Well, I PURCHASED my first gun today. I was a little miffed that I have to wait another 2 weeks to bring it home though. I thought I was going with a revolver, but the Ruger MKIII just felt right in my hands and my accuracy is way better than anything else I tried. Thanks to everyone for you help, hints, information, and support along the way!

I got a permit in June '12 but never used it. I didnt know they expired quickly. I took basic handgun class in October and was told by the guy at the range that they were only good for 3 months. "Oh hell" I thought....I'll just reapply once I decide what I want to purchase. So, I go to TRPD today and I'm told to apply for a new one...as I expected. But they handed me the mental health form, the criminal background form, and the info on where to get fingerprinted....again. To top it off, TRPD tells me that they are actually good for 6 months! I could have made a purchase in November or December....Dammit! So, I'm looking at the form and I have no freakin' clue what my SBI or FBI numberrs are. Anyone know? Thanks!

I guess my question is...what type of ammo is most readily available? Seems like every report I read shows that suppliers are running out. It would really suck if I got my first gun only to find out the ammo supply has dried up. And...Is "wad cutter" ammo ok for self defense?

Hi everyone. I finally got my ID card and permit EXACTLY 90 days after I was finger-printed. I emailed the governors office and I actually got a phone call from someone at the NJSP (a week after my documents arrived). Thanks to everyone for your help and info! Don't know what type of gun I'm going to get, but I think I want to start out with revolver. I took an NRA class about 15 years ago, but that was in PA (Pistol People in Bensalem). The woman runing the class said I did quite well and asked if I would consider competing. Well, I got sidetracked with family issues and never pursued purchasing a gun. I moved back to TR, and well...you all know the current political situation. I figured get a gun while you can.... I'm going to take a refresher class, ask alot of questions, and try out different types of handguns to see what feels right. I know I want a gun that uses ammo that wont be hard to find, or very pricey. Im looking for a medium lenghth barrel that would be good for home defense and possibly competition. (If I still have "it").

Hello from Toms River: I applied for my permit and was finger-printed on March 25th. Three months later, still no permit. I stopped by the TRPD in May and they said my app was "upstairs" being investigated. I even contacted State Sen. Holzapfel, along with Assemblymen McGuckin, & Wolfe. Someone from Holzapfel's office called staing they followed up with TRPD in May, and were told (quite rudly) that "its common for the process to takes this long". I have NO criminal history or mental problems, and I was even approved for a nursing license in 2011...that only took 2 weeks! I'm wrote the governor today and I'm really fed up. At what point do I get a lawyer? Thanks in advance, ~A novice in TR
