  1. I enjoy shooting long range to 1000yds.  Thus far, it all has been done with single shot BPCR rifles at paper and gong targets.

    Was at a Ridgway RC meeting in PA and won a Mossberg 300 Win Mag.  Ridgway has a 700-800-900-1000 yd Silhouette range and instead of spending the big bucks for a turn bolt smokeless rifle - the Mossberg will be it.  I mounted a Hi-Lux M-1000 scope on the rifle, fiddled with a bore sighter getting equal elevation and windage adjustments and then started making reloads with 150gr - 168gr - 170gr - 180gr and 220gr bullets.  Am finished with the ammo and trajectory tables for each batch of rounds, now the rifle & loads need to be dialed  in at Central Jersey for 273yd (equal to 250 meters) scope settings.  Once I get this done for each of the rounds by bullet weight, I can set the auto dial up Camputer settings.

    Next work step when the weather breaks - drive up to Ridgway, spend a week there and fine tune the Camputer auto settings at 250 - 300 - 400 - 500 meters ... then compute and test the difference in Camputer settings from meters to yards at 700-800-900 and 1000yds ... plus determine which bullet weight reloads are going to provide the better groups.

    And for the good of the order ... Winchester 300 Win Mag brass SUCKS!  Out of 100 cases - the extrusions on the necks for 55 cases were split and the brass looked like spaghetti.  Contacted Winchester Olin customer service after calling every day for a week - to send the brass back for replacements.  This whole process has been a month and a half and still haven't received the compensation check.  But I found a vendor on eBay selling once fired so I ordered 250 cases.  They are Federals and the brass is excellent but work was needed on them because the original ammo was probably military sniper rounds and the webs were too large and wouldn't chamber in the Mossberg.  So the cases were FL sized - web trimmed - case length trimmed - cleaned in the rotary tumbler and ID of necks chamfered  before any reloading started.  Work was worth the effort because the brass is now up to snuff for future use with excellent cases

  2. Hey Sweeney, turn in your CC permit, you two faced hypocrite

    January 26, 2018.  At today’s “gun safety” announcement, Governor Murphy, Senate President Stephen Sweeney, and Attorney General Gurbir Grewal launched a full scale attack on the right of law-abiding citizens to defend themselves with a firearm outside the home, otherwise known as right to carry.

    Murphy announced an intention to reverse Governor Christie’s executive order allowing those facing serious threats to qualify for a handgun carry permit, and to challenge any federal action on right to carry reciprocity.

    ANJRPC Executive Director Scott Bach slammed the move.  “The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly held that police have no duty to protect individual citizens, which means you’re on your own in an emergency.  It is an outrage that the same government that abandons its duty to keep us safe is also working to prevent us from protecting ourselves. Governor Murphy will have the blood of more innocents like Carol Bowne on his hands.”

    Bach continued, “New Jersey is going to have to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into legal recognition of the right to defend yourself outside the home.  ANJRPC is more than happy to oblige and will be at the forefront of the movement to restore this fundamental right.”

    My guess would be that as a "compromise" there will be an exception made for a handguard.

    And if they don't, any semi auto rifle or shotgun with a forearm (hand guard) will be illegal in the definition of 'assault firearm'... as a Remington 1100 or a Remington 7400, etc, even the  Contender Thompson Sub Machine Gun  https://images.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search;_ylt=A0LEVvuD22BaNk0A3jInnIlQ;_ylu=X3oDMTByMjB0aG5zBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzYw--?p=Contender+Thompson+Sub+Machine+Gun&fr=yhs-mozilla-002&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-002

  4. Marty - then there's the opposite side of shooting ...

    I cast - reload & hand load for every caliber of firearm that I own including 22LR with black powder.  Includes 22LR up to 50-70 and metrics.  The last and about the only time I bought factory ammunition was 2 boxes of 303 British from Privi Partizan to pull the jacket bullets to reload them with lead cast bullets for a 1893 Styer Martini Mark III rifle with smokeless and black powders.  Being retired, I find enjoyment doing this instead of buying factory ammo, the majority of which is not obtainable for retail sale because the Pb bullet caliber rounds are non existent

  5. Ruger Vaqueros, 45LC - let the picture speak for themselves.  These are 2000 limited editions with 4 5/8" barrels. Probably close to 15,000 black powder reloads down the bores for SASS matches, no broken parts and still smooth as silk.  The after market Gunfighter grips are now checkered ...

  6. Was thinking about casting my own .45acp bullets  LSWC  ( I can get as many old wheel weights as I need)  I have never done this and would like to know what exactly do I need,

    Based on the responses, not many real casters ...

    Needs:

    Accurate Mold Multi Cavity H&G 68 clone .. http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=45-200H-D.png - pay attention from Accurate how to break in an aluminum mold

    How to Cast Your Own Bullets... http://www.zjstech.net/gunstuff/casting.html

    * Thermometer ... http://www.teltru.com/p-272-big-green-egg-primo-komodo-grill-dome-or-other-kamado-style-replacement-thermometer-lt225r-5-inch-stem-2001000-degrees-f.aspx

    * Lead, best alloy is Lyman #2 - Bhn 15.4 (Source- RotoMetals)

    * Wood chips fluxes the melt cheaply

    * A steel soup spoon to skim the dross from the melt.  Drill holes on one side of of the spoon so the melt goes back into the pot

    * Paraffin lubes the mold pins and leaves no residue

    * Two tin cans: one to put the dross in and another to put the cut sprues in.  Do not put the cut sprues back into the pot while casting

    The key to nice bullets is: Heat the mold (after break in for aluminum's) and the melt in the pot to a temperature so after a 5 second pour, the sprue puddle frosts in 5 seconds ,,, then cut the sprue with the sprue plate

    I ladle pour and here are some tools of the 'trade' ...

    Australian Gun Law Update;
    Here's a thought to warm some of your hearts....
    From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia
    Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real
    figures from Down Under.  It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own
    government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

    The first year results are now in:
    Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,
    Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;
    Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
    In the state of Victoria.....alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not and criminals still possess their guns!)
    While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady
    decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.

    Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns....'

  8. I shoot their 600 matches once a month and occasionally shoot 1,000 yard matches with them.

    FYI ... Joined the Delaware Range - went to the safety class after staying at a motel over night - at the safety meeting, was told the 1000yd range was only used for matches (not available to members on non match days) - Thank You, cancelled my membership and got my money back.  Cumberland Riflemen 600yd range is it (am a member)
