Bob, did you lose power yesterday?  We finally got ours back around 8:45 after it went out at 1-ish yesterday afternoon.

Yes, and Sunday too. About 12 hours each time. No problem as we have a whole-house generator, but the cable must have been affected also. Had TV & Internet for about the first 6 or 7 hours of the outage, but then they went down too. Came back when the power came back.

    Adios,

    Pizza Bob<----will be wearing a day-glo green S&W T-shirt on Friday

  2. It is the 6th National Gun Violence Awareness Day. As such, the wholly Bloomberg funded group "Mothers Demand Action" are urging everyone to wear orange tomorrow.

I don't think that there is a gun owner who isn't opposed to violence, but that is precisely it - the violence and the criminal are what should be targeted, not the gun. MDA doesn't seem to understand (or most likely they do) that more gun laws only oppress the law abiding. Criminals, by definition, do not obey the law. If gun laws curbed violence and crime, then NJ should be the safest state in the union.

So I suggest a small counter demonstration - no we aren't going to march or loot - just wear GREEN tomorrow. Preferably something green with a firearms manufacturers' logo on it or something else relating to guns and/or the legitimate use thereof.

Let's make Friday GUN AWARENESS DAY and tell MDA to direct their efforts toward something meaningful like MADD - there is a cause we can all get behind..

WEAR GREEN ON FRIDAY JUNE 5TH

Folks, it’s been 60 days since I applied for my permit and 30 days since I received back ground check clearance...Has anyone experienced this? What should be done for this?

The background check clearance is not the end of the process. You have to get this e-mail...

NJ.gov - The official web site for the State of New Jersey

After you receive the above e-mail your PD should call you within a week. I just happen to be fortunate enough to live in a township where the PD is really on the ball and they notify me as soon as they're notified of my approval - which usually precedes the NJSP notification to me.

Hang in there - nobody said this would be easy. LOL

Ive used Mark Hartshorne from Pinnacle High Performance for revolver work and he has done a great job. He is in Quakerstown, PA. I have two revolvers in his shop now waiting for his bench.

Mark has moved. He is now in Orefield, right on 309 above where the Tpke Ext crosses over. The new address is on the site, but not easy to find.

If you have resided in NJ, even at multiple addresses, for over 10 years the mental health check form is no longer needed. They have the information already. If less than 10 years they will require it.

Not that I doubt you, but where did this info come from? If from your local PD I would label it suspect. If from the NJSP, I'd like to see the cite for that. Thanks.

I keep hearing about some kind of mental health release paperwork that needs to be signed separately, perhaps at the station? Anyone know about that?

I'm not sure that is a requirement anymore. The idea behind FARS was to move the process completely on-line, with the exception of the actual distribution of the permits. I can't use my own experience as a yardstick because I've lived at my current address almost 20 years. The SP-066 asks for former addresses if you have lived at your current one less than ten years. That is because there is/was no central database that could be searched and a manual search had to be made in every county of residence. Not sure if that is still the case.

I will say that I was at my local PD picking up some permits when an applicant came in with a completed SP-066 to turn in and the detective that was dealing with me simply told him it was no longer necessary and apologized because they hadn't changed their website yet. He never prefaced his comment with, "How long at your current address?" just dismissed him out of hand.

    Don't do social media, thanks

What does that have to do with somebody like Zuckerberg having a database of civilian firearms? He's not collecting the numbers from Facebook but from the whole Internet. No chance for abuse there - what could possibly go wrong?

Not enough to convince me.  The serial number for your vehicle is in plain sight too.

If the thought of Zuckerberg having a database of civilian firearm serial numbers doesn't send chills up your spine, then you're a better man than I. Just the beginning of a slippery slope.

  9. I used to shoot IPSC with Austin's son Frank, who now runs a sports memorabilia store in Lahaska. Franks son's name is Colt.

And here's a little story about Austin. I can’t vouch for the truthfulness of this story, but it is one of my favorites.

Austin was set-up behind the line at Camp Perry one year, doing some gunsmithing. A distraught competitor ran up to his tent and explained that he was due on the line shortly and he had just noticed that his front sight was bent.

Austin took the gun from him, examined it and confirmed that the sight was, indeed, bent. “Can you fix it?” inquired the owner, hopefully. Austin told him to pick-up the gun, grip it as he normally would, extend it out to a firing position and turn his head. The owner complied, at which point Austin picked-up a brass mallet from the bench and whacked the front sight, nearly knocking the gun out of the owner’s hands.

The owner went ballistic, screaming, “What have you done?” to which Austin calmly replied, “Look down the sights,” which the owner did. “Is it straight?” inquired Austin. After looking at the sights the incredulous owner said, “Yes, yes they are”, to which Austin replied, “That’ll be $15.” The owner protests, “$15? That’s highway robbery. All you did was hit it with a hammer.” Austin looked at him and said, “It’s only $5 for hitting it with a hammer, but $10 for knowing how hard.”

  10. SP 015 and SP 016 (both Rev 07/2012). You will need to know the serial numbers of the guns and the FFL's federal and state license numbers. The FFL needs to sign the 016 and the applicant the 015. The MPE can be used anytime, regardless of when your last purchase was made under OGAM, however, the 30 day clock resets with the use of the MPE.

As has been pointed out - best to just go with OGAM at this time.

SP-015 and SP-016. The two most useful forms the state of New Jermany has ever produced.

There are also continuation pages if all your handguns won't fit on the first one!

I have used them several times - for that matter I was going to use them this time (I had three guns at my FFL). I was advised against it at this point because of the backlog of regular applications. The MPE's (Multiple Purchase Exemption) are processed manually and take additional time even in the best of times. I heeded my FFL's advice and will be doing it one gun at a time within the OGAM framework. I need a little breather anyway. LOL

Might as well go ahead and apply for some more permits, since these'll probably be expired by the time I can use them.

Don't forget that they can be extended to 180 days from date of issue at your CLEO's discretion.

  13. One of the easiest ways to enhance both the function and/or the aesthetics of your handgun is with custom grips. The beauty is that it is easily reversible or changeable if, down the road, your tastes change. I have been working through my S&W revolvers and either changing to the Smith smooth target offerings, or custom offerings.

Smooth S&W grips are usually goncalo alves, but rosewood and even maple have also been used. Here's an example of smooth grips (these are presentation grips - meaning they are relieved on the R/S to show a custom roll mark on the side plate...

    Slide11.jpg

They made them in configurations for the various frame sizes and grip frames. Here is a set of what are called "banana" grips (for obvious reasons). They are shown on a Model of 1953 22/32 Kit Gun...

    Kit-Gun.jpg

And then there are the all-out custom grips. I've installed elk stag grips on a number of my guns. Ken Driskill is the maker and he does terrific work at more than reasonable prices. However, you can't place an order with Ken. This is a hobby for him and he makes what he wants, when he wants, so it's a matter of being in the right place at the right time to get a set of his grips. He advertises them for sale on the S&W forum and also on Gun Broker (GB ID = bigmtnman). Here's a set of Ken's stag grips on my model 25-14...

    25-14-stag-B.jpg

As far as custom grips in wood, there are three makers who are the pre-eminent craftsmen of S&W grips. They are Craig Spegel, John Culina and Keith Brown.

Craig Spegel makes boot grips, however he also makes an extended version of his boot grip, which, in essence, are full size grips. Craig is 63 and currently has a two year waiting list for revolver grips. I was fortunate to purchase a gun that turned out to have Spegel grips on it - unbeknownst to the seller (a large gun store in the Pacific NW). These are ebony boot grips on a model 25-3. If they look familiar, Craig did the design of the Uncle Mike's rubber boot grips...

    625-3-Spegel.jpg

The Culinas, John and Jennifer, make grips in the style of the stock S&W grips, but better shaped, better quality and some beautiful woods. Here are two examples of John's work. The first is a Target grip and the second is a Combat grip (both on models 24-3). Both are made with "bubble" maple - a variety of birdseye in which the "eyes" look three-dimensional (very hard to capture that effect in a picture)...

    24-3-4.jpg

    24-3-3.jpg

And last, but certainly not least, is Keith Brown. Keith also has a two year backlog and is not accepting new orders at this time. He is a master at both the carving of the grips and the checkering. He may be best known for his Roper style grips with Roper's iconic ribbon checkering pattern. I just got these today (there are some available through brokers or private parties) - I will say that I have paid less for some Smiths in my collection than I paid for these grips, but I so love the Roper pattern that I just had to have the best. I passed bidding on a scarce Model 28 so that I could buy these grips...

    Model-16-4-KB-1.jpg

There are lots of commercial manufacturers also. Some of the best known are Hogue, Altamont, Eagle, Badger, Pachmayr, Nills, KSD and others. The truly custom makers are dwindling. Ahrends and Herretts are both out of business, hopefully others will pick-up the mantle.
