Adiditonally, I don't know how you can fail to understand it, but when you mine bitcoin, you are not "maintaining" the block chain, but lengthening it. If you luck out and add a block, you get the coin that goes with it. No more mining, and you total number of bitcoins stops increasing. That means you stop expanding supply on the supply and demand curve. How the fuck and this NOT impact the price of bitcoin?
It's like the lottery, not a 50/50. Sell one ticket and they aren't guaranteed to win. Reduce the number of miners and the guy with the 8 year old laptop doesn't win, the timespan between hash matches just gets significantly longer. So I guess if time has zero impact on you, yeah you win, but... well that's stupid.

I was with you up to this point.

The difficulty will adjust with each block to maintain that a new block is found every 10 minutes. If it does revert back to 8 year old laptops, the difficulty will adjust way down.

The other part is you can’t actually transact on the network without miners. So it’s not even a matter of discovering new blocks but being able to use already found coins.

  2. Nice looking dog, unfortunately a pound of raw chop meat with poison neutralizes it very quickly [emoji20]

Really depends on the dog. I’ll tell you for a fact my gsd will ignore all food if there’s people anywhere nearby.

  3. Except CC companies don't aggressively go after fraud. I know... they've run the numbers and it costs less to just write off fraud below a certain value than it is to pursue the criminal actors, but those numbers effect us.  And the whole chip thing is a fucking joke.

Or better yet, cryptocurrency. Fees are de minimus and transactions are instant. (Not talking about BTC).

  4. Yeah, thanks, I understand the general concept of shorting.
What company/exchange/whatever will let you borrow bitcoins?  Is there a brokerage that will lend you bitcoins "just like in any other market?".

Poloniex allows margin and shorting. Not sure what the borrowing rates are now.

I dunno how I missed this topic. I always love seeing people blame “whales” and market manipulation. Shit, every market has algos trading, learn to be better than them.

Better yet, don’t try to time the market and just hold (hodl if you will) through volatility if you believe in the future of it.

While most of this discussion was about BTC, that’s a dinosaur. It’ll largely go away because there’s no innovation and the current use cases are very limited. It’s been touted as a store of value in the crypto world only because it was the first and is the biggest. That will soon change...

I’ve been involved in this space for the past 7 years and have mixed feelings by the recent mass adoption. The fact that my Uber driver is shilling some ico, kind of signals a top for me. It leads me to believe that there will be a lot of volatility ahead bc weak hands will dump as soon as there’s a slight panic. People are putting a lot more money into crypto than they can afford to lose, hoping to become millionaires overnight. Unfortunately, that’s not the way it works.

On the flip side, I can attest to the fact that this market is changing from a bunch of nerdy teens to having some real institutional money injected. Real players are coming in.

  5. If you want to get pissed off at costs, look at Credit Card companies.
They make as much as 4% on a sale, with no risk, and no investment in inventory.
The state helps themselves to a 6% profit, with no investment in the business.

To be fair cc companies bear the burden when it comes to fraud. So while swipe fees might seem high, it’s really because of aholes that have robbed people blind.

  6. Thanks. Did you build any contraption for rails ? Any time of year these things go on sale (than the 300 advertised) or other tricks to save some money ?

2x4 on the rails. I'll take a pic later.

If you can find a 25% off coupon, that's your best bet. Otherwise, 20% is good enough.

Insider tip, they have large sales 4x a year, the Thursday before the sale starts, they discount their wares, and you could still use a coupon.
That used to be a glitch in their system, not sure if they've fixed it. Been a while since I had a large ticket purchase from them.

I've had one of these going on 12 years now.  I've beaten the piss out of it. other than the occasional bulb and greasing the hubs i've done nothing but add wood for a deck and sides, and paint the wood a couple times.  I keep mine folded and indoors  though, so that's probably helped the longevity.

I have the same one, never painted it and keep it unfolded outside. Still going strong after 5 years.

  8. I got this name from a safe company I was thinking of buying from. I never used either service, since I bought my safe from some place else. This guy might be worth taking a look at. The Safe Man

Yep he delivered my safe originally. I've gotten a quote from him already. Thanks.

I'm leaning toward using regular movers.

  9. If you're moving try offering it to the new people.   50 cents on dollar.   Yeah you're taking a loss but the aggravation is priceless.   You have to offer it that cheap to really entice next people to not refuse a good deal.
Use proceeds to upgrade at next place.

Appreciate the input but 1) the new owners aren't really interested in it 2) it's not a big box store special, so even at 50 c on the dollar, it's not cheap.

  10. Please tell me more, Mikey-San.  I'm closing on a house in a couple of weeks and the estimated costs of a lot of the closing cost line items are really raising my eyebrows.

Just call the title agency directly and ask what they can do for you.

  11. Anybody who says you don't need an attorney to transact a house is lucky enough to live in a fantasy world where douche bags don't exist.
Whats the fee?  0.5% of the deal?   thank god I had a lawyer when I sold my place.   We had to cancel two buyers for cause and one of them was going to sue to keep the transaction thank god I had a pitbull attorney on my side

Exactly and there's such a wide chasm between good and bad attorneys.

The price isn't usually a % but a flat fee and can be higher or lower than your estimate based on sale price.

Title insurance is great but it will not protect you when shit goes sideways.

Also, an FYI, the price of title insurance can be lowered by calling the company directly rather than taking the price from the mtg broker / bank.

  12. Anyone know a good attorney in west Essex / Morris county area?   I listed my house and accepted an offer in one day.  My previous attorney retired and now I'm scrambling for a new one.

    Thanks.

    Pm sent. He's really good.

I had a friend ship a firearm back to Sig once (fed ex sent a prepaid shipping label) and he just took it to a Fex Ex Office store, the one on route 18.

it didn't sound right to me, but they sent it, and returned it right to his door

Which hub? Are they multiple hubs in NJ?

Go to FedEx's site and look for locations that can ship dangerous goods.  Near me I know of Mt Olive and East Hanover.

Just remember since you're not a FFL, it has to go overnight mail - but it seems Sig is picking up the cost.
