  1. The 458 Socom is already deployed by the military for use in urban combat with good results.I believe it is here to stay.

If the 300BLK can produce similar advantages in urban areas, it too will be here to stay.

We already know the grunts on the ground are looking for more knockdown power than the 556 provides in CQB. So just as the 45 is seeing a rebirth the "30 caliber carbine" style round will too!

I believe the US military would like to extend the service life of the M16 with these types of improvements.

I don't believe with the current administration they could introduce a brand new combat rifle platform even if they wanted to. The expense would put far to much pressure on the military budget we all now see is shrinking.

With the new attitude for combat deployment in urban areas (get the bad guy, leave the civilian alone), surgical strikes, etc., the 300BLK definitely has a place in the new combat theatre..

  2. As crazy as it sounds, get a Boy Scout Handbook. Either a new one or old one at a garage sale or the like. In the handbook is all the fundementals for earning their first three badges. This includes all the basic skill sets to living short term in the wilderness. With a little thought you could expand on these basics and survive easily in the wilderness.

According to some, when the solar flares disrupt our entire infrastructure, up to 70% of the population will be dead in one week from starvation, disease, etc.

When I had survival training years ago, the first rules you learn are you need air, water, and food to survive, given in the rule of "3's"

    Three minutes without oxygen

    Three days without water

    Three weeks without food.

    Plan accordingly

  3. I picked up my SS barrel and compensator from SOTA Arms in MN. Very good price. Web reviews showed them GTG. Shipping was fast. Had parts in hand 15 days after ordering.

I had a supply of upper parts so I just got another lower (NFA G-15) and anything else I needed to make a decent build. I'm trying to finish it tonight or tomorrow. Will load up pics and details ASAP.

Montana Rifleman also makes 300BLK Barrels. I have a friend that lives in Kalispell, Mt and says they build a very good product.

  4. Remember a 5000 watt generator with a 240V twist plug is really the same as two 20 amp circuits in your house. Not a lot of power here, just enough to keep vital things going. Load share is key to keeping things going. If you have a well, sump pump, refrigerator, freezer, furnance/boiler, 5500 watt generator will need to be monitored to make sure not to many things kicking in at the same time. On the 6 pole transfer switch, circuit A,B, and C are the same circuit and D, E, and F is the other, each group sharing that 20 amps total generated power.

  5. For the 1st cut most are using a 3" trim saw from harbor freight. There is even someone on 300blktalk that has tooled a replacement vise to facilitate faster trimming. Then reforming the brass/sizing, trimming for length and so on............

There is difference of opinion on annealing the reform brass. Some claim it is necessary, others say they have found little difference in number of reloads before neck splits begin.

I am trying without annealing this first lot. Can always anneal before reloading the next time.............

A trick to annealing is to spin the brass in a socket mounted on a drill, where the length of the socket just rises to below the shoulder of the case. Set up a propane tourch on low flame where the deep blue tip is about 3/4 inch long. Spin the case with the brass in it where the tip of the deep blue inner flame is just touching the case neck for eight seconds or case turns color (glows). Case annealed. It is important that the case is spinning before and after contact with the flame.

    BLF,

The reason the 7.62x39 has never taken off in ar platform is the taper of the case makes mag feeding difficult. That is why the new batch of 7.62x39 ar lowers are modified/milled to use ak mags exclusively instead.

  6. Wojo,

The 223/556 case is trimmed below the shoulder before forming into 300Blk. Right now it is a time consuming process for creating brass to load, but I enjoy it. Using Hornady dies right now and having just the regular hiccups in the beginning. I use the lathe at my son's shop for trimming, just easier for me. I have a load of canadian IVI brass from 1985 I am forming into 300BLK, seems to be OK. Hell, 223/556 once fires are still only 70/1000.

I am using AA1680 and Hogdon H110 right now to start with. More info is coming up daily as other vendors provide product. I here Hogdon Lil Gun is working good also. Hornady's ninth edition is supposed to have quite a bit on 300BLK data. Ramshot Enforcer is the only powder I know being tried from that product line.

  7. Seeing you want a Glock, I would start out by geting the most I could out of the first permit. A Glock 22 Gen 4 (.40 caliber) with a .22LR after market top (advantage arms) and a 9mm barrel (Lone Wolf) with some 9mm mags. Three cheap calibers out of one platform. At this point you will have USPSA, IDPA, Steel and even OBRAMS covered. Same holster and gear for most of the pistol competitions. Great platform to learn the different disciplines from. Next, a 1911 in 45 ACP, why?, (left field), because (centerfield) nothing compares to this pistol. It must be experienced to understand its compelling addiction. Still by far the best. Then a revolver in 357 mag.

Long guns can be added anytime.

    Good luck and safe shooting.

  8. Wojo,

I have a 7.62 x39 upper, Mini-30, and a bolt action. I really like them. They have their pluses and minuses. Back in the day (early 90's), Chinese ammo was to be our cheap saviour. Well we see how that is going. Even handloading 7.62 x39 is up from when I used to get 1100 round Chinese ammo cases for $79.00. I did work up a load to shoot a 150 grain 308 in the 7.62 x 39 case. Helluva deer round. Earlier this year I decided drop the SKS's and foreign ammo, but wanted to keep the round as I have everything I need to reload. I have a good inventory of used brass but nothing lasts forever.

I think the 300 Blackout will step in an fill a void for a short action 30 caliber with more punch than a 7.62x39 or 30-30 that is easy to reload, have a great assortment of boolits already available and brass that is easy to obtain or formed from brass that is plentiful. The only downfall now is finding the right powder to get the most out of the round. This too, will improve as popularity grows and the powder manufacturers come up with a new blends to meet the demand.

In all so far I am pleased with the progress on this project. I will post updates as I complete more of the project.

  9. While the 300 Blackout is popular in the sbr/suppressed crowd, it is also gaining polularity with deer and hog hunting in the states that permit it. It is also a new "look to" caliber for major PF (320PF) in three gun competition. Rule changes may alter this view. It is now SAAMI adopted so vendors will begin to include it in their offerings.

I like a 30 cal rifle. For me the ease of converting 223/556 brass to shoot 30 cal without moving to the ar 10 platform is appealing. All you need to shoot 300BLK in an ar is a new barrel. Uses same bolt mags, etc.

I am in the process of completing a 300 blackout build. Just about done. Built on a New Frontier Armory G-15 ( aluminum alloy ) frame, 16" SS Carbine Barrel, and carbine recoil system. I will post pics and performance stats as range time permits. Sandy has disrupted my timetable. I reload so the cost of ammo is not a concern to me at the present time. I am working up a load for 147gr to 175gr boolits now. It is capable of 110gr to 220 plus grain heads.

Based on reading and research for us in NJ I found a 16" carbine DI System on a Carbine Stock recoil stock about the best combo one can have. Barrels beyond 16" have no advantage and carbine recoil systems are prefered. After this, the jury is still out on the right "legos" to include in your build.

Some have concluded it is already dead in the water. But, by the interest I see growing in it, I believe it is only starting to gain popularity

Lots of good info at 300BLKTalk.com.

  11. All generators have a gounding lug on the unit. You can take a pair of jumper cables and clamp one black leg to the gounding lug and the other to your panel's grounding rod if its close enough. Or the unshielded cable from the panel going to the grounding rod.

  12. Don't know if your on city water or well. If city water store some starting Monday. If pumping station goes down your out. If well, that unit will run most well pumps up to 1 hp. depending on depth (350 ft). if on Natural gas or oil, unit will run boiler / burner on one circuit w/o much problem. Again, staggerd starts with highest draws first.

  13. You still have time. Figure 5-7 gallons a day. Last year both storms knocked out power for 8 days. I have two houses that I maintain. Fuel cost close to $350.00 each time. Get some cash tomorrow. No electric, no telephone, then no gas. If your lucky enough to find a station open may not be able to process credit cards. Cash talks. Get extra motor oil. New units burn more in the beginning while brealing in. As soon as this event is over change to oil. If storing gas in the tank, use a fuel stabalizer. I use high test in units. More money but they start when you need them and run smoother.

My town's EMS co-ordinator has already received notice from JCP&L that any significant storm like last year, figure up to 10 days without power.

  14. If your not hooking it up directly to the electric panel, if it has 220v service (most at that wattage do), think of it as 2-20amp circuits in your house and hook appliances, etc. up carefully. Big killers are refrigerators (need a lot of starting current, coffee pots and toaster ovens (high wattage appliances). Read the label on all electric appliances for wattage used. Divide that number by 120 (volts), answer is amps. When you get up to about 16 amps in total that circuit is full. The biggest problems are with cheap extension cords overheating. Be very careful using them. Wire size becomes very important here. I have seen cheap cords running way over their ratings. If you limit access to the refrigerator, you can keep food cold by running on generator for 8 hours day. I would not run generator when not home, nor went going to bed. Generator noises bring strange people with sticky fingers to your neighborhood. Be mindful of your neighbors, too!

    Good Luck and Be careful.

  15. The M1 Garand is not designed to handle the pressure curve and gas volume produced by modern 30-06 ammo. It is your op rod that usually suffers if modern ammo is used over time. The way around this problem is to:

    1. Shoot surplus ammo from WW2 era. Becareful of corrosive varieties. Corrosive ammo was popular with foreign countries.

    2. Purchase new ammo marked for use in M1 Garand rifles. These loads are made to replicate WW2 load ammo. Modern powders and primers are used.

    3. Reload your own. Plenty of information available to create great shooting loads customized to your gun.

    4. Purchase an adjustable gas plug for the gas cylinder. Replacing the gas plug with an adjustable gas plug will allow you to "vent" off excessive gas volumes of modern 30-06 rounds keeping pressure within limits. Schuster Adjustable Gas Plug is one vendor (Midwayusa). Remember that each time you change ammo, you will need to re-regulate the plug for that ammo/load.

The plug must be cleaned regularly to avoid carbon build up that changes the venting pressure curve.

    Hope this helps!
