  1. Thanks for all the replies. Let me refine a bit: - This is a sentimental labor. I'm unconcerned about commercial viability of the end product. Although I'll be replacing the stock and barrel, it will still be 'his' rifle. He and I are both Rifle Experts, so I deifintely want to keep his weapon warm, and I've done a fair amount of drill with the '03 and I really like the feel and heft of the full battle rifle '03. - I expect the project to cost about $800, after everything is said and done. I hope it comes out lower, of course. $500 to $600 is my target. - I'll edit in the serial number later, but when disassembling it to give it a look myself, I found it seems to be an odd franken-rifle. If the references I was reading were correct it seems to have A1, A2 and A3 parts. Since my grandfather competed and was a Distinguished Marksman 2 years in the mid 40s, he may have dropped in many different pieces. EDIT:... I can't find a serial number on it. The spot just forward of the breech and behind the rear sight where the stampings usually are is entirely blank. Is there anywhere else a serial number is stamped? All I get from google are questions about price related to serial number, not where they are stamped. @Titanium Junkie: Your comments on the parts summarize what I found. I was surprised how many sotcks and barrels I could find with just a bit of searching. It sems the hardest part to come by is the firing mechanism and bolt assembly, which I have.
  2. My grandfather passed recently and left me his service rifle. In his day, he was a pretty good shot. After the war he took it to be sporterized, and unfortunately didn't explain himself too well. The gunsmith chopped it up pretty badly, shortening the stock and barrel quite a bit. I'm looking for someone who knows 1903s for a few reasons: 1. To tell me if the weapon is safe to fire. 2. To help me source a full-size stock 3. To help me source and install a full-length barrel. The goal is to return the rifle to its former fully-functioning state and shape. I'm in central NJ and any leads are welcome. Many places come up as 'gunsmiths' from stores that sell airsoft guns to sporting good stores - none of which are anything near what I need. Hopefully one you can help me cut through the noise.
