  1. You are projecting your anger over NJ's gun law apathy on me. Pardon me, I don't know your name; Hi, I'm Steve, nice to meet you.

I will try to temper my incredulity just a bit.

I haven't heard a thing about this offer in the past. When is this annual political canvassing event? Is this a matter of changing some minds by knocking on doors and making a plea? Standing outside the AG's office with signs and handing out cups of coffee to passers-by? Writing the police chiefs of every town from here to Beaver county?

These would be answers to my question.

  2. Unfortunately, people from Jersey bring this crap with them. Most of us really are like swarms of locusts or cockroaches. They did it in a township near me several years ago. Has nothing to do with signs on telephone poles, or signs in streams, or trash, they just don't want signs on your property at all. Including farmers. Farms can only put up a sign for 90 days and it has to be pretty small, 3 x 4 I think. 1 foot by 1 foot signs are OK though.

As soon as we move in, we want to make everything just like the place we left. And we usually get away with it.

It's not just New Jersey and the impact is not only on the surrounding states. It seems to be a personality trait of northeasterners, especially New England, and it seems to be getting transplanted as far south as the coastal communities of North and South Carolina.

  3. Every person in India can carry a gun ANYWHERE. You can't carry a gun anywhere in Jersey. They have RKBA and you don't. If you are happier because you have a S&W you can't leave your house with, or an AR that you can't defend yourself with, and no way to defend yourself in public, then you sound like a gun collector to me.

I would rather live under India's firearms situation than under Jersey's any day of the week.

Have to agree with you on this...

  4. They have a history of taking payment for items not in stock, without notifying the buyer, leading to long wait times for orders.

Recently they seem to have better handling on their orders.

I would take that risk; just demand cancellation from them if they don't ship within a week. And if they refuse to cancel, issue a chargeback. If enough people do that, they will be forced to straighten up or have their merchant account revoked.

  5. On the topic of brown bags and ropes. In Reininger case, apparently the prosecutor successfully convinced the jury that nylon zip bags, gun socks did not qualify as “closed and fastened case” or “securely tied package” under the law.  FYI.

This is good to know, thank you. It seems this law is quite... er, malleable. Just hammer it hard enough and you can bend it to your will.

I should consider spray-painting "SECURELY TIED PACKAGE" on all of my gun cases to close that avenue.

  6. I have not done this to my Axis. I bought it used in what could pass for unfired condition, but I must assume the previous owner did not do it either.

It sounds like a lot of hokum to me, but a google search reveals that this is yet another hotly debated topic in gun circles, right next to heavyslow vs lightfast, semi vs revolver, mag vs clip, gunoil vs motoroil, rimmed vs rimless, belted vs unbelted, concealed vs open, and so on... So mileage may vary.

My opinion is just shoot it; if break-in is a thing, it will happen on it's own.

  7. I actually don't see much ambiguity in the text of the law.

    IANAL either, but this:

    2C:39-6. Exemptions

    g.     All weapons being transported under paragraph (2) of subsection b., subsection e., or paragraph (1) or (3) of subsection f. of this section shall be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or

...tells me that an unloaded handgun in a backpack is OK as long as the gun is secured in a case. That would seem to include walking in a parking lot from a gun shop, as well as walking down the street with an unloaded long gun in a case.

This doesn't mean you wouldn't get hassled. Just that you might be able to beat it in court if you have enough money and time to throw away on a court battle. That's where the ambiguity lies.

  8. A black powder hand gun in PA is like buying a wrench.  How big is your Snap-On tool chest?

This is true, a P2P is to purchase a handgun in the state of NJ and has nothing to do with PA. Federally, a black powder handgun is not subject to interstate commerce rules that handguns are (that is, out of state purchases must go through an FFL).

However, it is worth noting that once you do have the black powder handgun in NJ, the state considers it a handgun and therefore you are subject to the same transportation rules as anything other handgun (to/from range/gunsmith and domicile). Might be a good idea to go to a range in PA after purchasing it to ensure you are legal in NJ, if you didn't buy it from a gunsmith.

Smokin', I know that you know this; I'm just mentioning it to anyone who gets the idea to pick up a BP handgun in PA as an alternative to using a P2P in NJ.

  9. If you're looking for the most modularity, consider a Thompson Contender, and you can shoot just about anything with a barrel change in the same gun.

The most versatile you could get with a semi-auto, though, is probably a G20 in 10mm, for which there are 9mm, .357 sig, and .40 S&W barrels available. You will probably sacrifice reliability with any semiauto conversions, but that's 4 calibers in one handgun.

The only thing else that beats it is a revolver in .327 Federal Magnum, which technically also nets you .32 H&R magnum, .32 S&W long, .32 Colt New Police, and .32 S&W. But why would you want to shoot all that, anyway?
