i conceal carry here. would be too many exploded liberal heads if i open carried.....and i'm not willing to risk my business to make a statement.

Let them see you open carry so it becomes "less shocking" for them and they realize that law abiding citizens are good people.  Don't worry what others may think and stand tall, don't allow those with differing opinions make you feel you should slouch in shame.

I don't think that's good advice.  Do you drive your car until it doesn't run anymore?

If you want to have confidence in your firearm preventive maintenance is a good idea.  Whether it's for serious social work or games.

That's not a relevant comparison.  As far as firearm confidence, I have DOPE on my AR10 for clean bore shot and non.  Think about this, after how many rounds do you clean your rifle at the range?  If none but just when you get back home, ask yourself why?  If you knew accuracy decreases after "x" rounds due to bore condition thus requiring cleaning, then you do it at that moment.  If accuracy is consistent, keep going until it isn't.

Lastly, I never shoot junk/garbage ammo.

Just tried to order a Faxon Firearms bolt carrier group for my AR build from CheaperThanDirt.com and they said they can’t ship it to NJ.

WHAT COULD NJ POSSIBLY find illegal about a bolt carrier group?

Arm or Ally will ship a Faxon BCG to you and the warehouse is located in NJ.

I sorta feel ashamed now :)

Q:  Are New Jersey Retail or Wholesale Dealers exempt for possession of large capacity ammunition magazines.

A:  Yes. A licensed retail or wholesale firearms dealer may possess large capacity ammunition magazines at its licensed premises for sale or disposition to another licensed dealer.

"magazines at its licensed premises for sale"  For sale to who?

That why i wanted confirmation... How do we interpret the law. Ugh

Looks like the 15 round mags fall into the large capacity magazine law 13:54-5.5 and would prohibit sales to any private consumer.

if internet ammo sales are banned and things get rough... we should all go in on a pallet if it's feasible from a neighboring state :)

Better yet, become familiar with "red, green, or blue" in the gun world.  That is where the smart planners continue to quietly tuck away.

What camo pattern is that on your rifle? Did you have the rifle cerokoted? The old school camo pattern looks very cool vs the digital ones you mostly see nowadays.

    Regards,

Thank you,  I did it myself with Aervoe spray paint, home made stencils, and Bulldog adhesion promoter on the plastics.  It's my version of a multi-cam/old school woodland camo.  It's actually more durable than most would believe and one of buddies can attest to it (he's dropped my rifle twice on the ground, lol).

  7. If more judges follow this type of logic of "copycatting a military weapon" to base their ruling, then the industry will pivot.  Think of how far the AR platform has come in just the last 5 years.  If forced, this same industry comprised of talented designers, machinists, engineers, etc... will come up with a new and unique platform.  At first it will be a few different designs/platforms and like most everything else, a critical mass will latch on to one and the industry will follow suit.

Mil-spec is not the best but a trusted standard.........for now.  Look at Desert Tech's MDR.  They are on the right path and applaud them.  Yes it's easy for the current industry to just follow the trend and tweak here and there.  However, there will be a major pivot with the civilian owned semi auto rifle and it will be better than today's version.

  8. All of you have "Franken-Guns", but most don't even know it.  Most people do not know why similar parts are more or less in price, but a proper education would relieve purchase anxiety.  Unfortunately, many retailers only chase the dollars and could care less.

Scratching and/or dinging a rifle has never effected the accuracy of any of my rifles.

I'm a moron with a $3,000 AR.  Also the same moron with a fully kit out Phantom, prototype spotting equipment and other tools that I use to their fullest capacity.  I shoot at CJRPC/New Holland/Mifflin when I can and share my gear with anyone who asks.  I don't laugh at those who shoot off the bench, have expensive rifles, cheap rifles, unsure of what to do, nervous, not look cool, because I remember being there.  As a riflemen and Patriot, it's our duty to promote the wonderful craft and spread the truth.  When we see "those guys" (who usually can't shoot even if their lives depended on it) at the range doing stupid things and making "the lesser" feel inadequate, we should be correcting them.

My simple range trip usually takes a lot longer than planned.  Most of the time, people come over and ask questions with regards to parts, shooting, advice, help, etc....  I always try to help to the best of my ability, promote the craft, and encourage them to spread the word.  Shame on those who snicker and sneer at others at the range or on forums.

I'm the moron on the right with my $3000.00 1,000 yard steel ringing AR.  The guy on the left fired both of my rifles for the first time and his expression is what a range day for the newbies is all about for a rifleman.

I'm going to disagree with most folks here.
    Buy a factory built gun.
You get a LIFETIME warranty (SIG, Ruger, Stag), in most cases transferavble to your next of kin.
These days factory built guns are only slightly more money than building a franken-AR on your own.
Also, beware the "Experts" on the internet. They will convince you the rifle will explode in your hands unless you get Hyper-Platinum-nitride-titanium coatings with the cold treatments and ceracoatings... all bullshit.
Akin to getting your car tires filled with Nitrogen.
    There's one born every minute...

"Build your Own" - for the ultra-low budget.
Back when I bought my first AR, I took advice of people saying to build it on my own.
Sure, it was the cheapest route... but also resulted in a sub-par AR I wasn't happy with, not to mention it was a multi-week pain in the ass and required spending more on tools, etc.
Then there's always the chance you slip or make a mistake and scratch/ding the rifle in process.
Buying factory means no headaches, and hitting the range right from the gun shop.

    "Buy complete Upper/Lower"
My 2nd AR I bought a complete Upper and complete Lower from the same maker.
No hammers, punches, or other crap necessary.
Much nicer build than the franken-AR, but still missing the Warranty and fit/finish of a quality factory made rifle.
    #2 best option.

    Features to focus on:
    - Barrel Twist - Try to go for a 1:7 twist. Can handle heavier bullets for longer distances.
    - Barrel Chrome Lined - there are other more exotic coatings now. None of them are necessary.
    - "Features" - I'm a lefty, and I know the SIG M400 has Ambidextrous mag release, bolt safety, charging handle and upgraded/enhanced everything else on it. The lower receiver is also reinforced in key areas, and the Lower has a QD mount built-in.
Personally, I like the Magpul furniture. Comfortable and very light weight.
Most of the higher-end AR15 accessories are Mall-Ninja cool, and do nothing other than add weight, and typically serve little to no purpose outside of warfare.

I laugh every time I see an idiot at the range with a $3000 AR15, with lights and grips and lasers hanging off of it, shooting match -grade ammunition at paper targets.
    Morons.

By the way... there are Sig Sauer M400's on sale which come with a Romeo red-dot sight. Good quality sight for the money.
I know of an FFL who has one.
    PM if interested.

  10. The pendulum has shifted again.  Ammo is everywhere and getting cheaper by the month as Federal lays the hammer down.  If it shifts again and ammo becomes pricey and not as available, the presses will get dusted off.

regarding common caliber pistol ammo, many people buy once fired brass, reload, shoot, and buy more brass again next season.  Wheel gun shooters are more likely to pick up brass and reload multiple times due to costs.  Reloading is almost a must for avid precision/heavy rifle unless you can bank roll/sacrifice accuracy.

Reloading is a sense of freedom for me.  "Donating" your brass to the club/range is just as good if they use the scrap money to help fund junior programs.

  11. The bolt and bolt carrier group,

Very few companies make a bolt, but many "companies" "sell bolts".  Extractors are very important but they are not all made the same.  Some companies say their bolt is mil spec, but not ALL the parts are mil spec.  Same with just the carriers and carrier groups.

Save yourself money and buy from the source.  If you need a name brand, write whatever you like on it with a sharpie, haha.

  12. Your best bet is to do a little research and find the rifles that are born in house and not from a marketing department.  Then whittle that list down by warranty.  Soon you will figure out the industry for what it is and for what it definitely isn't.

  13. The last Clinton president signed the AWB that was in effect for 10 years.

If there's one part on the AR that you should tuck away, it's a complete bolt carrier group.  Very few can make them, the daily production rate is very low, and the OEM back order time for these from the tooling companies is unreal.

Stripped complete lowers are not a big deal since the 80% and jigs have really improved.
