  1. For question #1 you just have to fill out a certificate of eligibility for each long gun you have transferred to you from him.  Fill out two copies,, one for you and one for your dad and keep them wherever you keep your important documents.  I can't help you with question #2

Here's the link for the certificate of eligibility

With all the potential chaos coming from Trenton, I want to make sure I'm legal in all regards.

My father and I are both FID holders. My dad owns roughly 30 shotguns and rifles (no handguns) he's collected over the years. He's offered me a couple for my collection and I want to verify 2 things.

    1. Can I simply take possession of whatever he gives me, or do I need to go through a dealer? I do not intend to register them, but I want to make sure he can legally "gift" them to me.

    2. My dad is in the process of drafting a will, and it appears I will be the one executing it. I'm the only child who has an FID. is there any rules or regulations concerning taking ownership of them when he passes?

Thanks for the help. This forum has been really beneficial for me!

  2. Wow, great price on the transfer.  I'll be putting in for my permits at the police station next tuesday, so hopefully I'll be ready to get a frame in the next month and a half or so. Gives me plenty of time to keep on reading and researching. Thanks again for all the help and advice everyone

  3. If you need a transfer, give me a call.  551-221-2276

Transfer fees and address? I'm in Jersey City a couple of time a month so Bayonne would be pretty convenient.

Also, do you provide any gunsmithing services to fix all my mistakes after this project reduces me to a weeping pathetic pile of defeat? haha

  4. If you aren't willing to tackle the trigger job because of the tools needed, then building a 1911 is not going to be for you.  The trigger job is the easiest part.  You will need specialized tools and fixtures to properly fit a barrel.  You can go with a Kart ez fit barrel, It can be good, but never great

Series 70 will be easier to build, there is no benefit to a series 80

I would recommend fosters for a frame, they are caspian blemishes that are barely noticable.  I would stay away from anything by Fusion or remsport especially if they are doing any fitting

Cosmetic blemishes won't be an issue as I plan on cerakoting, so I'll keep my eye on the foster website.  They are currently out of the slide and frame I want. And yes 70 series does seem to be the way to go after some research.  So much to learn, research to do, videos to watch, plenty to do before I even start thinking about thinking about buying anything

  5. I can't imagine tackling such a project without Jerry Kuhnhausen's Shop Manual.   It's an incredible reference.

Found a free PDF copy online, thanks for pointing this book out.

I think I'll be going with a drop in trigger kit (Trying to be honest and realistic about my mechanical abilities and experience and I also understand that "drop in kits" don't necessarily apply to 1911s in the same sense that they do to other types of guns).  I think that will allow me to avoid having to buy any specialized tools, as my grandpas shop has punch sets, calipers, metal files, vices, drill press, etc.

I'm thinking of going with a series 80 build.  I guess this is more piecing together major parts/components than a from scratch build.

Been looking at the Caspian frames/slides and they seem to have good reviews.  Any other brands you guys would recommend?

  6. Thanks for the head start guys. My grandpa was a machinist for a living and usually lets me have free run of his workshop when I have a project.  Seems like the first step will be to research tools and books/guides and scouring the 1911 forums.  Between all my friends guns and my mosin I have plenty of toys to play with.  This is more about taking on a long term project rather than wanting a well working gun immediately.  Thanks again for info i really appreciate it.

  7. So I'm putting in for my first pistol permits today and am thinking about piecing together a  nice 1911.  Being a broke grad student I rarely have large chunks of cash to drop at any one time so I figure that buying parts here and there over an extended period of time makes more sense.  I understand that it will cost more in the long run, but I will be getting exactly what I want plus a little hands on pistol education to boot.  My question is, are there any websites you guys would recommend for leading you through all the steps of building your own 1911?  What part companies put out the best products?

Any and all experience, hints, tips, etc. that you guys can pass along would be great.  I'm sure I'll have plenty of time to get a better feel of what I want before my permits actually get approved.

  8. The $18 fee is actually for your mental health check.

Everyone is require to have it done.

The nutley info says the $18 fee is for, "a Request for Criminal History Record Information for a Non-Criminal Purpose."

I'm only asking because you can't pay with cash or a check, you need to use a money order.  Didn't want to waste $18 if i didn't have to, but wanted to make sure I have all my ducks in a row when I hand in my paperwork.

Thanks for the info guys, looks like I'm headed off to Western Union!

  9. I'm applying for my first pistol permits tomorrow. I have my FID for a couple of years and according to the info my town has available it says I will need to pay an $18 fee for a background check on top of the $2 per permit if I haven't had a background in the past 6 months.  Is this part of the NJSP procedure or is this a town thing?  If anyone has any experience with P2P in Nutley, I'd love to hear it. Here's the link for the nutley info from the town website

  10. Ok, and that is because ATF nics national did not get all the info.

When you typically go to buy a gun, or in any other state, the dealer calls in or faxes in.  If calls, they will get on the other call, either a Proceed or Deny... They may also get a Pending... while they research it more.  That is the instant part.

If they come back as "pending",  they have to get back in 3 days, if they don't, the FFL at their discretion may sell you the gun.

When an FFL in NJ sends up a nics.... it is processed by NJ.... they are not even yet getting a Proceed, Deny or Pending.... in fact, it is not pending for more research, it is not even processed... it gets put in the back of the pile, and NJSP will not even know you sent up a nics until they get to it, 2 weeks later, or whenever they get to it.

yes, we may debate at what point the nics is considered sent over... or when it is processed, however it is the FFL who is going to be prosecuted, not the consumer who is buying the gun.  We may agree with it or not, but... that is the info from AG and State Police.

Thank you for explaining this in this way.  Makes perfect sense now.

  11. I never understood the whole bumper sticker/window decal thing.  I really don't give a rats ass about telling the person driving behind me about my beliefs/views/hobbies and I know I don't care about what the person in front of me likes to do on their weekends or how many kids/cats they have.  I think having a darwin fish on your trunk lid is just as dumb as having a jesus fish and an obama magnet is just as lame as an NRA sticker.  No one cares. Go on with your life without feeling the need to constantly have to prove stuff to other people.

  12. sorry cant help you on the pitted mosin issue as mine was in great shape when i got it, but is using wd-40 a common cleaning method? would you guys recommend it? I want to try different cleaning methods but I also dont want to mix a whole bunch of solvents that will blow my room up when combined, haha

  13. i've been using the windex method to remove the corrosive salts before actually going to town with No. 9 and a cleaning rod. I dont mind cleaning as long as i know im doing it right and giving myself the best chance to avoid rust issues. Plus its a good excuse to sit at my workbench and enjoy a glass or two of single malt in peace and quiet =)
