Sighted in and toyed with the gun I just bought my gf.  She wanted to get into rifle shooting.  We picked up a Savage Axis II in .223/weaver 3-9x combo.  After sighting it in she we were both shooting 1"-1.25" groups (some flyers) with cheap pmc or federal 55gr ammo at 100yds.  For not having any real experience with long guns, she is pretty impressive.  She wants to move out to 200-300 yards and see how that goes.

I'm not much of a bolt gun shooter, any tips for us on how to stay consistent and reduce groups?

Nice gun.  Have you taken the NRA basic rifle course?  One of the things I remember were the breathing techniques and respiratory pause.  Additionally a smooth trigger pull (not jerking the finger) helps with aiming as well.

  2. Make sure you grab up some extra lower common spring and detent parts! You will inevitably loose one or the other during a build. It kills the build buzz if you don't have spares around. Have fun!

I've built all four of my AR rifles and without fail every time I shoot a detent or a spring half way across the room, sage advice.

  3. I've been doing it for about ten years now.  Here's the deal, the Hudson Country region is so saturated with commuters that no matter where you are (even right outside the GW, Lincoln or Holland) you can expect a 30-60 minute commute.  It's a shit show once in a while for commuters outside the county (I take the NJ transit 128/165/168 line).  The NY taxes only cover up to 98% of NJ taxes and I wind up writing a small check to NJ once a year, no biggie though.  The biggest gripes I have are the Port Authority waits to get on and get off a bus, that terminal needs to be demolished and rebuilt but the just nixed a plan to do so.  In regards to doing it from PA, good luck.

  4. If you guys have 10 minutes, this will drive you nuts. I found this a few years ago:

    http://forum.pafoa.org/concealed-open-carry-121/191382-we-came-here-get-away-guns.html

Short version - NY couple moves to PA to get away from guns, sicks their NYC cop relative on their PA neighbor that owns and carries, trying to intimidate and threaten him. Hilarity ensues. If you are short on time just look for the OP's posts, I never got through the whole thing. I know it has a very happy ending :)

Reading through that pafoa thread now on page 16 and it's nothing but hilarity.

  5. they don't care about nationwide ccw reciprocity.  if they did, the could easily attach it to any of the must sign laws they sent to obama. they don't and they won't.

Because the President would veto it instantly.  It's a game of cat and mouse except when the mouse has veto power.  In regards to the 9th and 7th vs the 2nd, 3rd and 4th circuits if the 9th reverses the decision then SCOTUS will be less inclined to hear any case.  Given that we don't know who the ten judges and the chief justice will be in the review it's really a craps shoot at this point.  It's 50/50.  For those of us in the jurisdictions where the states don't recognize the right to carry it will ultimately mean you will have to move or become cattle.

  6. Mind you, that 9mm would have probably driven the lens into your skull, but that's not really the point.

Haha!  Yeah the safety glasses I'm looking at are not for catching bullets with my face but to prevent the "oh shit" moments that would be prevented with normal safety glasses.  I'm working with my doctor to get a RX to one of Rudy's authorized dealers to get them made, going to cost me a mint I am told.

  7. I went to the eye doctor on Friday and found out I have astigmatism in both eyes, which would explain why on a red dot sight the dot would split into two dots one heading towards 2 o'clock and the other one heading to 8 o'clock.  I brought up the discussion about getting eye wear that is a little bit more durable when I'm working on guns or going to the range.  I expected him to be a doctor who was an anti but he blew my mind when he said he was looking to buy a Glock in .357, so the discussion continued but he said he didn't offer any frames or lenses that wold foot the bill but the poly carbonate lenses are shatter proof so I went with those and transition functionality as well (they are UV and anti-scratch as well).

I was really pleased but now I'm in the hunt for eye glasses that a shooter could use at the range or during training.  I've been googling around and seeing what my options are.  What do you guys use and did your insurance cover any of it?  I have a VSP plan through my corporation.

  8. NJ has many problems.  The ones that I see forcing me to leave the state are property taxes and cost of living.  I refuse to buy a house in a state where I get nothing for my tax dollars and the cost of living just increases for no reason.  It's overall a shitty state and there is nothing you can do with a vote to change Trenton or any other office held by a democrat who wants to turn us into serfs.

  9. I have no faith in the case doing anything for anyone else other than the plaintiff.  The case is too narrowly defined for his needs.  In regards to chipping away at NJ gun control polices, the vote is the only thing that will change this but that is also not realistic.  It's not realistic because NJ is a welfare state, those in need will vote the way they need to vote to make sure they can get everything they want for free.  If you want sensible gun rights, move (don't give me that bullshit that I have a family and it's not easy and blah blah blah, you have a choice: Gun rights:No gun rights, you only get to choose one).  Otherwise N.J. is heading for more restrictive gun control policies once Christie is gone.

  11. Vlad, to answer your question on pistol selection, maybe?!?!

I don't want to shoot myself anywhere. And so when I take a step back from the conversation on that notion, you are correct. I generally do not select the pistol purchase based on appendix carry. I already made the decision to mitigate risk on any method of carry by picking hammer fired pistols. It so happens that Im comfortable with appendix carry because of the previous decision. However, my recent purchase came down to an HK P2000LEM or a VP9. Because I do intend on appendix carry the P2000 won the nod. If I had bought the VP9, I indeed would not carry that particular pistol AIWB. So the location of carry played a factor in the decision. BUT other factors were key in the decision process as well.

But back to my original post, I don't think its a lot of people, its a lot of "new" people that concerns me. I mean practically everyone on this forum has more than a casual interest in shooting. Unfortunately I think we are in the minority. So I visualize a sea of new shooters picking things like the VP9 as their first pistol. That is my concern.

    1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

This is the primary rule of gun safety. Never pointing a gun at yourself or others ensures that it will not cause harm if it goes off. When outdoors, point the gun toward the ground or towards the target. If you are indoors, be mindful that a bullet can penetrate ceilings, floors, walls, windows, and doors. Use common sense to dictate the safest direction.

    2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

When holding a gun, rest your finger on the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Do not touch the trigger until you are ready to fire.

    3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.

When you pick up a gun, immediately engage the safety device and remove the magazine before opening the action and checking the chamber(s). If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.
