  1. 223/556 is not as economical as you may think if you are planning on getting an AR platform.  It's true that the ammo is relatively cheap, but boy does it go fast wit a SA.  Based on your post though, I don't think thats what you are looking for.  Finding a bolt action with a 10-15 rd capacity severely restricts your options.  If you insist on a large capacity mag ( what is considered large for a bolt gun anyway) consider a Ruger Gunsite Scout.  For absolute value though, I believe that the Ruger American Predator is the best out there.  The Predator is a true .223 Remington, so you can't shoot NATO ammo from it.  The Gunsite will shoot both 223 and 556 safely but it ain't a cheap rifle.

  2. I'm interested to know what your idea is of a perfect barrel.  I'm not talking about name brands, the focus here is just on technical specs.  For instance, right now I'm shopping for a 14.5" barrel, my ideal is 5.56 cold hammer forged and chrome lined with a 1:9 twist.  It combines  the benefits of the slick corrosion resistant properties of chrome lining with the precision and durability of CHF.    1:9 is just about perfect for shooting 55gr and 62gr exclusively. That's my ideal at the moment.  But they are hella expensive so I'll be making some compromises.

If money were no object, what would be your ideal barrel?

  3. Any time I've had an issue with PSA, I get better response from posting something in the "where's my order" thread on ARFcom. No way I'm spending 1 hour on the phone only to talk to some teenager who is clueless and will tell you to send an email.

I think it's great that PSA is actively participating on a forum.  But doesn't it strike you as a tiny bit absurd that I'd have to join yet another forum to get better customer service than I can get directly from the merchant?

  4. Ordered some ammo and a LPK from PSA, all in stock when I placed the order.  Ten days later the ammo shows up but no LPK.  I look at my order and check to see if the LPK is in stock, nope, the SKU shows up as OOS.  Oddly, the exact same LPK is featured on their main deals of the day page under a different SKU and is in stock.  wtf PSA?

Problem #1. They failed to notify me the LPK was not being shipped with the ammo.  #2. The OOS LPK is in stock under another SKU

Sent them an e-mail and two days later still no reply.

  5. A little side note, apparently Sanyo sold the Eneloop brand to Panasonic.

This is actually not a bad thing. The Panasonic ones are a newer gen, about 30% more charge cycles.  Say away from the black/Pro versions, they are higher capacity but only a quarter of the charge cycles.

The black "pro" ones did not impress me at all.  They only had maybe 500 more mAh and were more than twice the price.  $5 per battery I think, not a good value..  I'll have to take a second look at Costco's website and look at the Pana batteries.

  6. The $100 Eneloop starter setup.

Been shopping around for Eneloop deals.  It seems that Costco is no longer carrying this battery line, it's listed as "no longer available" on the website.  Battery Junction seems to have decent prices compared to Target and Wally World.

Out of all the kits and combos, this is what I put together as a starter kit.  I'm going to get this for myself and my family secret santa (which is actually a bitch slap santa).  So for one hundred smackers (more or less), this is the line up.

    Starter kit with 8 AA, 2 AAA, 2 C adapters, 2 D adapters, wall charger.  $34-

Charger with 4 AA Batteries  $18-

    Adapter 4 C cell  $10-

    Adapter 4 D cell  $10-

    AAA 12 pack   $25-

    GT $97-

So, for about $100 this should keep all the important battery powered stuff well fed.

  7. We usually buy Duracell and Energizer and occasionally some other known non premium brand like Ray-O-Vac.  But man they get costly.  I've tried a few off brand bargain batteries and never had much success with them, just cheap MIC crap.  But I've got to wonder though, is there an off brand (or store brand) battery that can stack up against the top name brands?  I'm looking at Harbor Freight now and see they have batteries at a not too bad price, and I'm sure I've seen similar deals at Tractor Supply.

Have any of y'all tried/tested these lesser known brands and if so how did they work out?

  8. As much as I hate to admit this, I think I'm incorrect about the seam welding requirement.  I could swear that I read that last year when I was looking into compliance.  So after looking at the ATF site I will go along and agree that fusion seam welding, silver solder or blind pin are all legitimate methods as long as the length from breech to the exit of the device is 16" or greater. .  Still, I have this nagging voice telling me that seam welding is a requirement for barrels under 16".

  9. Why are people saying that 14.5" barrels need to be made permanent using two methods? Pin and weld should be all you need, no?

    No.

To make a 14.5" BBL meet the NON NFA standards the device must become part of the barrel and the only way to do that is to weld the seam as described.  I'm sure many folks have 14.5" BBLs with pinned devices that came from the retailer that way and have no problems but if the issue was ever forced, I believe it would be determined that they do not meet the federal standard for compliance.

  10. So if i'm purchasing a 14.5" upper  The muzzle brake  has to be pinned and welded to be compliant . And the welded part i'm talking about is the blind pin being welded. am i correct in thinking this way. ???

The way I read the regulation....  16" BBL = Pin and blind weld, or solder or weld the device to the BBL 3/4 the way around.  14.5" BBL = Just weld the device to the BBL 3/4 the way around.  On a 16" or better BBL most opt for the least expensive easy way which is blind pin.  This method also happens to be, more or less, reversible. All of the methods are reversible to an extent, and the extent being access to a machine shop or lots of money to have the work done.

Though I have no choice in the matter, I do not like the fact that welding the device to the BBL will change things.  It will alter  harmonics, sometimes for the better, sometimes not so much.  If the harmonics get whacky or the heat from welding creates tension it will F accuracy.    Once that sucker is on there, there's no practical way of going back.  May as well start over with a new BBL.

  11. There is the "Components to build" stipulation so if you have all the parts to assemble

the rifler in you possession than there can be an issue! will there be - ???

Also if it's a 14.5" barrel, when you have the muzzle device attached and pinned - it must

be welded by federal regulations. A 16" barrel only needs to be pinned (welding is not required)

Right, the device must be welded to the barrel, where the two meet, with a bead around the perimeter at least 3/4 the way around.  In essence, doing this makes the device part of the barrel instead of attached to the barrel.

  12. My next build will be an M4 type carbine.  I want to put a 14.5" BBL on it with a Levang linear comp.  It is my understanding that the 14.5" barrel with a "permanently attached" muzzle device, bringing the overall length of the barrel just over 16 inches, is not subject to NFA regulation.

So the question is, can I order a 14.5" BBL and have it shipped to my house or does it need to have the comp already installed before it can be shipped  to me?  Technically the barrel is an NFA item but once the comp is installed it is no longer NFA, so there is that period of "limbo" I'm concerned about.

  13. A few years ago I created a haunted yard.  To accompany the gruesome props, I made five soundscapes ranging from frightening to silly.  They were originally rendered in Dolby 5.1 for the surround sound system I set up in the yard.  Lots of wind, crows, and generally creepy stuff to set the perfect Halloween mood.

I put them up on Youtube so others could use them.  The YT recording is only stereo but it still sounds terrific.  Here are links to a couple of the recordings.

My YT channel name is Muahahahaaaaaa
