  1. So after buying my wife a ridiculously overpriced watch for her christmas present I decided I wanted the 10/22 takedown. Well, after searching a few places locally I finally found one at Dicks in South Plainfield and convinced her to pick it up while they were still in stock, I love this thing and can't wait to get it to the range!
  2. That harbor freight actually looks like a pretty sweet deal, how heavy is it?
  3. I am in the market for a new safe to begin expanding my collection, does anyone here know of any good deals that are going to be going on this next week or during the holiday season that I might want to take advantage of? Im trying to keep it in the $300 and lower range as it will actually be a gift from my wife after I spent more than that on a freaking watch lol. Thanks guys and happy holidays to you all! 7-3-2
  4. Hey guys, even though I'm still debating full siz vs carbine I know for a fact I'm aiming to make it lightweight (so most likely I'm going carbine) ANYWAY, I am looking at the MOE fixed and ACE skeleton stocks as I figure they must be pretty lightweight. Can anyone tell me of any other options I am missing out there that I might want to look into before I pull the trigger on either of these guys?
  5. Too bad my lower is magnesium and not aluminum lol, ill just figure something out haha.
  6. Yeah, I figure as long as it doesn't screw up the operation of the gun then what is the point of worrying about it. I also I don't plan on selling the thing so I am starting to be at peace with my little fudge-up. I'll give the sharpie approach a try, thanks.
  7. On a side note, why cant I edit my posts from my phone? ** edit ** disregard, I figured it out.
  8. I guess next time I could swing for roll pin punches instead ... Oh and I guess I shouldnt start off a few beers in. All in all, I don't think its too bad for my first time with tools specific to the job.
  9. Yeah, It really doesn't bother me. If anything it gives it character lol.
  10. Heres a look at my newly assembled lower with the damage I was talking about … its really not all that bad honestly. and now for the damage
  11. Vjf its just an assembled lower but ill post pics tonight anyway, maybe I can't give you all a shot of the scratch too.
  12. I actually should've taped the roll pin to the end of the punch itself and layered tape along the aide of the lower like I saw in a YouTube video today ... :/ My only fear is that the lower if made of magnesium instead of aluminum and I hope exposing the metal a bit won't lead to corrosion issues in the future. From what I've read about magnesium is that it doesn't rust but it does corrode. The mark is minimal so I really doubt it'll turn into any kind of issue honestly.
  13. Respect, only thing I've seen was putting tape everywhere lol. I probably couldve used a non-marring punch instead but I didn't.
  14. Yeah, im pretty sure these types of marks are common but it sucks lol. BTW, not sure if anyone care but the hogue grip that comes with the MAG tactical LPK is pretty awesome! I am very happy with my choice, wish the kit came with the extended pins that the lower requires though.
  15. Makes sense, thanks for the heads up. I wouldnt ever just let the hammer fly figuring it would damage something upon contact, just wanted to make sure that the contact between the two was normal after assembly. Kinda bummed about the finished being marred a bit but hey thats what happens when you use steel punches I guess, just hope that it doesnt amount to any problems with the lower being made of magnesium and all and not aluminum, maybe ill just touch it up with something. Other than that this thing was pretty simple to put together, the hardest part was identifying the separate pieces lol.
  16. So last night after SOA (best show ever) I decided to assemble my Mag Tactical Lower with the Mag tactical LPK, everything went together pretty smoothly except for a little slip which caused me to scratch the finish near the bolt catch roll pin .. ::sigh:: oh wel what's done is done right? Now for my question, when the hammer is not depressed I noticed that it is actually in contact with the bolt release and therefore making it difficult to operate the bolt release when the hammer is not depressed, is this normal?
  17. Thats not normal imo, again I'm new to this as well but most LPK's include pistol grips from what I've seen and this includes the one that I'm getting from the FFL this week.
  18. Thanks guys!! I feel confident that I will be able to build a pretty awesome lightweight rifle now .. this Mag Tactical lower is ridiculously lightweight and I'm just going to run with it now. As far as uppers, I guess since I already have the lower and LPK on I'll have to be smart and only order compliant uppers in order to avoid any issue with the law. So 16 inches is the minimum length, fixed muzzle and no bayonet lug and I'm good to go? Excuse my limited knowledge but the 16" limit is the barrel or the whole upper?
  19. I'm forced to work that day cause of these shopping nuts!! I work loss prevention right now and this day unfortunately pulls away from my holiday .... ANIMALS!! lol
  20. Thanks man, Google is the WORST! I'm imagining the naysayers on this subject are kind of the equivalent of people who will tell you that a pinched nerve could = a heart attack if you were to search the symptoms. I love the fact that I can come on here an get some good genuine advice from guys who know what I'm talking about.
  21. Thanks Midwest! I was just doing some research on google and there is a bunch of posts saying its not smart to build your own. Ill definitely purchase a complete upper the first time around if thats what will make things the easiest/safest. Now as far as NJ legal complete uppers, is there anyone out there that specializes in this or am I just ordering any upper that will meet the minimum length and has the option of a fixed muzzle?
  22. So I already purchased a Mag Tactical lower and am planning on picking up the Mag Tactical parts kit this week from my local shop. This would be my first ever AR-15 and I've never even shot one before, do you guys think I m in over my head attempting to build one? My dilemma is that I don't have the cash to drop on a finished piece right now so I figured I'd put it together a little bit at a time plus I'd get familiar with the platform this way. Is this the wrong approach and am I risking injury by attempting to build an AR without any previous experience? In other words, how difficult is it exactly, I'm not a knucklehead and figure there are tons of helpful videos on youtube/brownells etc. Thanks!
  23. Yeah, I would rather not worry about opinion. Honestly, if a law is being debated by two different perspectives then I would much rather stay on the side of caution until PROVEN otherwise.
