  1. I played with the .223 version that was out a few years ago. It melted in hit chambers, it bent in mags when feeding energetically and it shot like ****. You can probably solve some of those problems not all of them, If I was going in harm's way I would want the heavier brass ammo over the plastic one that can get bent, attacked by cleaners, attacked by deet, melted, etc.

Plus if it ever catches on it will the government another way to control ammo, as it wouldn't really be re-loadable. Or maybe just give the ammo makers more power to charge whatever they want as you can't reload.

Yes, but I'd like to know what powder they used. It was the cleanest burning .223 I have ever seen.

  2. The reason most target stands have holes someplace in the "legs" is because with jsut one anchor point, you don't prevent rotation. Which is an issue if youa re constantly messing with the target to tape between shooters like at a match.

Also, the average USPSA shooter helping to clean up counts very much as an unskilled gorilla... it'll tax the welds.

  3. I read the linked thread, not very convincing. One loud douchenozzle with zero content complaining. One guy who seems smart but doesn't know what nitro carburizing actually does for a barrel. One dude complaining about old management. One legit gripe about their dual spring extractor ripping off bits of case rims (which I believe, their dual spring extractor rather than running longer due to redundant springs binds up when one gets weaker than the other by too much. So instead of one opportunity to fail, it has two.)

I wouldn't spend my money on them for several reasons, but most of them aren't specific to lwrc.

  4. Ballistic fingerprint databases are just stupid. For an automated search, you are screwed. If you make it too general, you get back large swaths of the same make and model because modern manufacturing is too consistent. If you tighten it up, it won't find anything because the wear and tear of normal operation can lead to a mismatch pretty quickly.

So what they do is try for something in the middle to pull a "short list" and have a human cull it down. The problem is they shove every gun into it. So that poor tool mark specialist drowns while drinking from the firehose.

This is why it hasn't produced anything of use in multiple states or Canada.

  5.

No need to use harsh words. Didn't really mean to offend anyone here. A few of you seem to want to lurk around & pounce on other people's comments. Is this the exception or the norm around this forum?

Lurk? Do you always speak without knowledge of your subject first? This thread is populated with comments by some of the most active posters on the forum.

Read the statutes, maybe look up some court precedents. You aren't really arguing a very sound position with a less than stellar attitude. I think the general populace has been pretty tolerant and restrained.

  6. Lacquer solvent? Why? Ive shot plenty of wolf and silver bear through my AR and never had to clean any more than if I shot brass cased ammo. The whole "lacquer coming off the cases and gumming up the chamber" is an old myth. Besides the newer steel cased ammo is polymer coated now.

It's not a myth, it is misrepresented. There are a few issues with wolf/tula/herters.

    1) It's got the read primer sealant on it. THIS is what can get in your gun. No it doesn't mess up your chamber. However you DO want to keep an eye on your firing pin and firing pin hole. If you burn through lots of the stuff between cleanings, you can get the firing pin binding on the ugnk and slam fire can occur. Pretty much every gun cleaner I have run into will clean the stuff up.

    2) steel isn't as ductile as brass, hence you can get more powder fowling. If you have a chrome lined 5.56 chamber, this isn't really much of an issue as long as you don't buy really soft brass cased ammo. (ex. federal XM193 is GTG, indian surplus? Not so much, even jsut a carbiine length gas system can mess it up but good).

    3) steel case heads. SOme people say it will wear out ejectors faster. You should be keeping spares anyway, because it's a wear item even with brass. Just remember to do your cost comparison between steel and brass cased including maintenance costs.

    4) copper washed steel projectiles. There isn't much copper. A hard chromed bore should mitigate wear issues some, but even so, I find the cost savings of steel cased ammo heavily mitigated by decreased accuracy. It depend son how you shoot your guns, and if you care.

    5) Matte finish. The matte finished steel cased ammo + pmag plastic feed lips, + cold weather can be an issue. Especially in the 62gr variety with a midlength gas system on a 16" gun and shorter. I've run into failures to feed with my mid length in winter with that combo. The forward assist will get it done, but it's was about 25% of rounds through the gun. The 55gr ammo was significantly better, and with metal mags, wasn't giving me any issues and with pmags was maybe 1 in 20 needed a small nudge with the FA.

That's basically it. I shot a TON of wolf when it had real copper jackets. Loved the stuff. It was actually pretty accurate, especially the 62gr stuff. Since it doesn't look like we'll ever see it again, I finally shot up the last of my supply and have moved on to all brass cased ammo. Mostly federal xm193 and my own reloads.

  7. Never ran into one in person to have an opinion about it. Frankly, below a certain weight and smoothness, it's all about how well

It fits you personally. With the default job, it will stop basically when the back of the trigger hits the frame, with break being just slightly ahead of that.

  8. I have the original burwell trigger job. Breaks at about 3.8lbs. What he normally does will eliminate a lot of over travel unless you get the forward set job. If you like to prep the trigger, and don't have really long fingers, I'd just get the standard trigger job.

  9. If the price is right, I've been pleased with magtech brass in 9, 40, and45.

Wwb has worked fine for me, so is r-p brass. I'm not so keen on Speer because of their dished case head. Blazer brass has similar problems, and I've had lots of them splitting early on me lately (although in .40, ymmv in 9).

  10. For CJ, remember you need to be able to place them high unless you have them way at the back berm. THey keep chanign the number, but I think 5' will currently keep you out of trouble. That's for the 300 yard range.

AS for the birchwood casey "steel" targets. They are total crap. Even pistol will mess them up. Most rifle, even shooting soft points, will go right through. A 30-06 on their "up to 30-06" will go right through.

For the budget minded, I recommend the bunker hill auto popper self resetting plate in ar500. Bolt it to a hunk of 4x4, and drill holes so you can shove in a few lengths of rebar, and you can get them up off the ground pretty well while still being able to get it in the trunk.

  11. I kind of suspect that s&w holds an ffl. Just maybe. If they are taking ownership of it, they have to put it on their books. There is a record of a transfer. That transfer was legal, and it was not in the state of nj.

There's nothing to do. If anyone comes asking, tell them to talk to s&w, and they should wind up contacting them to verify, and be about their business.

  12.

Why WOULD you try and swap out in the middle of a firefight???..if its your rifle, and you're a LEfty you SHOULD have swapped out for a left-handed bolt the day you got it

Nice idea provided reality lets you never have to shoot on your weak side.

  13. Sorry, but you are not travelling on public anything when you fly. You are in a private vehicle while you are on the aircraft, and in 99% of the time you are on private property the moment you step onto the airport grounds. The airlines and airport owners have every right to impose (almost) any requirement they wish

No, they are a place of public accomodation, which severely alters what they can and cannot get away with compared ot actual private property. You want to make a dime running hte public through your spaces, you give up certain privileges that go along with keeping the facilities actually private.

  14. This is the stupidest ruling. They say stripping is protected by the first amendment which is incorporated. They ruled that they can ignore it of there are alternatives inthe area, and cited SI. Went to appellate court where that said sorry, the alternative must be in nj and sent it back down where this idiot said his ruling stands.

    Seriously?

I'm not one for strip clubs, but even so (and living in Sayreville) I'd contribute to scouts run. Nj judges need to get a smack down or too. Usually for something like this to stand that alternative has to actually be in town.

  15. Is it just me, or has this year's SHOT been a let down? The only thing I've found interesting so far is the slim .45 XD , and I don't even like XD's.

Oh there's plenty of interesting stuff, just the coverage this year is craptastic. Not all the interesting stuff is NJ relevant though.

For example.. the mossberg 930 jerry miculeck edition. It's a 930 with nordic tube and bolt handle, an enlarged safety, a different forend, and some beveling to the loading port as well as chroming of the gas piston. Supposed to start shipping ot ditributors in < 30 days, and places are taking pre-orders with a streeet price of under $580. That's insane. But it is 8+1 or 10+1, and thus not for NJ.

Leupold... ignoring their zombie scope... put out a 1-6x version of their 1-8x scope. This is cool because it's still nice optically, but instead of costing nearly $4k it is in theory going to run about $1600-1800.

LWRC has a produciton version of what is essentially the honey badger. Which is cool. If you live in a state where you can get an SBR and a silencer.

There were a bunch of nice 870 accessories if you want to mess with your 870.

There were a lot of good new free float tubes for ARs.

There were lots of good lights there, but one could argue too many.

There was a lot of nice clothing if you are under 6'2" and not fat and have lots of cash.

There just werent' a ton of really interesting guns, which applies to most years. It's not like archery where they replace nearly their entire line up each year. I think what we have seen at this show, gun wise, is stuff we have seen before that you might actually be able to buy. Myslef, I like that a lot more than announcing and upcoming product and it's return appearance at next years shot show for a wrong delivery date, and a special encore appearance at the shot show after that to tell you it's dead jim or might actually be going into production.
