Well, I have to change the address on my FID card. Called the local PD in my new town, spoke to the officer that handles it. He sounded helpful. I have an appointment for Monday morning to submit the paperwork and "fill out some other forms." He did say that he'd just call up to my old town and get my file, so maybe it won't be like applying again? He didn't ask me to fill out the mental health background authorization forms. Anyone else change the address on their card? Did it take as long as applying the first time? I read horror stories that it's the exact same process, but the way the guy I spoke to talked I got the feeling it would be faster. --FCOD

Laminate FID Card??
flyingcowofdoom replied to jgofnj's topic in Current New Jersey Gun Laws Discussion
I got mine laminated at the local UPS store. Glad I did. --FCOD -
I'm shopping around for a Mossberg 500, and I'm having trouble determining what makes a shotgun illegal or not. I checked the list of "assault" firearms and it's not on it, so that's good. The statute defines an "assault" shotgun as "3. A semi-automatic shotgun with either a magazine capacity exceeding six rounds, a folding stock or a pistol grip;" I couldn't find any mention of the term pump-action in the statute. Are pump-action shotguns considered to be semi-automatic? I'm assuming they are, so I guess I am limited to the standard fixed stock model. Is a black synthetic stock legal or is it too scary looking? --FCOD

Went to Classic Pistol for the first time this past Sunday afternoon. They are a great facility with a large, well-stocked store and a 12 port indoor 25 yard range. We arrived at about 3pm and it was not crowded; we didn't have to wait at all. The prices are $15/hour for one shooter and an extra $9 for each additional shooter. Not the best price but not unreasonable either. Everyone was very friendly, I talked to one of the guys about shotguns and besides the teasing (at which I chuckled) I received for living in NJ ("Actually, I don't think I have a shotty I can sell you. Maybe you should move to PA ") he was very helpful. They also rent a large selection of handguns, a few of rifles (including full-auto), and a Mossberg 500. I don't know what the rental rates are, as I brought my own gun. If you live in the Trenton/Princeton/Hopewell area it might be the closest range to you, and I recommend it. --FCOD

Ranges open to the public + rentals in New Brunswick area?
flyingcowofdoom replied to MJP's topic in Ranges & Gun Shops
Classic Pistol in Southampton, PA. It's probably 45-60 minutes from you but they are cheaper than Ready Aim Fire and I think the facility is nicer. They have a large selection of rentals and you just need a drivers' license. They won't rent to a person that is alone unless you have your own firearm (I assume to prevent suicides). --FCOD -
Thanks, but as previously stated I doubt that anyone would accept it At any rate, I find the statue "interesting". Why is it illegal to have an exact copy of a valid ID? Obviously a faked ID that contains false information should be illegal, but why should a "proxy" of a valid ID? I suppose it is easier to identify copies of IDs with false information if you ban every form of copy. --FCOD

Speaking of bringing your FID card to the range, has anyone ever shot at a range in Pennsy? Do they ask for your FID card? I know they are a bit more lax over there and there's a range across the border about 20 minutes from my house, I'm thinking about checking it out some time. I don't usually carry the card around with me due to my paranoia, so if they don't require it I might leave it at home. --FCOD

My gut told me it was wrong as well, that's why I asked. My advice is to not tell people asking legitimate questions "don't be stupid". It's demeaning, and if I was a new NJGF member and/or didn't have a thick skin I might have been scared away. As far as I am concerned the more people that read this forum, the better our chances of improving NJ firearms laws. Just something to think about. --FCOD

And the way to do that is by mocking me and overreacting? There's a reason why I asked first. Would you rather that I had just gone ahead and made a copy without asking? maksim, I did not really think of the FID card as an official form of ID, just as a permit. Of course, it is called an fID card so I should have thought better. One person ("a few people" told me "nobody would accept a copy" so in order to ensure that my thoughts were clearly illustrated I explained fully my idea. The reason I asked is because I was unsure if it illegal to copy a valid ID (copy, not falsify). The ID itself is a representation of receiving approval, what is the difference between the piece of paper that was issued and the piece of paper I printed? That's all I wanted to know. If you think the appropriate response to that is "Don't be stupid" then I'll be happy to ask my questions on another forum. I could do without the negativity, we get enough of that from our shitty lawmakers in this state. --FCOD

I am not sure you understand that I'm talking about a full color, laminated, double-sided reproduction. I work in the graphics industry and I am not worried about it looking fake unless you examine it really closely. I doubt anyone would ever notice, and if they did I could just come back with the original. I'm not concerned with being rejected, I'm concerned about being arrested. --FCOD

Can anyone discuss the legal ramifications of carrying a copy of my FID card in my wallet and leaving the original in my safe at home? I'd rather not have anything happen to my original FID card, so I thought maybe I would copy it using my scanner and printer and carry that in my wallet instead. Is this a "really bad idea"? My first thought is that if I use the duplicate to purchase a firearm it should be fine, since the card itself is not what gives me the legal status to purchase handguns, it's the application process, of which the card proves I undertook. Then again, I don't want to be arrested for fraud or something... Thoughts? --FCOD

Borrowing a handgun?
flyingcowofdoom replied to Pew Pew Plates's topic in Current New Jersey Gun Laws Discussion
No, a temporary transfer of a firearm has to take place under the direct supervision of the owner of the firearm. --Chris -
There are a lot more places to shoot than I expected

Interesting. Maybe if I get a .22LR conversion for my Glock I'll go there sometime. --FCOD -

Yeah I'm aware of that range, but it's private and the membership requirements are a little much for me. I work near Princeton but live in North Jersey so it would not be worth it to me to join. I was hoping to find a place to go during lunch but doesn't look like there is one. --FCOD -

Great map! Now if only there was a place to shoot near Princeton. --FCOD
