  1. I am chiming in late but anyway.....  Some of the answers are jumping out a bit.  You can't just gear up and hit the 1000  range.

These are the basics for me. Get a good zero at 100. Get a ballistics chart for the ammo you shot. Then  shoot 300. Then try an F Class at 600. Then work on 1000.

You need a good scope with enough clicks to get to 1000. This gets expensive.

I have done 600 so far and that was not a  big deal. Except my scope was good only to about 850 yards. I even had a 10 moa biased rail which was not enough.  The new  scope cost about $550. (List $700.)

You can find 300 at South Jersey RPC  and Central Jersey RPC.  F Class  600  at Cumberland, Millville, NJ.

I will probably take a spring/summer trip to PA or WV to shoot 1000.

    That is all.

  2. The new Hornady tool is very sharp and crispy. Pockets are shiny brass.  Still not getting much depth but results definitely better and acceptable. Kinda depends on brass mfgr.

I think the moral is  -- check your tools and don't use if  worn out.  So basic and obvious yet here I am!!!

Now I have to go check my case trimming tool. LOL.

Appreciate the help Gents. You guys are good!!

Keep em in the 10 ring.

  3. Lake is 118,  116, 120   (3 samples)

    Federal 117, 120, 119

    GFL  120, 121, 119

Tool hard to measure, maybe 115 BUT looks awful at x30 mag. Edges are not sharp.  I ordered a new tool and I bet that will do it.

Anyway what depth are you getting for an installed primer??

    Really appreciate your help.

  4. I reload 223 with CCI #41 mil primers. Seem to have trouble getting depth especially with Lake and Federal brass.  Lucky if they are -.001 or -.002. Sometimes +.001 or +.002.

Primer pockets are thoroughly prepped with three tools.  I use both a hand tool and my press inserter gadget.  There is no mil crimp problem here.

So what depth should I expect  and how do I achieve that?

I have no such problem with 9mm or 308 WIN.

    Thanks for the help.

  5. 5 hours ago, RichP said:

FWIW - 99% of the hunting ammo that is used in NJ is a hollowpoint of some sort (obviously not birdshot/buckshot). As a matter of fact, NJ Fish and Game regulations specifically call for " Max. 80 grain Soft or Hollow point " rifle ammo for varmint hunting.

Just my opinion, but I consider any expanding, hollow-cavity bullet a hollow-point; whether or not is is labeled as such, or has a plastic tip. You can buy solid, lathe-turned match bullets, but they will not be cheap and very poor for defense.

Pretty much agree with both points.  But telling the cops I was hunting with 308 HP won't fly. No 308 hunting  in NJ.  To / from range no problem. But then you have the accidents,  f ups and so on.  And the big law enforcement sport in NJ is crucifixion.

I just wanted to simplify. No HP in vehicle = no problems with cops.

  6. I reload (223) 68gr HPBT and (308) 168gr HPBT. Being in NJ I would like to stop this.

So what performance bullets are NOT HP?? And who says which are which?? Does it have to say   'HP' on the box??

Example. Hornady ELD MAtch. Hole in tip with chunk of red plastic stuffed in.  The hole is hollow, no?

    Thanks for any advise.

  7. We have lots of discussions here about heading to NC, AZ ,FL etc.

Well if the Demo Dude becomes Gov. of FL you better look out.

His top priority = AWB and more. May have to remove FL from the list.

  8. Had this done 25 years ago. Watch out for the remediation company. They will take all your money and more. They will find oil in the soil 50 yards from the tank.  They will find one drop in a truckload of dirt.

They wanted to rip my house foundation apart to further look for oil.

Eventually the NJ State dude checked it all out  and told them stop already. I got a report maybe 100 pages long - like they were inventing a nuclear bomb.

The law is over the top in the first place and then the remediators make it worse with super conservative interpretations.

    Good luck with the project.

  9. Thanks Gents. I really mean it. As usual you have educated me.

I will still be twitching from the guy at the next table. LOL.

As for my jerkness - yah a little intentional though. Hey I used to be an Altar Boy but got fired for sneaking too much wine.

  10. I am not trying to piss you off but I just might anyway. Why does anybody put a brake on an AR? ARs have no kick. My Rock River is 20 inch SS with a match trigger and irons, I can put my nose on the charge handle all day, shoot a bunch and draw no blood.

At the range the guy on the left and guy on the right are pounding my brains out.

    Is this it??

    1. A muzzle brake is pretty

    2. You imagine some terrible recoil.

    3. Shooter is a sissy. LOL and HA.

OK maybe I am the SISSY.  Once more: ARS HAVE NO KICK. It's a big 22.   Amen. Can I get a Hallejluia?? (sp)

Get a 308 and you might want a brake. And the guy next to you will really  be pissed.

    Thanks.

  11. Recently you guys all helped me understand trap/skeet/barrel length. Thanks again.

So now I have 28 inches on my Mossberg pump.  Still short but so be it. Which choke should I use for trap?  Choices are Improved, modified or full.  Just so you know I do not have cylinder bore available.

    Thanks.

  12. I am glad  that I asked the question. Thank you all  for your reasoned and intelligent answers. I am now more educated. How come said range (14) could not tell me what you guys told me? Strange. At one point they VERY politely told me to find another range. True. LOL.

Yes I will be at the rally.

A little more... so why don't they outlaw 18 inch barrels?  Seems  that would make sense. The ammo deal is not how many I load. It is the total capacity of the gun.

So it looks like a little snootery in Skeetery. eh? Well I CAN shoot Hi Power without the 20 lb. shooting coat. They are not up tight. HA.  (Thank you John at CJRPC.)

Clinton WMA - here I come. That will bring me to my shooting senses!!  But I like 'learn by doing' or not.

So can I shoot my AR at a Garrand match? Just kidding. Just kidding. Just kidding.

    Thanks again.

  13. I would like to  try trap / skeet  at my range. I have a self defense pump 12 gauge.  Said range has outlawed my gun. Holds more than two shells and has pistol grip.

I know how to shoot safely. I know my gun is NOT a skeet gun. (Who cares??) But I just want to have some fun. No intention to shoot in any official  match.

So somebody tell me reasonably and logically why my gun is forbidden.  Said range has no answer.    It appears they are like maybe NJ - arbitrary, unreasonable, etc.

    Thank you.

  14. Let's make some distinctions.

    Long gun or handgun.

You have or don't have an FID card.

My understanding (from reading the laws) was that you could transport a long gun almost anywhere, anytime , range or no range IF YOU HAVE FID.  But handguns are severely restricted even with FID.  Transport for range, buy/sell, repair  only.

If I am wrong please add to my confusion. Thanks Gents and Ladies.

  15. Guess I am out of touch. Live in a cave.

Went to So. J. for Frozen Nutz shoot today.  Completely dead. No cars, no people.  Retail shop gutted.  Looked like a dance floor.

Did they miss a lease payment????????????  A great range is going to waste. Anybody know the story?
