  1. Uhh... thanks? Anyway, James, as that wasn't really part of the question, all I can say is I am more than completely satisfied with having an 870 and would not buy nor own an 887... if gifted I would sell or trade.

But I am extremely exponentially extraordinarily happy with the results of this 870 project and am proud as puppypapa as well.

I'm hearing the same sorts of things :-) Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  2.

There's a difference between having an item and having an item in your go bag. I think that you should pretty much own every item I've ever read about being in a bug out bag. I don't think you need all these things in a portable grab and go bag so you can get back home or if you are under a mandatory evacuation order. Water for example...there's water in NJ everywhere. Some purification tablets are small and usable as a last resort, but carrying little bags of the stuff? There's no point in it, we're never going to run out of water.

While I would usually agree with you, having dedicated tools and items in your go-bag allows you to leave at a moments notice without having to fetch items that may be around the house.

The other benefit is that you can keep in your car so you don't have to go home if you make the choice to bug out.

  3. Another great review, TW - thanks as always. I'm looking forward to starting the path of GFH training with the UP1 and UC1 in Dec. Like you, I've started shooting IDPA/USPSA but have taken a recent absence for knee surgery.

You made note a couple times to having a student nearby or clearing the shoot house with them. Can you elaborate a little bit more on this? And what is the "catch up" drill you mentioned?

    Cheers,

    James

  4. Did I post this already? It's military for sure. Very high and very fast. Could it be a missile test? Nothing I have ever noticed over NJ before.

It looks like it could be a refueling formation. Typically there is a larger tanker in the middle and the refueling planes fan out and take turns sucking from the teet.

Could be planes coming home from overseas or maybe a training mission?

  5. Depends on what kind of base (if any) your RMR has...

If your RMR has a base, then you just need a 45 offset rail... they're $30 or so at Midway to give you a ballpark. (Trijicon has one too... the RM55... it's $99. LoL.)

If your RMR has no other mount than your ACOG.. you don't necessarily need to buy a base for it AND a 45 offset.... you can buy something like the Burkett (http://www.predatortactical.com/Burkett-OffSet-Mount-GEN-2-p37.html)

Thanks for the lead. This is more to my liking - less parts and QD without paying out the butt. I like that it has wings to protect the optic too.

  6. ... you said you also have an RMR mounted... that could work in your favor too. Some people don't like the RMR up high (you go from a cheek weld to a chin weld.) Some put it offset with a 45 degree adapter. Some do away with it all together.

Or... you can just run the RMR on it's own.

That's an awesome idea. I've had some pain with having to break the cheek weld to use the RMR, rolling to an offset sounds like an awesome alternative.

  7. Hey guys and gals,

I'm signed up for the Urban Carbine and Urban Pistol classes (level 1) for December in Cedar Grove. I'm looking for anyone else that is planning on attending, and for people with advice about the course - what to expect, suggested gear, etc.

Really looking forward to some formal training from the guys at GFH!

    Cheers,

    James

  8. Hey all,

I'm finally getting into using my M&P 15T for something more than being a safe queen and distance shooting. I currently have an ACOG (4x32 Dual Illuminated ballistic reticle + RMR Sight) plus magpul backup sights and need some advice. I have done mostly distance shooting with the platform and haven't spent much time with competition usage. I'd like to try some rifle competition (3 gun, 2 gun, or side stages) and get more "tactical" experience.

I've registered for a GFH Urban Carbine 1 course and I'm looking for advice around using the ACOG in such short ranges. Will the optic serve the purpose or should I go with the iron sights for the class? I see lots of people opting for the Aimpoint T-1's these days so I'm concerned that I have the right tool for the job.

Any advice and tips would be greatly appreciated.

  9. Welcome to the forum - you'll likely need to put out a post into one of the other forum topics in order to get a real response about the club. You might get better responses if you ask some specific questions about the club etc.

    Cheers, and welcome aboard.

  10. Don't fall in love with steel.

James, come shoot USPSA Central Jersey next Sunday, it is what a more traditional USPSA match is. =)

Shongum is a terrific match, however some stage designs are more limited based on the space avail and all. CJ and OB are more like 6 or 7 stages like Stage 4 and 5 at shongum.

I'm out of shooting until my knee get's looked at. MRI scheduled for Tuesday - yesterday didn't help things, it's all locked up today... oops.

  11. Many clubs do the classifier in the beginning of the year. Some clubs will run an extra classifier of there is enough interest. I wouldnt mind running through it again to get classified in ESR.

    Are you in south jersey?

I'm not but I'm willing to drive - Up in Bayonne

You JUST missed one this past weekend at Easton on 8/25 (see my topic in this forum).

I saw that but I was going to my dad's for the Travers' Stakes @ Saratoga so I couldn't make it.
