  1. It's funny.  I see this particular comp talked about all over the place and the key theme in all the talking is it's post ban compliance.  I've read in at least a half dozen other forums about it not being a flash hider and the mysterious ATF letter.  On the doublestar website is even specifically mentions that it is post awb compliant in the official product description.

I contacted doublestar and also MidwayUSA where I bought it and asked if they could conjure up a pdf of the letter.  I don't think the ATF keeps flash hider info on the page anymore because the AWB has expired and there's no reason to keep the unnecessary documents up any more.  Honestly, ya'd think something so frequently referenced would be easier to find.

  2. I would go with traditional IR NODs.

I don't have a lot of experience with thermal. I do know this:

    Thermal is much more expensive.

Thermal can't see through insulators such as glass, so they are useless trying to look in or out through a car or house window.

Thermal does make living animals stand out pretty well but you lose some definition.

Also, depth perception goes right out the window with NODs. It is very difficult to estimate distance looking through a NOD tube.

This is untrue.  A good friend and business associate has several FLIR thermal cameras that he uses for imaging hot spots on electrical panels and power plants on ships.  One night, about 15 years ago, at his office, we were messing with one of the high end ($25Kish) cameras.  Looking through a glass window at the street and sidewalk, we could see the thermal tire tracks, hot engines, transformers and even footprints on the sidewalk after someone walked by the office.

Now, we were inside looking out, I cannot attest to how it works from the outside looking into a window.  Though I don't imagine many coyotes live indoors.

Thermal rifle scopes may not have a large enough or very sensitive pickup, but thermal imaging is very capable of seeing through windows, at least from inside to outside.

  3. Funny this should come up now.

I got off the phone a little while ago with Tom from HGW.  I am buying my first out of state transfer item, and it's from a private seller.  Tom suggested that the seller contact HGW to acquire a digital copy of his FFL, for the sellers benefit.  It is not necessary for private transactions, but it's a good cya for the seller.

  4. Well, sometimes the answer is right in front of you.  I've been a customer of HGW almost since they opened.  They do great work.   It seems Howell Gun Works does laser engraving in addition to a few other services.  I found this on the Howell Gun Works FB feed.  So, there ya have it.

For Laser engraving, contact Howell Gun Works.

Don't forget that we offer ways to customize your guns! Cerakote, KG Gunkote, slide milling, laser engraving and stippling are all available to our customers. There is also a discount for any work done on a gun purchased at the shop!

  5. The foundation of every rifle is the barrel.  If you got a lemon, there is only one thing you need to replace  Rainier Arms offers a money back guarantee.  Odin Works is very good too.  I hear White Oak also makes a good barrel.  Those are the three that I'd categorize as reasonably priced.  You should be able to find a match grade replacement barrel from the three mentioned in the $250 - $375 price range.

Vlad may be on to something about the fitment to the receiver.  The first receiver I got for my SPR build, a PSA blem, was out of spec.  Would have been fine for a mil-spec accurate M4gery, but not an SPR.  I bought a BCM upper because they make them to the tightest spec, possibly a thousandth or two smaller than spec.  You kind of have to hammer the barrel in.  If you mounted that red x barrel yourself, and noticed it slid in easily, then the upper is probably sloppy.

If you are feeling ambitious, you can get the barrel bore scoped and see if there are any burrs or repairable defects in the rifling.  It may actually be a decent barrel with poorly finished rifling.  You could try lapping the barrel.

Also, check the feed ramps.  It doesn't happen often but sometimes the feed ramps are poorly machined and deform the bullet tip when feeding into the chamber..  If your ammo is feeding properly all the time, , never jams, the feed ramps are probably not the issue but check it out anyway.  Put the safety on safe, load a mag with 3 rounds then rack the charging handle until all three rounds have ejected then inspect.

    Check the crown too.

  6. Pro-Trump rally to be held Monday in Monmouth County

UPDATE: Hundreds in Middletown rally in support of President Trump

MIDDLETOWN -- Supporters of President Donald Trump will hold the first of two planned rallies along Route 35 on Monday to promote the president's "Contract with the American Voter."

The rallies, which are affiliated with the "Main Street Patriots" activist group, are two of more than 70 similar events being held across the United States on Monday and March 4 in support of Trump's agenda.

According to the Main Street Patriots website, the rallies will be "peaceful, positive, patriotic, uplifting, and open to anyone that supports an America First agenda."

"Unlike those protesting against President Trump's vision, we are a diverse coalition that are the heart and soul of America that wants our nation to fulfill our potential, as the greatest nation on God's green earth!" the website states.

The first Middletown rally is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. on Monday at the ShopRite Plaza on the corner of Route 35 and Harmony Road. The March 4 rally is scheduled to take place at the same plaza between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

A group of the Trump supporters are then expected to travel to neighboring Red Bank at 6 p.m. for a meeting of that borough's Human Relations Advisory Committee. The committee is scheduled to discuss if it should recommend that Red Bank become a "sanctuary city," the Asbury Park Press reported.

The first pro-Trump rally will be Monday, Feb. 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Shop Rite on Rt. 35 and the second will be next Saturday, March 4 from noon to 2 p.m. again at the Rt. 35 Shop Rite Plaza. These are part of hundreds of other pro-Trump rallies being held across the U.S., which are being called "Spirit of America." A similar pro-Trump rally will be held March 4 in Neshaminy State Park in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. While there are many rallies planned across all 50 states next week (see a full list here), the Middletown two are the only events currently planned for New Jersey.

  8. Hmmm...  After a quick search, I found Perry's trophy company in Long Branch that may be able to do what I need for the engraving. They seem to be able to engrave almost anything.   I kinda wanted the engraving and anodizing done at the same place but I'll take what I can get.  Maybe I'll look into DIY anodizing.

  9. Thanks for the info guys.  I'll be making some calls.  Like I said, this has been brewing for a few months.  I guess it started in December when I called and sent an e-mail to get advice on what to do with my inheritance after my mother passed away in late November and he never called back.  Then when he started with the anti 2A crap and other SJW BS, well, yanno...

btw...  If you like your accountant DO NOT friend him/her on FB.  Ignorance is bliss.

  10. Yes, but you are on the wrong side of the Pines. Or are you one of the guys willing to work with professionals without meeting them? If so, I have a name as a last resort (I prefer to meet with them).

For something like this, I'd probably want to meet them ftf at least once. I'm kinda used to going once or twice a year for a ftf, especially around tax season when I drop off my pile of papers and receipts.  Lemme see how many recommendations I get first.

  11. Can anyone recommend a conservative, or at the very least moderate, accountant in Monmouth county, preferably close to the Tinton Falls/Eatontown area.  My current accountant is a flaming anti 2A guy and I can no longer support his business.

I don't need a powerhouse, just someone who can advise me on my small business (very small business actually) answer the occasional question on retirement investment and do my taxes.  The guy I have now is actually very good and a nice guy, I just can't get behind his "alt left" ideology.  This has been brewing for a while, but his recent posts in support for a full on ban of ALL firearms put me over the top.  It's time to make a change..

  12. What features are useful on the range, besides 'tells time' and a stopwatch function for things like bullseye slow fire, or the slow fire international events?

A watch that tells time, plus a shot timer, will be more useful for most anything else, plus voice command strings for timed and rapid fire strings recorded on a smartphone--you can listen through earbuds under your hearing protectors if others are shooting on the range with you.

Air temp, altimeter and barometer are all useful if using a ballistic calc.

  13. Champion is good, I have a Champ 3500/4000 which is more than enough for me.  It runs the whole house as long as we don't microwave a pot pie, run the dishwasher, make toast and do a load of laundry at the same time. I give it a couple of pulls with the engine switch off, then flip the switch and it starts right up every time.

If I wasn't so cheap, I'd buy the inverter type.  They are very quiet, push clean power and seem to be more fuel efficient.

  14. I have a few things I need done on the old homestead and am looking for a....  I dunno, a carpenter, general contractor or handyman.  The top priority right now is to get an old chimney tube removed, the other tube capped and the chimney more or less waterproofed.  The chimney stack is not brick.  This needs to get done, like, yesterday because it leaks badly when it rains hard.

I also need a couple of windows replaced.  One of them, the octagon, should be fairly easy, the other, a porch window, not so much as the window has basically rotted out and I expect there will be some hidden water damage.

So, if you are a contractor or know a reliable one in my area, send me a PM.

  15. A person can 'Gift" a firearm to another but that person must be legally

able to obtain the firearm in his/her state.

Example; You can purchase a firearm for your dad for Christmas, but it must

be transferred legally 9HG permit or Coe, ect.)

If you purchase the firearm yourself and just give it to your dad - that is a

    straw purchase.......

Wonderful law abiding son buys rifle (with his own money)  to give to dad as a christmas present, COE's filled out.  not a straw purchase.

Dad with (or without) criminal history approaches son and gives son $700 to buy a gun, son buys gun and gives it to dad, no COE filled out.. This is a straw purchase.

If you buy a firearm with your own money, it's not a straw purchase.

Random thought.  I wonder if any 2A attorneys are also FFLs.  That seems like it could be useful.
