  1. Yes, a standard M1 can be converted, but it will be worth less than a papered M1. You would only need to change the barrel and add the accessories so it wouldn't mess up your M1 unless it is original (it can easily be converted back).

While it would be legal to add a flash hider on any M1, I wouldn't recommend it. It will probably screw up your accuracy. During the Korean War, snipers typically removed flash hiders from their M1Ds for this reason.

Don't want to change the barrel just to put on a scope.

So, I went ahead and bought this from brownells. No modifications to rifle ...

  2. This morning the CMP released a small amount of original M1D accessories on the E-store. They were released at 10:00 and by 10:18 all were sold out. I was fortunate to get my order to go through, but there are a lot of pissed off people over on the forum now. The prices were outstanding, but so many people went to the E-store at once it actually made the server crash!!!!!! I guess I was just one of the lucky ones! :icon_e_biggrin: The PINK UNICORN strikes again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Dumb question. Can a standard M1 be converted to M1D? Of course, that would mess up the stock M1. Don't flame me, just asking ...

On a related note, can I install the M1D style flash hider on my M1? Is that legal?

  3. come on now, we need a range report. Lets just hope it shoots as good as it looks!! Real beauty there Mr. Radek!!!!

Sorry, I didn't get to an outdoor range yet, just went to BA last week and shot about 4 enblocks.

Nice balance of course, but it's heavy!! Need to use a sling to hold steady. With my eyesight (w/ bifocals now) I am having a tough time. Haven't sighted in yet. Will try with a rifle rest outdoors for accuracy, hopefully this week.

  4. FYI; check picture 4 in the OP. That is a "Garand Thumb" waiting to happen! The bolt isn't locked back, but held up on the follower! The first time you push down on the follower and WHAM! OUCH! ALWAYS make sure that you retract the Op rod all the way to the rear.

PS I speaking from hard earned experience.

    PSS ENJOY!

That's axeman_g taking the pics and he knows about the Garand thumb!:icon_e_surprised:

  5. I own and bulk of my experience is with 9mm and .40S&W. I have also shot .357 sig, .38 spl, .357 magnum, etc., but the focus of my post is on the primary calibers used today in modern handguns.

Some people say .40 is snappier. Snappier than a .45acp!?

I will be shooting my recently acquired Sig 220 in .45acp and will give you my impressions. I have heard the boom from a .45acp ..., so I know what to expect.

I think the perceptions of snappier (or felt recoil) are based on first experiences (or very limited) ... what do you think?

Please rank your rounds based on felt recoil and also indicate your level of experience with it (how long, guns used, etc.)

I will convert this post into a poll based on responses here.

  6. I still don't see the advantage in a red dot + magnifier setup, other than being able to take out the magnifier if it's not needed (or flip it out, etc.) ... modern scopes are lighter too. Your post doesn't reveal anything new. Thanks for the reply though. As you said, it's subjective.

I think there is simply a coolness factor in people's decisions about optics, more do-dads the better. I like things simple.

I will have to just try it myself and decide.

  7. Most 1-4x variable power scopes in 1x setting aren't actually true 1x... they can deviate from 1.1-1.5x (serious false advertising).

As for the primary difference between a red dot running a 3/5x magnifier compared to a 1-4x variable power is that... well, the 1-4x is variable power, ha. Meaning the variable power scope can shift from 1.1x through 4x (to include 2x, 3x, and everything else in between). A red dot with a 3/5x magnifier only runs at true 1x (without a magnifier), or at 3x or 5x (depending on which magnifier you're running).

I get the fixed vs. variable magnification, etc. ... but that's not the crux of my question.

Keeping aside magnification ... my question, put differently is ... what's the advantage of a (red dot + 3x magnifier) vs (a 3x illuminated scope)? In addition, a variable scope adds more flexibility, so what's the former setup for?

  8. If we compare such (LED based / non-HWS) red dot + 3x (or 5x) magnifier, how is this functionally different than, for example, a 1-4x illuminated reticle scope? Of course, with a scope, one can't just use a red-dot, but at 1x scope setting it's equivalent isn't it?

What am I missing? Educate me.

  9. Has anyone found anything online?

I bought a C91 from junkmanted, which came w/ blocked 15/20 round mags. They actually hold 14 ...

I think he got it done in PA, check w/ him.

  10. I am comparing the trigger on my Stag 2 to the one on my bolt action marlin in 30-06 ... not a fair comparison, I know. The stag trigger feels heavy (guessing 6-8 lbs) and doesn't have a clean let-off. Also, there is some gritty feel to it.

I am not into competition rifle shooting, so I don't want to plunk down $170+ on a AR trigger unless I have to. I was considering buying a replacement 2 stage trigger (Geissele / Timney / RRA), but decided to hold off since I haven't explored the gunsmith option ...

I would like to find out what a gunsmith could do to a stock single stage trigger. What's the typical cost range?

Any recommendations of gunsmiths near Woodbridge, 07095?

  11. Interesting... mine is stamped as Exeter, NH, I got a single 15 round mag, no extra grip, no cleaning kit, just oil and lock. No night sights on mine, but I didn't think to order them if it was an option. Maybe they throw in the extras with that. When I researched it, seems everyone got a different configuration (int/ext extractor, mags, finish, grips).

You put many rounds through it yet? I've got about 250 into mine so far, I dig it.

Yeah, got the oil and lock too. I got everything I expected (except for the 10rd instead of 15rd mag). Haven't shot mine yet.

Just bought 4 x 15 rd mags at CDDN for $29.99, they are $44 at sig store!

  12. Nice. What came in the box with your SigPro?

    Mags 1x15rd, 1x10rd, cleaning kit. I was supposed to get 2x15rd ...

Also, came w/ extra plastic grip without lanyard loop, but it's smooth on the rear of grip so didn't install it.
