  1. Another good flavor addition is to make slits in the meat about 1" deep (poke a knife blade straight in about 1") and put in a clove of pickled garlic and 1 banana pepper ring. Put them about 2"-3" apart all over one side of the meat (I use pork butt). If you have trouble finding pickled garlic, let me know...my mom pickles and cans it in 1/2 pint jars and I have about 3/4 case that I'll share.

  2. Just took a look at their site...if you're LEO/Military or a Veteran, they offer a 5% discount.  First place I've seen that offers a discount to vets that didn't serve the entire 20 and then retire...they'll definitely be getting my business for as long as I can still have ammo shipped to NJ from out of state.

  3. I was LE in SC for a few years and I never asked where anyone was coming from unless I suspected DUI...I would usually look for a reason NOT to write a ticket. The gun laws at the time allowed for carry of a loaded handgun in the glove box and you had to declare if you had to expose the weapon while accessing your docs. I never asked if anyone was carrying...but anyone who carried legally was usually cooperative enough to comply without being asked when necessary.

Traveling from SC to NC once (pre-LE), I got stopped for 75 in a 55 just as I crossed the state line. I didn't have a chance yet to make my gun NC legal which, at the time, was weapon in plain sight with ammo locked separately. I gave the trooper my license and let him know that the reg & ins were in the glove box with a loaded 9mm...I told him I would keep my hands on the wheel while he went to the other side, I opened the glove box, had him remove my Glock 17 and I got out my papers. He removed the mag and emptied the chamber, put mag & loose round in my glove box and spent the next 10 minutes checking out my gun because they were considering making a switch to them. I offered to meet him at a range so he could test fire and he agreed...put the gun on my dash and sent me on my way with the range address and date & time to meet.

  4. Didn't build my own but I have an AWESOME western Carolina sauce recipe (mustard based instead of ketchup and it DOES carry a kick).

I use a Brinkmann vertical for direct smoke and for indirect, I took an old gas grille, gutted it and used sheet metal to divide it in two...wood/coals on the right, meat on the left. And, thanks to SS Sandy, I have plenty of maple to smoke with.

I'm even willing to share my BBQ recipe....

    Western Carolina BBQ Sauce

    Ingredients:

    1 cup prepared yellow mustard

    1/2 cup sugar

    1/4 cup light brown sugar

    3/4 cup cider vinegar

    1/4 cup water

    2 tablespoons chili powder

    1 teaspoon black pepper

    1 teaspoon white pepper

    1/4 teaspoon cayenne

    1/2 teaspoon soy sauce

    2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon liquid smoke (hickory flavoring)

    Preparation:

Mix all except soy, butter and smoke. Simmer 30 minutes. Stir in remaining ingredients and simmer for 10 more minutes.

I also inject the meat with a 3:1 mixture of apple juice and bourbon.

  5. My parents took the auto-train for the first time this year and loved it. They live in MD (3hrs from Lorton) and winter in Kissimee...got coach tickets but wish they had gotten a sleeper. Other than that, the cost was about the same, time about the same but they weren't tired when they got there and their truck had 1000 or so fewer miles than it would have.

  6. Just found this forum.  Just getting back into shooting after a long break.  Spent 7 years in the USN 1985-1992...2 years in LE in S. Carolina...currently working as a Safety Consultant.

Getting back into shooting because my wife of almost 19 years mentioned a few months ago that she thought it would be good to learn to shoot (yay...win for me).  So for Christmas, I bought her a gift card to Heritage Guild in Easton and had her take the Handgun 101 for Women.  She really enjoyed it and wants to keep going (another win for me!!!)   Don't currently own any guns but submitting my FPIC application to Washington Twp PD after I get printed on Tues...hope they don't drag their feet.

She wants to keep going with .22LR until she's comfortable with shooting, then we'll move her up to a 9mm.  Don't plan on purchasing anything for a few years because we have a child with Asperger's and don't want to risk him accessing it...he could break a steel block if you give him the chance, let alone a safe...and he's very curious.

So, we'll keep renting at HG for a while.  Not the most cost efficient method but it will have to do.
