  1. 22yo here, and trying to balance the two. I have a '99 Corvette, a couple guns, take several vacations a year, go deer hunting with my pops every winter. At the same time I am paying a mortgage, try to max out my Roth IRA, and am going to start investing some money elsewhere within a month or two. My parents did nothing but save, and now that my mother has retired, with my father soon following, they own 3 houses outright. However, they have told me several times that they would have rather spent some of those savings and had more fun along the way.

  2. Most zombie books and movies (as well as most real) firefights take place at short distances. I would go with the smalller round in order to carry more especially in a bug out situation. I personally like the idea of a carbine/handgun combo of the same caliber and that use the same mags, less to worry about when the zombies come. If I can get a secure location that they can't access I'd go for the 308 and the long distance shots.

What would the effective range be of a carbine firing a pistol round though? Wouldn't you be limited to less than 100 yards?

  3. oooh, hunting 101.... Arent like over 90% of the shots within 75 yards? shooting anything over 200 being irresponsible?

    btw.... able to login?

Out of the three deer I've shot, only 1 was within 75 yards. For reference my first one was 60 yards, second one 85, and third 110. All three taken with slugs and my 870. These were all on public hunting ground in NJ.

  4. As I see it, the .223 gives you the ability to carry more ammo due to lower weight than the ,30 cal rounds, and .223 is still effective out to 250 yards. In a true SHTF situation, the extra range of .30-06 or .308 would be wasted in NJ in my opnion. I'd like to hear other thoughts on the matter though.

  5. X2... During our dept's last run of destroying firearms we had to melt down an absolutely gorgeous Caesar Guerini over/under :(

Was it used in a crime or something? Or just turned in at a Toys for Gun thingy?

Honestly I'm not sure. The gun came in before I started working there... one of the other gun nuts in the dept showed it to me briefly.

  6. I assisted in destroying a few thousand last year.

    :violin:

Dont get me started.... It Sucks to see some REALLY nice stuff have to go to the Smelter because we arent allowed to sell it, including stuff like Grands and 03's from the families of Deceased Servicement who "Just dont want them in the house" I ALWAYS tried to steer the folks who enquired about turing them in to local FFL's just so they wouldnt be destroyed.

Oh and before anyone starts in with the "The nice stuff goes to come cop's personal safe" crap, EVERY evidence/turn-in firearm comes with a ream of paper, that has to be verified between the County Prosecutor's and State police, then observers from ALL agencies involved have to verify each firearm as they go into the vat. They have even made the process to reatain stuff for departmental use so onerous that it's less hassle to just buy new.

  7. Only up to page 12 so far(I'll read the rest later tonight) but so far I am IN(I'm in... i understand this was a problem early in the thread  ). Plan on holing up for a couple weeks with the wifey and hope to get together with the 'rents(both avid marksmen) and eventually start the trek to my SH in the Pine Barrens. Currently it is capable of sleeping 8 couples on the ground floor and at least another 6 on the 2nd floor comfortably.

  8. Was that Ray in lane 3 tonight? We were right next to someone with an AR (we were in lane 4). I was getting my wife through her very first shots.

We got there late (around 7:30). Next time we won't be late!

Ports 2 and 3 were me and my buddies. I introduced myself to "Chris" I believe but my two friends took up most of my time. We had a Glock 21, 19, Springfield 1911, home-made AR-15, and the Remmy 870 between us.

Yea that was me. I started talking to Ray and Rick and didn't see you come in. Then I saw something shiny and got distracted. I apologize my manners normally aren't that poor. I have a touch of A.D.D. so once I started shooting I forgot to mention to Ray you were there.

No biggie... Like I said my two buddies provided enough company to keep me happy. Plus they bought me KFC for driving

  10. I recently moved and now my DL does not match my FID and I plan on making some gun purchases in the next few months. When I went to my local PD to change the address on my FID I was told that "changing the address" is not possible and that I had to apply for a whole new card, including getting fingerprinted again, mental health records search, and paying all fees associated with a first time applicant.

Is this the proper process or am I getting jerked around?

  11. If no one does, let me know, I can get you in touch with my buddy who does my Chevelle for me. Probably one of the best in the area, and is located in Robbinsville.

I'm assuming you're talking about Rich. If so yes, he is fantastic.

Indeed, Rich did an amazing job with the Chevelle at the beginning of last year. Its about time for his wax again now that I think about it.

Yea I want to have him hit the Vette this spring.

  12. Welcome from another newb. My girlfriend never held a firearm before meeting me, and the concept of guns in general made her nervous. I convinced her to come to a public WMA range with me just to watch, and went over all aspects of gun safety on the drive over. I also only brought a couple .22 rifles. After I went through a couple dozen rounds I asked her if she wanted to try and she agreed to shoot one mag. After her first "x" (shot #3 i believe) she was hooked, and now always wants to come with me when I go to the range(and she's gotten damn good too).

One thing that may have helped me quite a bit is that I had a good set of earmuffs for her, and the range was empty on that particular day. The .22 doesn't kick or make much noise at all, and once she was comfortable with those two factors, guns didn't seem too scary to her anymore.

  13. Just spent 1 1/2 hours trying to get home to Somerset from the wifey's 'rents house in Ewing. Could only find one way home as all other routes were flooded out. Hell, even Rt 1 was completely shut down.

    wow. yeah.

Rt 1 in monmouth junction/south brunswick always get flooded.

    how bad were the roads?

The roads we could get to were no problem for the wifemobile(08 Subaru Forester). But a lot of the roads that usually never have problems were blocked off. Landing Lane bridge and the local Rt 18 split(new brunswck) were both shut down due to flooding.

  14. My opinion is as long as you can send several rounds through each one every year and not neglect any particular firearm then no biggie. When you have firearms that aren't ever used, then you have too much IMO. With that being said I would NEVER support limiting firearm purchases to a particular number. If you have the coin to buy em, you deserve to own em.

As for me personally, I only legally own 1 gun, and the others in my sig are owned by my father, however I am the only person who shoots/takes care of them.
