pressed no to see what would happen this time and the purchase went through no problem.

     

    I have been there before and have been asked this question and have answered yes in the pass. I don't think it makes a difference.
