  1. As I recall, one could go to Assunpink and shoot skeet and rifle and at Turkey Swamp shoot rim fire and air rifles.  Is this still true?  I know Assunpink has adopted a non-lead policy but seem to still allow shotgun.

Anyway, can one still shoot at the WMAs ?  I tried to look it up but the info is not very clear to me..

  2. To be clear.  I am not asking how to attach a brake engineered for an AK-47 to an AR.

What I am looking for is info on brakes styled after the AK slant brake design, but engineered specifically for the AR.  I am a minimalist.  I will not be attaching a fancy brake/comp to my SPR.  As it stands now I am going with a simple thread protector but looking into other muzzle devices that may offer better crown protection.

  3. Lawnboy 2 cycle mowers last forever.  There's a reason the equipment rental places use them almost exclusively.  They are also more fuel efficient.  If you are going to buy a Honda mower, buy a Honda mower, not one with a Honda engine.  I bought a Troy Built with a Honda engine and it's crap.  You might also consider buying a used commercial mower with a 36" deck.  Small enough to fit through gates, big enough to cut your mowing time in half (or less). If your gates are 48" or bigger, then go bigger.   If you can afford it, get a hydro, if not then belt drive is fine too but prone to slipping if cutting tall wet grass.  No matter what trimmer you get, get one with a straight shaft.  For the amount of trimming you will do, electric will probably be fine but I'd still recommend a gas powered trimmer.

  4. I am mad for flashlights, have been since I was a kid.  From small key chain flashlights to battery powered lanterns, I've got a bunch.  I never go out after dark without one (or two).  I find the cheap dollar store clip on flashlights very handy.  My battery killing mag lights are sitting in a kitchen cabinet with spare batteries still in the blister packs just in case but now my new favorite is the Duracell lights I got at Costco. They are the single high output LED type, the 500 lumen lights have a square beam when focused, it's weird but extremely bright.  There are at least three flashlights in every room with one being the plug in emergency type that goes on automatically when the power goes out.

  5. I use a lot of PMC when I can get it for a good price. I'll buy any garbage for my ak. Any brass through my handgun

Why stock up on green tip?

Why green tip?  A) Because it's cheap and will probably shoot best for under 40 cents per round in my 1:8 Wylde barrel, no other reason.   B) It took me about 10 months to buy all the parts to build my AR.  The way I figured is I'll be using way more ammo at the range compared to my bolt gun.  So every time I placed an order for a part, I usually piggyback an ammo purchase whenever the ammo was on sale to keep the cost down.  I'm pinching pennies till they scream.

  6. Doing the repair yourself may be easier than you think.  Check out YT for how to videos.  Also, you may not need to replace the seals.  I've had the seals on my Crosman pump dry up twice because of neglect.  I oiled it up and let it sit for about a week and the seals returned to functional condition.

  7. What's your favorite economy rifle, shotgun or handgun ammo for the range,.  Currently, for the range, I shoot PPU 100gr and 90gr in my Ruger American .243 and am stocking up on 5.56 62gr green tips.  Have not been out to shoot the AR yet.  The .243 PPU ammo can be had for as little as $12/box of 20 and the green tips I'm getting for between 35 and 38 cents per round.

  8. IMHO....  Shoot your AR with iron sights first, then graduate to a red dot or reflex, then move up to a scope.  PA and Nikon both offer excellent value in optics.  Bushnell optics are garbage these days but their red dots are actually very good for the money.

  9. Yesterday, I did my own research on the 74 school shootings and I'm glad some of the media is picking up on the fact that Everytown really stretched the truth.  In some cases I could not find a news story, or any other information, associated with some of the events published on their website.  In other cases the shooting took place in close proximity to a school but did not involve any students or school staff.  One example of the school shootings was actually a gang violence issue that precipitated from a confrontation over a  weekend and carried over to the following Monday where a student (gang member) was shot and injured by another gang member as he exited the school.

Some of the stories about the shootings were legit, and that was troubling.  Equally disturbing is that our government is not doing anything to addresst the root cause of gun violence.  Gangs, drugs, illegal immigration, joblessness, these and many other factors are all related but the govt will not do anything about it because doing so would likely offend the voters.

    EDIT:

Even though CNN is calling Everytown out on the figure, they are also stretching the truth a bit.  In the below quoted text from CNN's site, you will see that the incident began at a residence and ultimately ended at a college campus.  The suspect had no intention of this being a school shooting, it just happened to end up that way.  If the cops had not chased the suspect, it's unlikely the suspect would have driven to the campus.

    5. June 7, 2013 -- Santa Monica College in Santa Monica, California: A gunman killed four people during a rampage that began at a home near the college campus, police said. He opened fire in the residence where police discovered two bodies, then the gunman shot at a passing car and carjacked another. The gunman forced the driver to drive onto the campus and shot two people in a passing vehicle, police said. Another victim was shot outside the campus library, authorities said. The gunman was killed by authorities.

  10. Apologies that you can't read and comprehend. I clearly stated I overheard the employees talking about Shooters being bashed on a website and that's why i found the forum. I will defend a place that I enjoy going to.

    ^^^ Wreaks of shill.

  11. I imagine the answer would be along the lines of "Do what you have to do"

I've listened to many 911 recordings from people in SD situations..  Do what you feel you need to do seems to be the usual answer.  I believe, as a matter of policy, 911 operators cannot give specific instructions regarding SD.  I've never heard an operator say shoot the attacker, nor have I heard them say don't shoot.  The main purpose of a 911 operators existence is to gather information and contact the appropriate authorities.  In this particular scenario all the operator needs to know is that someone is being mauled by a dog, the location  and that immediate medical attention will be required.  End of conversation.  By dropping the phone while the connection is still live, it gives the operator a beacon, so to speak.

In any event, using a firearm should always be the last resort. If you happen to have a bat or golf club right next to you, grab it as your first choice.  If all you have is a firearm, grab it since it is your nearest best option.  If you have a bat in the garage behind the x-mass decorations and you have a gun right next to you, well, it's not difficult to figure out what to do.  Is a gun the best choice, well the answer to that is; It depends.   The story about the kid that was shot in the ass while being rescued from a mauling.  Lets say the guy didn't have a gun.  What would have happened then?  Would the kid have been killed by the dog, would the dog break off the attack and run away?  It's hard to tell.  All one can do is assess the situation and make a decision on how to act without hesitation.  A bad decision is better than no decision at all.  There are no "perfect" decisions, just decisions that may or may not work out better than some other course of action.  You cannot predict the outcome either way with 100% certainty.

  12. How much time does it take to call 911 on your way out the door and say, we need an ambulance NOW at (address) and then drop the phone?  The five  to ten minutes head start the ambulance has means the victim will be receiving treatment that much sooner.  I do not think anyone here suggested not intervening in some fashion, it seemed pretty unanimous that some method, whether it be manly man hand to pitbull combat or baseball bat or firearm should be used .  It will do little good to have stopped the attack just to watch the victim bleed out while you run for a phone, that is if you have not become the second victim.

  13. Back in the day (when nearly all guns were still made of just wood and steel) I never had any trouble taking waterfowl with my trusty rugged $260.00 Remington 870 Express.  But shooting skeet was a lot more enjoyable with my friends $3,000.00 Browning O/U.  I don't know if I'd take that browning out on a hunt though, it was too pretty.  Just like anything else, at some point you are paying for prestige instead of utility.

  14. My roof (pitch and flat) needs to be overhauled.  Everything has to come off the pitch roof, two and a half courses of asphalt and  original cedar shake currently used as sub-roof and new sheathing installed.  Also, flat roof (approx 800sq ft.) needs to be renovated.  There is more flat roof than pitch on my house.  The flat roof has been leaking on and off for several years and there's a good possibility some structural amendments will need to be made.  Gutters and leaders also need some work.

If you are a roofer or know a reputable one in Monmouth Co. please PM me with contact info.  I will be looking for estimates over the next two weeks but the project does not have to start until September..

  15. Hey guys, I appreciate the input on how to secure the thread protector but the question I need answered is about alignment with the crown.  The best answer I got so far is to mount the TP flush with the crown and use a washer to fill in the gap between the barrel shoulder and the back end of the TP.

If anyone has a better answer than this let me know.

  16. With the TP screwed on tight without a washer, the crown protrudes by about 1/32 of an inch.  In other words, the TP would be recessed and the crown unprotected.

With a crush washer, the TP will likely stick out  beyond the crown, probably by 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch.

If the TP is screwed on, without a any type of washer, so that it's flush with the crown, there will be a 1/32 inch gap between the ass end of the TP and the barrel shoulder.  In this instance I would use a paper thin washer to fill the gap.

We are going to drill the TP and barrel in one step with a tapered bit, drive in the pin and weld the pin in place.  I may even use a very tiny drop of  LocTite on the threads for good measure.  I know loctite is not BATF approved, it will be used only to prevent any vibration so the barrel harmonics remain stable.
