  1. I'll second that that they have awesome CS.

When I built my AR over a year ago, I didn't even install the stock trigger from the LPK and went hunting for a Geissele immediately. No one had any in stock at the time so I called Geissele directly expecting to order and wait. (It was the same price no matter where I looked.) Happily they took my order and told me it would be out in mail that same day. Got in the very next day with a hat (which I wear so much I need to replace it), 3 different patches, and at least a brazillion stickers. They're great to deal with.

  2. It would be great if we could actually flip the selector to the "Don't Give a $#it".

We can if you feel up to dropping some coin on the TacCon 3MR trigger!   :D

And AAC's Honey Badger is too friggin' cool. Oh to be in a free state!

  3. They have one in the Gun For Hire range rental inventory and may treat myself to the experience at some point

I was there at GFH yesterday and saw a family (I assume, mom, dad, 2 kids) had rented it. It's significantly quieter than any of the ARs or the AK pattern rifles that were there at the time, and neither the mom (a rather petite woman) nor the youngest son (looked like he was 12-ish) had any issues controlling it or even complaining about too much recoil etc.

Those 5.7 rounds remind me of when kids wear their parents clothes. It's trying so hard to be a rifle round! LOL :)

  4. The biggest issue is not that you bend the barrel enough to deflect the shot, that is hard as barreld are rather solid things. The issue is that you interfere with its natural whipping motion when it fires and change its harmonics. The resulting change in impact doesn't have to be directly correlated with the direction of the pressure.

The other issue could be a radically different head position but that shouldn't be that big of an issue with a parallax free (mostly) red dot.

What do you mean you can't bend a barrel? You some kinda girly man?!?! Hahahahahahah! :p

That makes sense. I love this forum. I learn something new every day!

  5. If I had to guess, I'd say you have discovered why free floated hand-guards matter. How much pressure are you applying to the hand-guard and and barrel while you are doing this? Try using a magazine as a mono-pod and putting no pressure on the barrel and see if this changes. I'm guessing that you are resting the hand-guard on the bag and pushing against to stabilize which is pushing on your barrel.

I was thinking this too... but then... low and way right? Wouldn't upward pressure on the handguard/barrel cause the shots to be high?

  6. I love the little, packable, hockey puck Otis kit. Cleans everything I own (.22 to 12 Ga) and the only thing I added to my kit is an old toothbrush and a rag.

Cabela's has their "version"... it's the same thing... just with "Cabela's" embroidered on the nylon case.

  7. I just caught this off the web. (Actually... saw it on the scrolly on Fox this morning... and had to hunt it down on the web. Crazy thing... the first article I found... came from Ohio.)

Jersey City is asking 6 questions about "gun safety" to any manufacturer that applies to fill city contracts.

Questions like: "Will you commit to NOT putting your guns in violent video games?"

    REALLY?!?!? WTF?!?!?

What would crack me up is if all manufacturers decided to say "shove it" and left Jersey City with NOBODY to fill the contracts! (I know it won't happen... some less than honorable company would jump in and provide crap guns for an inflated price because they'd be the only ones who do it. Then, it would jeopardize officer safety and ultimately the public safety and it's a massive downward spiral... but I digress...)

    Here's the article..

  8. I want more people to enjoy shooting. And because guns are noisy...  I would very very gladly do something to lessen the report of my firearms... but NJ does not allow me the opportunity to purchase/own suppressors. I blame the government.

Personally I like to shoot just about anything, anywhere I'm safely and legally allowed. Indoors and out. I just enjoy shooting. Does that make me a bad person?  :vava:

I'm sorry that it's loud. Unfortunately that is the nature of the beast. Firearms are loud. (Even the "lowly" .22LR can damage your hearing.)

However, I try to be very considerate of those surrounding me if I'm at an indoor range. I want them to enjoy their time at the range just like I'm enjoying mine. I try to go in the middle of the week when no one is around. (One perk of "working from home".) I'll move away from others if I have the chance to get some separation. And I'll usually put away the "big scary loud guns" if I can't move and I see people are getting uncomfortable. Everyone can get along with a little bit of common sense and courtesy. (2 things which I fear are falling farther and farther by the wayside in this day and age... but that for a different discussion.)

  9. I would agree with making sure you're mags are unloaded during transport. IIRC, 10 round magazines themselves are okay... but you can only have 7 rounds loaded. (There may be an exemption once you're actually at the range to load a 10 rounder to capacity... but just be safe and leave them unloaded while traveling.)

I would honestly take every precaution I could... their gun laws are even more screwed up than ours are.

  10. Like High Exposure, I like the double sided VTAC targets. I bought a box of 100 or so from Midway a year and a half ago for like $20-$25 before I really knew any better, mainly because it was a good deal. But they turned out to be good targets. (I actually have to start looking around to see if I can get a deal on more. I'm running low.)

I also like to have those shoot n see stickers on hand. Much easier to see how you're doing. I really like them when I have the 10/22 out 50yds +. Much easier to see those small holes without having to recall the target. Usually Midway has big packs (25 packs I think) on sale as "seconds" for cheap. (I don't know why they're being sold as seconds, because the couple packs I've ordered have been a-ok, but I'll take the bargain.)

  11. Someone said it before... chicks dig scars. (And sometimes SCARs as well. LOL.)

My buddy dinged up the receiver on his brandy new stainless 10/22 15 minutes after taking it out of the box. Just a little scratch but... well... you know.

I told him, "Good... you got the first one out of the way... now you can stop worrying about the rest that are inevitable, and you can go shoot it."

  12. So Sgt Toadette started a thread about a silly-vilian HK G36 coming out that's not an SL8. Somewhere in that thread we mentioned the HK MR556 and how there's some not good reviews/experiences with them etc. I didn't want to deviate too far from the G36 clone... so... new thread.

    /rant on

Yesterday I got an email from Midway... they're selling a MR556 complete upper (just the upper) for $1,800+!!! (On sale!)

I put my AR together from high quality parts, and don't think I spent that much on the whole dang rifle. (Not including optic.)

Is that crazy... or is it just me?

From what I've read...  I don't want one anyway... but geez... that price seems outrageous.

    /rant off

  13. When I lived in Ohio (during college) I bought a 9mm Astra A-70. Loved that little thing!

Bought it at a gun show on my 21st birthday with a bunch of other stuff for $200. (Astra A-70, 2 spare mags, range bag, 4 boxes of ammo, cleaning kit, big bottle of Clenzoil, eye/ear protection and maybe even some other stuff.) Bought, paid for, and shooting in less than an hour. Best birthday ever!

Then I graduated and I sold it to my roommate before I moved back to NJ.

  14. Bring back the viewfinder!  Should we start a campaign?  :jester:

It always cracked me up how on most Micro 4/3rds cameras... you can add a viewfinder using the hot shoe. If you know that people are gonna want the viewfinder... build it into the body!  (Too much engineer/designer input, and not enough actual "photographer" input.)

  15. The video is good. It's not cinema quality or anything... but almost everything now shoots in some form of HD (720, 1080) and it's certainly adequate enough for most of my needs.

Howard... you're 100% correct. Some of the "older" cameras did allow for more manual control, and even some of the DSLRs and falling into the same trap... presets out the wazoo! To be fair... most of these P&S cameras at least allow you to play with the more important functions (ISO, Exposure to some degree, etc.), though they may make you dig deep into the menus to get there.

Re: scene modes... I hate them too! But... now the manufacturers would rather just assume that their primary audience knows nothing about cameras/photography and they make the choices for you. (Boo!)

I just remembered this website I used to frequent in the past.... TONS of information and reviews...

    Digital Photography Review: http://www.dpreview.com/

  16. For what it's worth... I always believe that point and shoots were just that. If you want more control over focus, exposure, ISO etc.... you're outgrowing the intent.

Usually for the "bells and whistles" on a P&S, you have to step up to the higher dollar range, and at that point you might want to rethink what you want you really want your camera for and how much you're spending... at that point entry-level DSLRs and micro 4/3rds start to look much more attractive since the prices start to converge.

(Full disclosure... I'm not sure how I feel about the Micro 4/3rds format. With a DSLR, the 2 things that make them better is the (physically) larger image sensor and the suite of lenses. In the M4/3... the image sensor is smallish... like a P&S.... and while you get the ability to change lenses, you still have to carry them around like you would with a DSLR. The size savings almost becomes moot, since you're carrying around accessories anyway.)

  17.

Oh wait, two more points.  Don't pay too much attention to megapixels - that is a marketing ploy.  Actually once you go beyond a point on these small sensors you actually end up with worse image quality with more pixels crammed into the little sensor.  Also forget about digital zoom - it is worthless and offers nothing that you can't do better on the computer after the fact.  The lens is the most important part of the camera, so look for one with a quality lens.  I am sure there are reviews out there.

+1 to this. 8 - 10 is usually good enough for most prints that the average person would print. (8x10, 8.5x11) You really don't need 500 OMGbrazillion megapixels. And digital zoom... avoid using it. It increases pixelation and destroys sharpness.

While I'm a Nikon DSLR guy... Canon's point and shoots are really good stuff. I really like the S110 and S120, but for bang for your buck... the latest Elphs are great. Have a look at the Elph 130 IS and the Elph 330 HS.
