Four weeks ago our brand new S&W M&P45 FS went back to S&W because the takedown lever would not stay put, and for general frame-slide misalignment. (The takedown lever issue is widely discussed on the S&W M&P Pistol forum.) Because my FFL is conscientious, he sent the pistol back to S&W for me at no charge. S&W returned the pistol to our FFL today with a letter stating they fixed the pistol by exchanging the frame. Voila: new serial number for us, old serial number destroyed. We had no advance notice this was being done. Our FFL, after consulting with the SP Firearms unit in Trenton, determined that we need another PPP to (again!) transfer our repaired pistol, which is now considered new. And yes the 30 day rule still applies. If I had not had our FFL send the pistol back, and done it myself, I would not have known this. I would have assumed the letter from S&W to be sufficient. Or at the most I would have advised Trenton my serial number had been changed. Silly me. So be advised. If YOU send your gun back to a manufacturer for repair, and they change the frame out (i.e. change serial number) and send it directly back to YOU, you MUST IMMEDIATELY take it to your FFL and have them transfer it to you with the appropriate paperwork. Otherwise, upon discovery, you will be liable for an illegal handgun possession felony. I just thought you might like to know.
