  1. Hey guys, I have a question for yas. Is there anything special we have to do in order to buy ammo from cheaperthandirt.com (Fax them our FID card, etc.)? Do they even ship ammo to NJ? Sorry for the rookie question
  2. Rep. Bobby Rush's H.R. 45, which he introduced in honor of Blair Holt, is not bogus, a hoax, or anything of the sort. It's a real bill that attracted no co-sponsors and is parked in a subcommittee for the time being. As far as it being attached to Senate Legislation, that is not true, because it hasn't even been looked at by the House yet. But as far as H.R. 45 is concerned, it is a real bill with real implications if it's actually revived in subcommittee (Highly doubtful, but as JP from Angels in the Outfield would say, "It could happen".) http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/hunt ... id=3899236 To say it was introduced during the "Bush Years" is technically true, but quite insidious. It was introduced less than a year ago.
  3. Glad to hear that, Chad! It's cool how our calendars kind of converge to celebrate different miracles at the same time of the year...I think it's great. This is indeed the most wonderful time of the year
  4. That could very well be a cra*shoot in itself. I know many that are well educated and know the law to a large degree but even the best of lawyers can't answer without researching the topic. I worked for a rather large law firm for many years and got to know several quite well and on a personal level. They aren't the sleaze that they are made out to be with few exceptions as any generalization would find. But the are highly specialized and know their area of expertise well and other areas outside that frame little without research. While not my prime function, many times I would have to school them in certain procedures. I gave one a Cliff book version of Breathalyzer operation until we realized it was my arrest and her client in another jurisdiction. One came crying to me she got a speeding ticket and I had to come to court with her. She had never been before a judge. The point is, be wary of who you take advice from as it's your butt on the line. I've found my local police dept. to be very helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. They're the ones enforcing the laws...makes sense to me to ask them about the laws they are paid to enforce. If they tell me something is legal, then they're not going to give me grief about it. I think we need to calm down. You only need to fear "the man" if you're doing something wrong, just as the Bible says... Romans 13:3-5 (NLT) - For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you. The authorities are God
  5. That is pretty much a basic concept in the use of deadly force. The term Castle Doctrine to some seems to imply a lack of possibility of prosecution which is doesn't. The laws of NJ were last amended in 1987. reading the statute provides little help. The laws as written are simply guidelines to be used in the determination of guilt or innocence in a court of law for the most part. Case law over the last 20 something years has shaped how these laws are applied and only by review of these areas will anyone get a hint at how the state courts will react. Add to that the possible federal implications and the additional civil areas and it is far from a simple determination what works and what doesn't. A dated example is the use of such force in the protection of property which throughout the years has been struck down in numerous cases beyond any other factors. Taking advice from an unknown source, ANY unknown source is a sure way to get screwed. Way too many gain their supposed credibility by reading other unknown sources. Anyone who feels the need to own a firearm had better gain their knowledge from a quality source. Unfortunately they are far and few between. I know a few lawyers whose judgment in the area I would trust Some better known lawyers who claim to be knowledgeable have shown recently to be far from competent in some areas of criminal defense. Unfortunately their competent now has their client behind bars. I find it almost comical that some i know spend hours trying to determine the best holster, grips, aftermarket sighting system or what ammo works for them yet don't spend a dime or more than a short time surfing the internet to determine what their responsibilities are in the use and responsibilities of a firearm. Trust me. You don't want to find out you don't have a clue when your case is before a Grand Jury. I couldn't agree more, rscalzo. If you ask a question about NJ laws on an internet message board, you'll get 30 responses with 300 different interpretations and opinions. Ask your local police or a knowledgeable attorney!
  6. What's funny about all this is, I went through the trouble of registering this plastic piece of junk and making sure everything was kosher, and I have absolutely nowhere to use it! (The range I belong to doesn't allow bb guns to be used there). Gotta love it.
  7. A BB gun pistol would indeed trigger that if you bought it without a Pistol Permit and were caught firing it off in the back yard and "endangering" the neighborhood. Again, in the eyes of the law in NJ, there is no difference between a rifle or pistol that shoots BBs/pellets using air or spring and one that shoots lead using gun powder. Indeed, good sir . But... 1. This is not a pistol. 2. I have no plans on discharging it in an illegal fashion. That was the whole purpose of my initial post
  8. Nooooo Chad, definitely wasn't referring to you. My bad! (I forgot you even referred to the ATF, haha!) I was referring to the individual who stated that I was going to be incarcerated for a period of 6-18 months.
  9. Exactly right. That's what I filled out at the PD yesterday. No ATF agents or SWAT teams were there to haul me off to jail as was predicted by previous poster  ...rather a kind patrolman who referred me to a kind Sergeant who was more than willing to get things straightened out. I love all you guys, and have learned a lot from you - but (some of) you sure got me worked up over nothing! I can't believe I went through all this trouble for a BB Gun, haha! Better safe than sorry though. I'd rather be on the right side of the law, especially when it comes to firearms in NJ.
  10. Yikes. It's not a handgun, pal. Take a chill pill. I took it to the PD this afternoon and everything is taken care of. I don't appreciate being talked to like I'm an invalid either. Now I know how Ralphie felt in "A Christmas Story"...but instead of "YOU'LL SHOOT YOUR EYE OUT" it's "BLAAAHHH YOU'RE GOING TO JAIL!"
  11. Just called my local PD. The officer who answered had a good laugh when he heard why I was calling, and told me to bring it to the police station and he'll give me the paperwork and all to "make it legal". So, fear not New Jersey - my bb gun will be legal and registered within the hour 8-) :hope: These laws are goofy, but I count my blessings. Just wait until this clown and his minions start crusading against "dangerous" guns...perish the thought.
  12. Actually Chad, I can't even find a serial number on it! Interesting. Oh well, hopefully the gestapo doesn't bust down my door in the middle of the night looking for this DANGEROUS weapon!
  13. On the $24 bb gun I bought at WalMart? Of course! Gotta love it. Thanks for the replies guys. Knowing my neighbors and the local police, I'm sure it won't be a problem...but I'll play it safe and take it over to my grandfather's farm if I decide to use it, just in case. Ya never know. :naughty: <
  14. Quick question for you guys. Is it legal for me to fire my BB gun in my back yard? The nearest house is about 500 yards away...(Don't know if this matters, but I figured I would say just in case.)
  15. Thanks for the info, guys. This state is so ridiculous.
  16. Hey guys, I have a question. My mother recently went to our local PD to apply for a pistol permit. (She already has her FID and has received 3 pistol permits this year.) The lieutenant who met her at the PD told her that it was a "new law" that one must pay $18.00 for a criminal background check every time someone applies for a pistol permit. Is this true, or did he misread some memo that somehow crossed his desk? $18.00 for a background check each time you get a permit seems both pricey and redundant - not to mention that a background check greatly lengthens the wait time!
  17. I agree Kerouac...Tony is awesome. I went into Butch's in January of this year not knowing anything about guns whatsoever, and Tony kindly helped me out and guided me in the right direction. I told him I was looking for an affordable 9mm pistol of some sort, and he sold me my first gun...a used Ruger P89. On numerous occasions, I've seen other gun shops in the area try to rip off first-time buyers by trying to sell them a $700 revolver when the newbie came in seeking a $300 semi-auto pistol. Thankfully, that wasn't my first experience. Three guns later (all purchased at Butch's), here I am today, haha. I can't say enough about the good service and the cheap prices that Butch's offers.
  18. I purchased a Smith & Wesson 22A in June. I take it to the range every time I go (usually twice a week), and although it is fun to shoot, it jams at least 5 times every 50 rounds for me. I don't use cheap ammo - I get high/hyper velocity CCI ammo every time, and it still fouls up. :x I called Smith & Wesson last week to ask them about the problems I've been having and they bluntly told me, "The problem is probably on your end." I'm no firearms expert by any means, but I highly doubt that the gun misfiring (for example) the 4th bullet out of 10 in the magazine is my fault. Also...what kind of customer service is that??? I'm sure Smith & Wesson is a fine company that makes wonderful firearms, but this experience hasn't really been good for me. I'm thinking of trading it in towards my next pistol...
  19. Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate it! After reading your comments and a few reviews online, as well as chatting with some of the guys at Bob's Little Sport Shop in Glassboro, I think I'm going to steer clear of Hi Point and get something a little more reliable. I would like to shoot one sometime just to see what they feel like and how they handle though.
  20. Hey guys, I'm in the market for a .45 ACP handgun. I'm fairly new to the gun scene and was wondering if a Hi Point pistol would be a good choice. I can't believe how cheap they are...is it a "you get what you pay for" sort of thing, or are they a reliable buy? Thanks!
  21. Hey folks! I've been here for a while now, but figured I would take a minute to introduce myself since I see so many others have! I'm a recent college grad (Liberty University) working on my masters degree from home...I'm also very much a rookie when it comes to firearms. Yes, I'm one of the people who went out and got my FID and a few pistol permits after Obama got elected . I never thought I would be into guns at all, but, seeing the 2nd amendment being constantly threatened by goofy politicians, I figured I would buy a few before things got too crazy. I'm so glad I did! Anyways, I own two firearms: A Ruger P89 and a Smith & Wesson 22A. I've truly enjoyed using them at the range (I've been going at least twice a week!), and my Ruger gives me peace of mind when it comes to home defense. I look forward to interacting with all of you folks here at NJGF - God bless! Oh, by the way, I'll have to invite some of my fellow Flyers fans to join, because there are wayyyyyyy too many Devils fans on here! LOL
  22. I completely agree, Butch's is awesome. I bought both of my handguns there, and the prices are extremely reasonable compared to other shops in the area. I paid $239 for a new Smith & Wesson 22A and $299 for a used Ruger P89...I love both of them! Also, the service at Butch's is great too. All of the sales associates are extremely helpful and kind.
