  1. Yay I finally get to post in here! Got the final shipment last night from Del-Ton and put it all together. Still waiting on Magpul BUIS sights to come in. I have a cheap (read:really cheap) scope I picked up off CheaperThanDirt that I may throw on there just to shoot it this weekend. I'm so anxious to hear that first boom. Everything feels tight and looks machined good so kudos to Del-ton. Took about 2 weeks to come in so not nearly as bad as some other people have had. Specs: Del-Ton Upper/BCG 16" Chrome Lined Barrel w/ 1:7 Twist YHM Diamond Free Float Handguard Low Profile Gas Block Del-Ton lower RRA 2-Stage trigger Ergo Grip
  2. +1 MidwestPX I ordered 4 from them a few weeks ago.
  3. Talked to Del-Ton today. They're getting about 100 barrels in 3-4 weeks, but they have a lot back ordered. If my order isn't in the first 100, it'll be another 3-4 months until they get it in for me. Seems crazy to wait a month to find out I may have to wait another 4 months. Apparently my stripped lower is at the gun shop, so now I need to find another kit that won't take nearly half a year to come in.
  4. My biggest concern is the gas block now. I want to be able to mount some flip up sights just in case of scope failure. Should I get a gas block with a rail, or will the front sight be OK mounted on the hand guard and I can just get a low profile gas block?
  5. I'm finally getting down to building my first AR, and I think I have everything but want to make sure I'm not missing anything. I'm getting a del-tec 16" rifle kit with the following options: - ML Barrel:DTI 16" 1x7 Mid-Length Chrome Lined Heavy Barrel - ML Handguards:Mid-Length Handguard with Heat Shields - BC:Chrome Bolt & Carrier - Buttstock:A2 Buttstock - Black - Grips:Ergo Sure Grip -Ambi - Carrying Handle:Detachable Carrying Handle (Flat Top's ONLY) - Flash Hiders:Phantom Aggressive End Comp/Brake - Pinned & Welded - Gas Blocks:2 Rail Gas Block with Detachable Flip Up Front Sight - Lower Parts:Lower Parts Kit with Rock River Arms 2 Stage Trigger - Handle:Standard Charging Handle - Uppers:Flat Top Upper with M4 Feed Ramps I know I need to get the pinned and welded break, that's all I need to worry about right? The gas block/sight doesn't have a bayonet lug as far as I can tell. I'm still deciding on a stripped lower, but I'll probably wind up wit the $60 one from AIM Surplus. Silly that I can get everything else shipped right to me, but this has a serial number so I have to use an FFL. After that, all I'd need is ammo and mags right? I still need to look into what type of tools I need to get the things together. I believe a wrench to get the buttstock on. With luck I'll order it tonight and get this bad boy built so I can waste the rest of my money on ammo when the weather starts getting warmer.
  6. Yeah I've heard about the nightmares of cleaning the cosmo off these things. My ideal situation is buying one that I know works and shoots OK, but I know chances are I'll be buying one straight from the crate. Though for around $100, I can't really complain too much.
  7. So I'm slowly building my armory, but funds are running low so instead of just not getting a gun, I'm going to get a cheaper gun I've seen some people recommend using AimSurplus, but there's something unnerving about buying such an old firearm without seeing it first. I know it's hit or miss ordering blind like that, but has anyone used aimsurplus for mosins with success? Or does anyone have any suggestions on where else I can look where I know I won't get a "lemon"?
  8. So I have an update. Got out to the range today and shot both a bit. I liked the way the trigger felt on the XD better, but I shot so much better with the Glock. I felt like I had more control over where the shots were going with the glock. It felt more natural. So now I apply for the gssf membership and wait for my paperwork with the state to finish processing so I can get the gun and start shooting until my finger goes numb.
  9. Over an hour away. I'm actually going this weekend to shoot a few. They have the Glock 9mm and a XD 40 (I'll at least get the feel of the trigger and such albeit with more kick). You guys are all so generous to have people newbies like myself shoot your guns. If I were a rich man I'd buy you all a round.
  10. And that's why I keep coming back here every time I get in over my head with this research. Its hard to decipher what reviews are legit and which are sponsored fluff-fests. I think where i'm at now is I'm definitely between the Glock 17/19 and Springfield XD. I have confidence in either, but it's going to come down to which shoots better for me. I won't be disappointed either way. Now I'm just anxious for my paperwork to go through so I'm able to even get it when I do make a decision. The detective said it should only take 3 weeks depending on when my job and references get the stuff back in.
  11. It's so funny to get people's opinions. Some people will only consider Glock as the acceptable sidearm, others won't touch them. The thing it always seems to boils down to is their person experience shooting the guns; especially with the glock grip angle. I'm going to try and get out to a range hopefully next weekend and at least put a few rounds through them both. Plus I need to finally fire my shotgun I bought like 4 months ago and have yet to fire. Damned life getting in the way of my shooting. EDIT: By the way, awesome post maksim. Appreciate the opinions! So helpful.
  12. Since I've been asking around, I've heard a lot of people mention CZ. It's definitely being added to the list of potentials. I just need to find a place to shoot; might have to take that road trip down to shore shot. I have about a month before I even have the permit to buy it anyway, so I should be able to find one to shoot.
  13. I'm not too concerned with the mag limit. Would I rather more? Yes, but 10 ruin my day. I'll pick up 15 mags as I find them. I think I really need to find the time and a place to go and just shoot them to figure out which one works for me. Just on a side note: Since I've been looking into what pistol, I've avoided Glock because of the price, but now that's somehow managed to become the lower priced option. Mind. Blown.
  14. I don't know why I thought M&P was more expensive. I guess I just made that up. About the mag limit: Can you just not buy magazines in NJ that are over 10 rounds, or are you only allowed to load 10 in? Like are the mags altered to only allow 10, or is it just an enforced rule? And with the GSSF, I just join for $35 and I can buy a glock for ~$425?
  15. Sadly, my big limiting factor is price, and the S&W was a bit out of my range. Glock only made it in because of places trying to get rid of gen3 (I assume). But yes, I'm in Mine Hill, so if I ever do come across some funds to expand my selection, I may wind up bothering you =P thanks!
  16. I'm up in Morris County which is a good hour and a half away from Shore Shot unfortunately. I've held them both for a very brief moment and leaded toward the XD. I really do need to find a place to just shoot both of them though.
  17. So let me start this off by apologizing for being "that guy" who comes asking this type of question. I totally understand that it's completely a matter of opinion, but a lot of you [read] are a hell of a lot more experienced than I so I come to you and beg. I'm about to start the paperwork to get my pistol purchase permit (I feel stupid every time I say that aloud, btw) and I'm torn between the XD9 and a Glock17. At first I was not considering Glocks because of the price, but I guess with the new generation coming out places are dropping the 3rd gen models. For a loose idea I've been checking thegunsource.com for prices and the Glock is actually $20 cheaper. I was also looking at the SR9 but keep hearing it has some issues with the trigger pull; and the other options have more of loyal fan base. I guess I'm just looking for opinions of people who have experience with both.

    Getting a combo

I actually thought I just confirmed that the combo does not exist in the color I want, but Impact has the security combo in the synthetic stock! The image says it's a Davidson Exclusive. Possibly that's why it's been such a pain to get a hold of? Regardless, it's good to know it actually exists.

    Getting a combo

Tried Dicks. None in my area have it, and said their vendor probably doesn't have it either. They didn't seem all that interested in finding out for me either. I may have to stop by and press them to make a few phone calls to find out if they can get it.

    Getting a combo

So I've finally decided on what I'm going to get (thanks in part to your advice), but now I've been struggling to track down a place where I can buy it. I want the Mossberg 500 security/field synthetic combo, but can't find it anywhere. I've had a few places looking for it for like 2 weeks now with no luck. Is this normal? Is the combo I'm looking for that rare? Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm in Morris County, but willing to make a reasonable drive to get this. It's frustrating that I had to wait over a month just to get the dumb card, and now it's looking like at least another month to get the gun (with the holidays and all).
  21. In good time. Currently the funds don't allow that. As is I'm getting either a shotgun or rifle now, and hopefully a pistol in the next month. I am going to ask another question that shows my ignorance: What is the difference between the 590 and 500?
  22. Honestly, I'm not worried about skeet that much. I've only done it a few times and it was with a pump and I had fun. However this hits on my flip-flopping between shotgun and rifle. I feel like it's easier to go target shooting than skeet shooting, and since I'm not doing it ofter it would probably be easier to get out and shoot the rifle when I do have the time.
  23. Before I went to the store, I actually was really heavily leaning toward Mossberg. I liked the idea that the equivalent models to the Remington had a larger capacity, and I always liked the Mossberg look a bit more (Vanity is a sin, I know). However, the Remington felt like it was more solid (that's the best word I can think of) and in a bunch of reviews, most people seem to lean toward Remington. Also, the few stores I've been to seem to have much fewer Mossbergs than Remingtons, so shopping is also harder.
  24. I'm in Wharton. There's a gun shop in the next town over called The Silver Bullet that I was going to go check out tonight. I feel like I might get more of a straight answer in dedicated gun shop than a chain type place. The guy seemed like he knew what he was talking about, but when he kinda steered me away from one gun in favor of a combo, I got a little hesitant.
  25. So I finally got my FID and am preparing to buy a shot gun (again, thanks for all your input). I went to Ramsey Outdoor to talk to someone and just get some recommendations (I tried Dick's, and I felt like the guy just didn't want to be bothered). I told him what I was looking for (HD shutgun that I could use for very occasional and casual skeet). I asked about a tactical remmington 870 they had with an 18" barrel. I asked if I could just get a different barrel for skeet shooting and he said that it would be a bad idea... This confused me because I thought for sure the answer would be yes, but seeing as how I'm still very ignorant to this stuff I didn't push it any further. The shot gun didn't look to have anything custom. He did say they sold a 870 combo that would come with the 2 barrels, but they only had that with the wood style pump and stock which I didn't want. On top of all this, I'm considering just getting a rifle for target shooting for now, so I'm all over the place with what I'm doing... I need a mentor...
