  1. As someone who moved out of NJ a year ago and never looked back, trust me you are making the right move. I am in Florida now and my taxes have gone up! I mean my tax stamps have gone up ;)

Good luck! the only thing I am missing is Italian bread.

  2. I was out shooting to 1000 on Saturday. I had a bolt .308 and a Larue OBR .308 with me. The bolt has a NF 5x25 and the Larue has the 3.5 x 15. With either you will be able to see the target (depending on size of course) but with my old eyes I need the extra magnification for target ID. You can always dial back from the higher, but not the reverse. Also if you are looking to shoot distance look into the 6.5 calibers, much better at wind and distance deflection. Just my 2 cents....

  3. First custom rifle build. Congrats!

I was there once. All I can say is that it probably wont be your last. You seem to like a variety of calibers in your life. I am the same way, lots of mouths to feed at the reloading table. I probably reload for 12-15 different calibers now. I lost count. Its a fun journey though.

If I had to do it all over again I would probably have only three custom builds. All identical stocks, and scopes. A 22LR trainer for 100 yards or less (an Anschutz or a CZ455 customized to shoot like an Anschutz), a 223 or 308 for general purpose training and practice (since they have very long barrel life) , and one match rifle for competition in either 260 rem or 6.5x47 lapua (less barrel life but better ballistics). Glass would be Schmidt & Bender PMII  5-25x mil/mil with the P4F or MSR reticle. Stock would be a Manners T4A or a Accuracy International AX post 2014 chassis system. Thats what I am most comfortable behind.

I have a J Allen stock and the grip angle while shooting prone is very comfortable. They are well made stocks I will say that. I just think they are heavy and clunky otherwise. If you are staying stationary off the bench or prone then it doesnt matter.

    Great Paul,

Why didn't you give me that advise when you got me hooked on long range shooting? I could have saved thousands....  :) Oh and as far as the 6.5x47 it is a great round, 66 inches less drop then my .308s at 1000 yds

  4. Rob don't discount a standard old school Remington trigger. I have 3 precision build they all use a tuned remmy, break right about 2.5 lbs. and no creep. All cost about $40. The only other trigger I liked was a Huber 2 stage, but decided to stick with a single stage. When you come back to Fl you are more then welcome to check them out.

  5. I have three Valor's so that will tell you which I would go with. I like the clean look over the others. I don't like front serrations of a rail on a 1911, but that is just my taste. My Valor's all shoot as good as my Ed Brown and for a lot less.... But then again all of them can out shoot me.

  6. I'm in Jacksonville and heard on the radio the other day that a hurricane hasn't hit JAX since the late 1800s.

Also, the Summers here are no worse than NJ, in fact, the humidity some days in central jersey was worse some days than here. We do get a change of seasons here. Gets into the 40s in Jan and Feb and even 30s some days or nights.

I've seen the occasional roach, but usually dead.

You don'[t have to mow the lawn every week in the winter.

I'll take this any day over NJ.

Yep best move I ever made was to move down here!

  7. I haven't picked a smith yet. I'm not looking for to far a distance in the near future but I'll probably be moving to the Carolinas in a few years. Once the kids are older I'll be taking long range hunting trips. I'm leaning towards the 6.5 because it's something different and I like the longer distance accuracy.

Wasn't sure if I should start ordering all the parts or if that's the smiths job. Do I just tell him what I want and let him have at it? Or is there's just certain parts I need a smith for cause hell, I figured a custom build should be something I put my time into.

    Thanks

    George

When you pick a smith, they might have some of the parts in stock already and that will save you time. It is not uncommon to have some smiths take 6-9 months to build a custom rifle. I have had actions and a stock that I sent to them and they supplied the rest. I also just prefer old Remington triggers that the smiths smooth out to about 2-2.5 lbs.

  8. Hello George,

Have you picked out a smith yet for the build? That is where I would start with looking at parts. I have a few builds, two on Surgeon actions and one on a trued Remmy. All run flawlessly. I have 2 in .308 and one in 6.5x47.

What is the planned distance? If just NJ and 300 yards a .308 will do all you ever need. If you are going to stretch it out to 1000 or so then I would go the 6.5 flavor, but again a good smith will be very helpful in his advise.

PM NJBullseye on here as he is a very knowledgeable person when it comes to precision shooting.

I would also look into taking some precision shooting classes before you develop bad habits :).

    Hope this helps,

  9. Well I am a big fan of Night Force, but that would likely double your budget. I have a NF 2.5x10 that is great. I also have the Vortex Viper PST in the same magnification, so for your budget I would go with the Vortex. You will be giving up just slightly in the clarity. The stadia lines on the Vortex are a little thinner then the NF so in darker areas they are a little tougher to pick up especially if using holdovers.

  10. I have the 5 version. It is a solid gun, very accurate and of course since it's a 1911 it has a really nice trigger. I had some issues with the blueing on it and had to send it back to them for refinishing. They said they had some issues with the tank getting contaminated. The fit is tight, but not as tight as my Dan Wessons or Ed Brown. I have a GI model Springer and the STI is worlds better then that, but don't know about the TRP.

  11. So if I walk into a place that supplies CCW's in FL with my NJ hunting license they'll help me do everything I need to apply for FL CCW?

Pretty much. I walked in with my DD-214. The forms are all on computer. The sit you down, you fill it out and they take your prints. Six weeks later I had my CFL.

Here's the links to all the information.

  12. What a scene. =)  Jimmy nice seeing you here.

Although I will be down in Florida... at least to visit you guys again very soon.

Great looking forward to seeing you. Will you have time for shooting? Sorry I missed you last time.

  13. Good to know, thanks Jimmy. BTW you and Keith are having too much fun down there!!!!!

Yes, yes we are. Amazing living in America. I got my 1st suppressor. Have another in NFA jail along with 2 SBRs. It's expensive living here, but worth it. Come down and visit when you get time.
