  1. Surely you're not serious with any of this. We had military police battalions back before they re-organized the Marine Logistics Groups, as another poster pointed out the Army has had Military Police brigades for quite some time as well. When they re-organized the MLGs, they split the MPs up among the Combat Logistics Battalions. However, in the past ten years of counterinsurgency operations, one of the things that has been in woefully short supply overseas is expertise in policing and crime scene analysis. These things are, unfortunately, very necessary when conducting duration counterinsurgency operations. For that very reason, every Marine infantry battalion deploys with a Law Enforcement Professional, usually a retired LEO of some sort who is contracted to provide law enforcement expertise. The Marine Corps is simply trying to institutionalize some of the lessons we've learned, painfully, over the past ten years. They're called Law Enforcement Battalions because they now include much more than just run-of-the-mill Military Police, they've been given additional assets to help in intelligence gathering and analysis. I'm sure all of that sounds ominous to a conspiracy nut, but nothing has changed with respect to employment of the military in domestic law enforcement. It's not even a subject we regularly discuss in our Professional Military Education - we've got way too much crap to worry about overseas. Particularly the Marine Corps, which is usually the expeditionary force of choice for small overseas contingency operations.
  2. The ARX-160 looks interesting. The biggest thing I like is the ease of swapping it from right-handed to left-handed operation. Looks like a nifty way to do it. The bolt release made me a little nervous, looked like his finger was awful close to the trigger when activating that thing. I'd want to shoot it before I say more. Anybody got one to try out?
  3. To be honest, I'm kind of looking forward to it. I've been in NC for too long, and I'd like a change of scenery. From what I hear, the area around Picatinny Arsenal is pretty nice - much more rural than what most of us Southerners think of when we think "New Jersey". I'm looking forward to more time for shooting, fishing, and Crossfit too - I've been in the Operating Forces for the past 10 years, and I'm getting a little tired of deploying away from home.
  4. That I didn't know, but that seems to clinch it for trying to purchase a weapon in another state. Could you form a trust, similar to an NFA trust, list your friend/family in VA as a trustee, and purchase one that way? The firearm would be owned by the trust instead of either you or the friend/relative. Sounds like your safest bet, though, is to have the friend/family purchase the weapon. I think in more permissive states such as Virginia, you only need to worry about illegal transfer with NFA items. Virginia is actually a more permissive environment than NC, especially WRT handgun purchases. Definitely will not be changing my state of residence to NJ while stationed there.
  5. Greetings, I'm moving to the area around Picatinny this summer, coming from Camp Lejeune, NC. I'm an AR-15/M4 afficianado, so I found this place while researching how to make my rifle NJ-legal. The good news is that it looks like all I need to do is pin my VLTOR stock and the rifle should be good to go. The barrel is 14.5" but has a pinned and welded compensator to bring the OAL to 16.1". I'm not entirely thrilled about drilling a hole in my receiver extension, but I guess I'll just have to replace it when I leave. It could be a lot worse. Right now my aim is to get some good glass, preferably an ACOG, and I'll be set. I look forward to participating, and maybe seeing a few of you out on the range.
