  1. I wouldn't say the guy who NDed was allowed to stay in the class as it happened when he was putting his gear away at the end of the day.  Pat also stopped those who were still running drills when it happened and gave an additional safety lecture.

The guy who got cut by lead splatter off of steel is a friend of mine, and it was a small cut that bled pretty good, and was immediately addressed by a nurse and doctor (the doctor also being a friend of the cut guy) who were attending the class.

  2. Anyone ever try removing the lever? Be an easy way without drilling into anything. Then the stock wouldn't be "collapsible"

I think you are looking for MORE trouble.

I also think that anyone who is not a complete pussy can pinch the crosspin with their fingers and pull it down to adjust the stock in the same manner one would to remove the stock.

If you get busted/charged I would hope that you would not try to defend yourself saying you are to fat to manipulate the crosspin as it is much easier than a feild sobriety test.

This Magpul stock knowledge was obtained in the state of MD, where you can have a colapsable stock for now (but not for long  ) The too fat to do a field sobriety test comments are based upon the public record which was pointed out to me by a friend in the legal community.

  3. I was talking with some ATF guys today and we were talking about some NFA class III stuff. They said at the current rate that they are finding stuff when WWII vets die, they are about 90% positive that they are going to do an amnesty just like 1968 this year. Many honest citizens are becoming felons when they find that grandpa brought home a machine gun that they never knew about. Now here comes the big question. If federally they were to have amnesty, would NJ follow the amnesty? I know federal law trumps state but how does a situation like this play out?

First of all, I have to say that I don't believe anyone in the BATFE would say something so absurd as that the BATFE is going to have an amnesty.

Secondly, I have to question your judgment for thinking that those who brought us Fast and Furious would ever promote an amnesty for law abiding American citizens.

As to your question of law, enough others have made it sufficiently clear how absurd it was.

Thank you for reminding me why I rarely come here anymore.

Edited to add: I just noticed that this thread is a few months old. Usnmars, do you have any updates from your BATFE buddies?

  4. Certain logical, but does it perhaps venture into excessive optimism to count on having room to move laterally? All you've got is backwards in a straight line in a significant portion of indoor attacks.

The problem with moving backwards is that your adversary can move faster forward than you can backward, and while moving backwards your weight ends up on your heels. This makes it relatively easy for your adversary to take you to the ground.

Force on Force evolutions have taught me that I don't want to be getting stabbed while standing, but I REALLY dont want to be getting stabbed while grounded with my opponent on top of me!

  5. I really enjoyed the summit as well, and I think Nick gave a pretty good overview.

The thing that impressed me the most is the camaraderie. Every instructor who was not teaching was either auditing, or helping with, another instructor’s class. This really helped as each instructor knew what had already been covered, and didn’t need to waste time covering it again. This allowed Kelly Venden, whose class was at the end of Saturday, to get an amazing amount covered in a two hour class. I would have never thought that we would be moving to cover, then shooting bilaterally around it in a two hour class!

The close interaction between the instructors and students did not end on the range, but carried on throughout the weekend at the hotel, meals, etc.

The range was also great for this type of event as they had a large clubhouse for the few classroom portions/lunch, and several pits so multiple live fire classes could be conducted safely at the same time.

The goodie bag was also a very pleasant surprise, and I think I did a little better than Nick, as mine had over $100 worth of stuff, including a couple of Gen III Fastmags, and my shirt was even in my size!

  6. While I agree that the Teuller drill is EXTREMELY educational, I find it almost useless from a citizen's point of view. Do you really think that you will be mugged/assaulted from 21 feet away?

Do you really feel that any competent criminal will be accosting you from beyond contact range? How can you give him your wallet/car keys/etc. if you are that far away?

I can hear all of the Tactical Teds saying that they won't allow anyone to approach within 21 feet. I challenge anyone to go through one day without letting any unknown contacts approach within 21 feet of them.

The real question is have you trained managing unknown contacts at 0-5 FEET, or any in fight weapon access skills for when you have lost initiative? You may have an world class drawstroke in competition, but can you do that when the bad guy is in your face, fouling your drawstroke with one hand, and shanking you with the other?

  7. that is just ugly. OD looked pretty good. This...

I don't get it, what is the fascination with FDE?

There comes a point, when you have entirely too many Glocks, that something different is kind of interesting :icon_e_wink:

On a somewhat more practical point for those who actually carry, if one were to inadvertantly expose a FDE gun it may be slightly less noticeable than a black gun (as they don't make a pasety white version to better match my skin tone :keeporder: ).

  8. Am I the only who would care less if they took possesion of my firearm, after an incident where I had to discharge it in my home to protet myself or my family? Assuming it was a righteous shoot, my family was unharmed, and I was still breathing - take it as part of your investigation (just give me a receipt). Similar to how any possesion in my home is not worth dieing for and completely replaceable, so are my firearms, I do not have an emotional attachement to them - they are all tools, they are all S/N 100k of 100,000k's, and all replaceable.

    I could not agree more!

I am going to use the best tool for the job. If it gets seized afterwards, I have more tools.

While I agree that NJ is F-ed up, and will take your gun in even an obviously justified shooting, I do not see that as a reason to use a less effective tool to protect my life. This may even be a valid argument for all of those who advocate having two of the same firearm?

  9. I guess it all depends on your goals.

Are you a hunter? Do you want to compete? Do you want to be able to defend yourself? Do you want to prove you are cool because you post pictures of yourself online holding a gun?

I would say that in all but the last silly category, if you want to be a better (hunter, competitor, fighter) than you are now, you could use some additional training. One of the greatest indicators of greatness in any field I have ever seen is the ongoing drive to improve oneself. If you are happy being a big fish in a small pond, I would agree that you should avoid any additional training, as you might not feel so big anymore.

Ray, it is a shame you couldn't make the force on force class Anthony offered you, as I think it may have given you a new perspective. Please don't take this the wrong way, but have you ever heard the line "you don't know what you don't know"? When taking some good force on force classes I was surprised how it changed my whole outlook on self-defense with a firearm. Even though Anthony (and many others here) are mad at me, I think you should take him up on his generous offer, as you may come out of it with a new perspective.

From my experience, most people come out of live fire classes thinking they are ready to defend themselves (and lots of people who have never trained feel the same), people who take a good force on force class realize that you can never be fully prepared, but you can be better than you are now.

Are you better prepared than 90% of the population? Hell yes! Can you be better? I would be willing to bet that the answer is also yes.

I will always strive to be better than I am today, and I would invite you to do the same.

  10. I typed up a long reply, but it got lost when I hit submit, so let me try this again:

I have taken a LOT of training classes with around 12 different instructors (not counting NRA classes), so as you can tell I am a bit of a training junky.

What interests me the most in this thread is how many of us train with friends. When I first started training, quite a few years ago, I went by myself, and must admit that I was a little apprehensive and intimidated. Fortunately I had a great instructor, and a great group of guys to train with, many of whom I am friends with today.

Now when I go to training classes I generally go with some friends (and I voted that way in the poll), but even if I don't go with friends I know some of them will be there in the class, as the majority of the friends I have on this forum I have met at training classes. I have also met a few from competition, and through Paul/PK90 . I have trained with the most of the posters in this thread, have been at most of the classes listed, and look forward to a bunch of great classes in the next few months.

I'd like to learn basic first aid, especially since the sport we are in it would be nice to know what to do If (God forbid) someone gets shot or cut.

Good post Ray, as first aid may one of the most important skills. Several trainers that I have trained with did segments on in extremis medical care during lunch, and those may have been the most useful portions of the class. Consequently I carry a blow out kit in may range bag, in my car, and in my backpack when I hike.

Unfortunately, when they offer the same stuff as a standalone class no one seems to sign up. Maybe we can get Tosser, with his background, to arrange some good first aid/in extremis medical classes?

Does combat kamite count? I didn't see it listed.

I Googled combat kamite, and I am still not sure what you are talking about?

  11. Just keep in mind that renewal is optional, and up to the police department/chief.

2C:58-3 f. Granting of permit or identification card; fee; term; renewal; revocation. The application for the permit to purchase a handgun together with a fee of $2, or the application for the firearms purchaser identification card together with a fee of $5, shall be delivered or forwarded to the licensing authority who shall investigate the same and, unless good cause for the denial thereof appears, shall grant the permit or the identification card, or both, if application has been made therefor, within 30 days from the date of receipt of the application for residents of this State and within 45 days for nonresident applicants. A permit to purchase a handgun shall be valid for a period of 90 days from the date of issuance and may be renewed by the issuing authority for good cause for an additional 90 days. Etc...

  12. Goal 1: Become more physically fit. (Passing score on APFT) Back when I was Army Strong I would run miles and PT like a stud. Now I'm out of shape.

For my Age group that would be:

40 pushups in 2 min (Doable now)

50 sit ups in 2 min (Doable now)

2 mile run in 16:32 (not doable now)

Weight for my height would be 205#. I need to shed 20#

Goal 2: Learn to effectively use a revolver. (from concealment to include reloads)

Goal 3: Do some more combatives/MMA training. This is the MOST practical form of self defense, not everyone can be/needs to be shot.

Tosser, what are the APFT standards for a 6'3" 42 year old?

If you find somewhere close by I would love to start doing some MMA or Jiu-Jitsu too.

  13. where did you see that? how much was it? what did you like about it? not familiar with the company...

Windham is made up of several of the guys who worked at Bushmaster before they were bought out and moved.
