Am I to understand that you have can only carry the gun you qualify with?

what if i want to swap between my revolver and semi-auto?

Don't get greedy now!  You will carry that snubby and like it mister! LOL. On a serious note that is a good question and I'm sure we will find out when the AG shoots that email over to the state police. I hope we can swap, but we'll have to see.

Here is another question. Will we be able to leave our pistols in the car if we need to go into a building that does not allow guns?

Don't give them ideas! :D I suspect that even though States can enact "sensitive places", if they prevent us from keeping it in the car would that not violate Thomas ruling? We are allowed to carry handguns outside the home for self-defense after all....

I like the grip safety of my 1911.  Thoughts on a CCW with a grip safety like Springfield XD or S&W Shield EZ?

Other things to consider when considering a CC gun?

I would personally choose the shield EZ in 380 with the ported barrel. I have heard accounts of the grip safety failing on the XD and preventing discharge. I love me some 1911, but production 1911's may be iffy with reliability so depending on budget i would look at custom or semi-custom 1911's.

I am qualified and certified to draw from a holster at TTC in Flemington NJ. A bunch of ranges here allow it as long as you take their courses.

Oh a caveat before i forget, TTC does require me to re-qualify to draw from the holster every year! Most ranges in NJ will be the same. I just got certified last month so im good for awhile.

Based on what I just heard, yes.  The head of the NJSP stated they had communication with all of NJ law enforcement regarding the implications of the ruling.  I took that to mean local police chiefs as well were part of that.   He also went on to state they plan to ramp up their online system(FARS I assume) to handle concealed applications(No doubt will take some time).  He anticipates receiving upwards of 200,000 concealed carry applications!

Highly recommend you listen to the actual news conference and not just rely on my rushed post.

I forgot to mention to everyone here. When i got off the phone with my local PD this morning. They stated that likely the CCW process will be integrated into the FARS system. THIS IS GOOD FOR US! It may be similar to getting another P2P.

The SCOTUS ruling included words to the effect that the requirements should be similar to the 43 states that are Shall Issue…although I’m sure I can pass the LEO qualification, it makes me think that it’s excessively burdensome compared to the current 43 states’ requirements for CCW and potentially could be shut down to something more in line for a citizen rather than LEO.

Right! The RPO qual you take today may not be satisfy the requirement from the AG.

They have issued permits to carry a handgun, not many, but some. Those people have done quals. The process is established, but because everybody gets told "don't even bother, you won't get it" most PDs have never had to find out what process is acceptable

I respect your decision to apply today! Especially since in your case you have a denial already, I guess it doesn't hurt. For the rest of us though, waiting for the AG to provide the directive will assure those of us a carry permit.

I agree, and HE is spot on.

It WILL take awhile for the dust to settle and guidance to the PD to be formed.

My read of the Bruen decision (I’m on pg 65/135 currently) pretty much lays a smack down to even mag restrictions, and weapons ‘in common use’…but it’s going to take time for all that to sort out.
    Especially the CCW.

I know that you guys don’t want to hear this, but take a long breath and pause..it WILL happen for you…but rushing to file for permits now will result in denial. That probably won’t help you down the road when proper LEO guidance IS issued.

I’m with you guys (and perfectly understand your thirst for CCW, remember I lived there for 20 years), but I think it’s prudent to wait a bit before going balls deep.

THIS! listen to Anthony as well. I know were all excited, many of us have training and have carried out of state. NJ AG has changes coming "imminently". We can wait a few more days or weeks to avoid a permanent denial on our record.

I will add this.... I work at a gun shop with a shooting range. Yesterday, we rec'd over 2 dozen phone calls asking about quals for the new NJ CCW procedure. People were getting seriously angry with us because we could not provide any information.

    It was ridonkulous.

Please, do not call your local shooting range/gun shop about this. We have no information to give you.

Yep, just like my local PD.

if they've issued ccw permits in the past, how do they not know what will suffice for qualifications?

Those qualifications are for police and security officials, not us. Even if you got qualified today, that may become invalidated once we know what the training requirements are. We may have to take the same quals, more quals, or something completely different. What you do today may be invalidated later as the AG will provide guidance to the issuing authorities.

  11. I just got off the phone with my local PD. A few points to note based on our conversation:

    1. They recommended I not apply now but, to wait for the AG directive and changes in the process.

    2. They are stunned and are trying to figure out what's going to happen from here. They are trying to figure things out like us.

    3. They told me that THERE HAS BE NO CHANGE IN THE CCW PROCESS BECAUSE THEY HAVE GOT NOTHING FROM AG.

    4. We talked about training qualifications, but they don't know what would satisfy NJ's new requirement and if my current level of training would satisfy the requirement.

    5. If i apply now I WILL BE DENIED NOW BECAUSE AGAIN THERE IS NO CHANGE YET. States are given time to adjust.

From this conversation I have to start agreeing with "High exposure", Displaced Texan's opinion. We have to wait 30 days or more for the dust to settle. The NJ AG said that changes are coming.

  12. I know we all will be going through the motions over the next few days, weeks, and months. I just wanted to do a re-cap real quick and please correct me if I am wrong. The Supremes did the following yesterday:

    1. Eliminated "good cause" requirements and turned the US into a "shall issue" country.

    2. Eliminated "intermediate scrutiny" so that all future gun cases will be viewed and ruled upon from the "history, text, and tradition of the 2nd amendment" possibly expanding gun rights exponentially.

    3. The justices linked the 14th amendment (life liberty and the pursuit of happiness) to the 2nd amendments (right to carry a gun outside the home for self defense). The justices intentionally "supercharged" the 2nd amendment.

  13. I respect what Anthony is saying, but I'm torn here. Would it not be better to apply now when everything is up in the air and NJ has yet to place objective requirements to the CCW process? The thing is we know what the requirements are at the moment excluding "need". Anyway, what a day! :victory:

I posted it elsewhere, but I think it got lost.

I would advice patience here. This is brand new. NY’s justifiable need clause was cast out as unconstitutional. Great.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that NJ’s was as well. While the meat of the laws in both states are similar, the details are different. it may require a similar SCOTUS case with NJ, or it may not.

As of now, nothing in NJ has changed and I imagine the AG and DCJ are determining the next steps for our state.

Don’t rush. We have all been patient for years. A few more weeks to let the dust settle and see what’s on the horizon won’t hurt. Remember, a denial is forever. It would be a huge waste of time and money to get denied now, and have to deal with that at every step going forward, when you are so close.

Like the man said, “Patience is a virtue.”

hmm you have a point

  15. I have used the following for CCW in other states and training in NJ:

    1. Craft holsters- Awesome leather holsters made in Europe

    2. Bravo Concealment- good stuff for CCW and training. Simple and cheap.

    3. Galloway precision holsters- good for CCW in Florida, I used their appendix holster.

I will be looking into either craft holsters or kydex holster solutions as i recently starting running comps.

BTW, thank you  MartyZ for starting this thread! An armed society is a polite society!

I don’t think Gov. Bucky intends to comply with the SCOTUS ruling. So I imagine it will be a long row to hoe before any CCW permits in NJ get approved.

Sorry to be a Debbie downer in the short run, but I do believe it will happen. Eventually.

 You are a debbie downer! But, yeh I get your point. I am going to be very proactive on this, most of us here probably have the references, training, etc to apply. The only item we didn't have which is now removed was the "urgent necessity/justifiable need" gibberish. The next few days and weeks are going to be spicy for sure! :D

  17. When on this very forum I stated repeatedly that one day NJ will get CCW, I was taunted and mocked with snide and negative comments. When I told active NJ law enforcement that one day I/we will get conceal carry, I received smirks, eye rolls, and laughs. Today, after the ruling those individuals laugh no longer! It's a new age folks! A new dawn! Let's put the "never gonna happen" and "your dreaming" nonsense behind us and get on with the business of getting our permits. I will be making a phone call this weekend to the local PD to inquire about dropping off a CCW application. We need three references, a training cert, and letter stating, "All legal purposes in accordance with state law", is there something else I am missing?

I sent my email as well, briefly describing my objections to all of the bills.

ANJPRC makes this very easy to do, by supplying talking points and cut-and-paste email address lists.  You can email all 120 or so members of the assembly and senate in a matter of minutes.   I encourage everyone to do so, no matter how little effect it might have in this state.

I received 10 automatic replies almost immediately upon sending my email; most said that due to the high volume of email received, I might not get a personal response for several days, but if I had emailed my position on pending legislation, my position had been noted.

Assembly members Brian Bergen, Kevin Rooney, Mike Doherty, and Gerry Scharfenberger emailed back that they would be opposing the bills.  None of the Senators have responded thus far.

None of the authors or supporters of the bills bothered to respond.

If past experience is any indication, I'll get a few more replies over the next week, but will hear nothing from most of those contacted.

I got the same responses from the same people as you, everybody else just an automated message.
