    As for the choice of handgun check out the Smith & Wesson M&P9 M2.0 Compact.

    Its Glock 19 size but more comfortable in the hand, interchangeable backstraps and better sights for less money that the G19.

    The Ruger and especially Taurus are second tier weapons in my opinion.

    Not unheard of for departments to 'stale date' them. (Typed date, then Chief sits on them before signing, then notification to pick up comes some time later)

    Thats one of the reasons to purchase the item first, then have your FFL hold it while handgun permit is processed.

    Thats how I'm doing it next time.

    He was only found guilty of DWI but the Chief used the charges of aggravated assault and an accusation of domestic abuse as reasons to deny the FID application.

    There should be disclaimer at the top of the FID application warning people if there is  anything on your record;  Charges, dismissals, false accusations, mistaken identity, spitting on the sidewalk, etc. it can and will be used to deny the FID, and then you'll have the denial added on as well.

    Collapsible stocks are allowed in N.J. if pinned into a fixed position (of your choice) as mentioned. A fixed stock could be swapped in as well.

    Keep in mind however some rifles are not legal N.J. even with compliance modifications such as a Colt AR-15.

    The AR-15 roll mark alone disqualifies it according to the way the AWB is written, even though an identical rifle under a different model name such as A-15 or X-15 could be made N.J. compliant. There are others on the list as well. Call Steve before you order anything.

    Another hassle, some sellers will not ship certain rifles to N.J. FFL's even though legal.

    So read the fine print for sellers that will ship to N.J.

    Best prices on transfers and no need to conduct your business at some crowded gun store counter with all the riff raff milling about.

    Sounds like your PD is working on it, not stalling and the reduced hours explanation is believable.

    Nonetheless, I would call again if you don't hear back from them.

    Personally, next time I'm going to purchase the item I want then have it shipped to my FFL to hold, while the PP is processed.

    Last year I was in the market for an S&W EZ. I bought something because my PP was about to expire. A few months later S&W comes out with rebates for the same Item and they were selling at bargain basement prices. 

    BTW-  You won't be able to pickup two handguns, thanks to Gov Corzine it's one a month in N.J.

    That would be stupid.

    Whats the point of owning a handgun in N.J. if it can't be used in a justifiable self defense situation without exposing yourself to serious weapons charges probably landing you in jail, your wife will divorce you and you'll lose the right to ever legally own firearms in any state.

     30 days is about average for purchase permits some wait much longer, some less. 

    That being said, do gun laws in N.J. stink, yes but thats the way it is and not likely to change anytime soon, we are vastly outnumbered

     Taking it before a Superior court judge would be the last resort, and in Passaic Cty. I'd rather not go that route if I didn't have to. The idea is to get your record clean so you can re-apply and the Chief won't have a reason to deny the application.

    Since you weren't convicted of any crimes you should be able to get an expungement.  

    The DWI can't be expunged but it was 13 years ago so that is in your favor as well. However, don't get another DWI, two on your record and you can just about forget ever owning a firearm in N.J.

    Also, I don't like the psych exam suggestion, cross that lawyer off the list and call Needelman & Pisano. Taking a firearms safety training course isn't going to help either.

    You have to get your record clean. If there is anything, no matter how minor, unfair or long ago that can be used to deny an FID it will be. 

    And don't shop around trying to cheap out on the attorney, this isn't the place to save a few bucks.

    I highly recommend Needleman & Pisano

    I went through the same hassles when I first applied and was denied for some penny ante stuff that happened 14 years prior when I had just turned 18.

    Mr Pisano handled the whole process which involved appealing the decision and expunging my record.  Once that was done he sent a letter on my behalf along with the re-application to the local Chief of Police and It was then approved.

    I don't  know what the going rates are now but I think the whole thing was under $2000 at the time and well worth it.

    You need to get those black marks off your record regardless of the FID, it can negatively affect you in job interviews and other important matters.
