  1. I'm a big fan of the neoprene scope covers and use them for this overcrowded safe condition. I get these $10-12 ones off Amazon made by occult. If these are the fancy or cheap ones I wouldn't know since they work great and my search promptly ended.

  2. Bio major will be tough. I was a bio major with a chem minor. My typical semester was 17 credit hours with the 2 lab sciences. The labs count 1 credit hour but were 3-4 hours each a week, which really makes it tough. I highly recommend taking at least 1 lab science per summer to ease up the workload. Find a much cheaper (and hopefully easier) college where the credits transfer to do it at. I know a lot of people who took classes like organic chem where the courses were much easier. Plus it helps when it's the only class you are taking.

  3. I knew a guy that had it in Virginia. He started buying A LOT. And eventually he started to sell A LOT. The ATF did start to hassle him as a result, and he did let it expire after he made the majority of purchases he wanted, didn't know he wanted, and eventually realized he didn't want.

im guessing unless you are a big collector like him, you probably won't be on the ATF's radar.

  4. Take as much of the low interest loans as you might need when considering the 4 year commitment. Maybe you don't need it this year but will it impact year 3?

best advice I can give is to tell her to treat college like an investment. Do what you love means do whatever it takes to get the job you love, not taking easy majors and loving the social aspect (can still do the latter though much less frequently).

if she makes the right investment, there's these groups of private lenders who will pay off the monster interest rate loans and give you less than half the original. This needs to be done ASAP when graduating otherwise you turn all the eventual interest into the principle. These private lenders only do this for NYC lawyers, doctors starting fellowships, etc etc. She has to make herself a good, fool proof investment.

My wife and I both finished grad school in 2013 and we are another year or 2 away. We're driving the same car from undergrad and haven't even considered kids so we could dump as much money into the student loans as possible. There is no magical way to get it done but there are infinite ways to screw it up.

I don't want to make it sound too scary at such an exciting time. Undergrad was the best years of my life. If she's only graduating with a few thousand per year in loans then you've set her up literally 100x better than the average college student. Good luck!

  5. I can't believe this is even up for vote. Including what GFL just said, waffles actually hold your butter and syrup, unlike pancakes where it just slides right off and the bottom one gets super soggy.

I love pancakes but come on. This is worse than the pork roll vs not pork roll discussion.

  6. Hey all, I wanted to copy and paste post this from another forum that I'm also a member of in NC. Not sure if it's the right section. I think this is a good cause that can expand our 2a numbers into non traditional groups.

  7. My ammo stores tend to be at extremes. During sales, I buy a few thousand at a time and have a lot. But if a particular ammo doesn't go on sale for awhile then I get very low since I also shoot a lot, especially with the more popular calibers. Ive shot my ARs maybe 400-500 rounds per month and think I'm under 200 rounds left. Was hoping to stock up on Memorial Day but only saw the same sales I've seen the last few months. Maybe 4th will be my time.

I rarely have more than 100 of 308 at a time. I don't shoot more than 20-40 per month max, but not as often until a bit before deer season.

  8. Chapel Hill is a college town so be careful with that. Best 4 years of my life were there so not trying to discourage you, but it is super liberal and hipster. Super expensive.

my senior year they quit running buses from Durham to chapel Hill and that cut down on the crime significantly. Prior to that you didn't want to go off the beaten path. The senior class president was murdered as part of a gang initiation. A lot of my friends knew her and it was devastating for the university. They ramped up police presence to one of the highest in the country after.

  9. Property is very expensive in the better school districts, but they are here. Also, while some of the schools perform poorly overall, they can be very strong at the top. My high school was middling, but had enormous resources from 6k students that allowed me to take 3x the AP courses than some of the better schools (I took 14, much more were available that I didn't take). If you were a high performing student, then you could get a quality education.

You aren't going to find huge amounts of cheap land near great public schools anywhere in the country. people with kids tend to buy a separate, "farm" property that is a whopping one hour away. These will obviously be closer and cheaper than any available farm properties in NJ.

I won't get into the reasons why there are terrible schools at the bottom in the south that bring down the averages or why that bottom is so large. It's really a whole separate thread.

  10. The storms aren't as bad in NC or FL as you think. You know how yanks make fun of the south for not being equipped for snow? Tropical depressions like what devastated NJ (yeah Sandy was cat 2 in NC but a mere depression by the time it hit NJ) is just a lot of rain in NC. Kids are back in school the next day. Buy a good generator if you live on the coast. Bhunted, I'm seeing above ground power lines in your pics. Literally zero of those where I live.

stay out of places like Cary (Containment Area for Relocated Yanks) and you'll like the state. Want the eastern TN experience? Move to western NC but stay away from Asheville. Still a great place to visit with all the microbrews and such but the Obamas built a house there and attracted a lot of liberal yanks.

good luck OP! Feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions. I love this state and will recruit the heck out of any NJ conservatives. Quit sending us your retiring liberals. Even the law enforcement from NJ that moves here are liberal.

  11. I think what makes NC unique to many other states is that you can go to a popular mountain destination one weekend and then a popular beach destination the next. And though these destinations are popular, they are much, much less crowded than anywhere you would go in NJ. 95 and 40 intersect in NC so it's easy to get there as well.

The big attraction to NC for many is the availability of large amounts of cheap property. The further you get from Raleigh-Durham or Charlotte, the cheaper it gets. If you aren't concerned with school districts, there are a lot of small towns that are still close enough to the cities.

There are some trendy areas in NC that aren't as cheap as they used to be, though still like 1/4 of NJ prices. I'd stay out of Durham county. A lot of yanks have flooded Cary, but I'd steer clear of that area as well if the goal is to get away from NJ. Southerners will never understand why yanks will moan about how terrible whatever place they fled was, then try to change NC to be more like where they left.

generally, the western part of the state is largely BFE. I love visiting out there, but couldn't imagine living there permanently. Hard to believe considering how far south the state is but it snows like crazy in the mountains. Again, great for a ski weekend but these small BFE towns aren't plowing or salting the roads.

I personally think the best parts of the state are the towns that are west and northwest of Raleigh. These places are growing big time so don't expect it to still be cheap like 10 years from now without going even further out.
