  1. Never said that not hung up on it..... I don't think you are reading my post completely just trying to find some chink in the "armor" to debate with. No displaying a firearm in a confrontation is not a good idea to me...your post on precautions basically proves my point that using your brain is your best defense.....I never thought I would have this much back in forth from the solid logic I expressed but hey its a discussion forum so I get it....carry on I feel like a fighter taking on all comers.... :tommy:

  2. AugustWest - If I misinterpreted your initial post I apologize.  But you've got to be kidding with what you just wrote.

Guess bad things don't happen at affluent mall in the middle of the day (Short HIlls). I guess you don't have to worry about walking to your office in midtown NYC and being attacked by a lunatic with hammer.  I guess movie theaters in Aurora, Colorado are perfectly safe.  I guess home invasions don't happen in nice areas of Connecticut.  No one is ever attacked in the morning at Church...those are perfectly safe?  I guess you get the point.  Evil doesn't make an appointment.  You don't get a chance to prepare.  And no, I most definitely do not agree.

Man its tiresome to always have to say there are exceptions.....but that what you offered are..... exceptions....most crime that people normally encounter ....and you and I both know it....isn't the type  the type you just offered up. Normally I get hit with this type of arguments  by people of the Liberal persuasion. They offer up dramatic examples that are far from the norm to try and put you in your place....oh yea....yes there are exceptions.... did I cover that?

  3. "It" and "put off" is something inside your head. There is no "it" with me. Just you flipping out.

Say Que? Are you one of those posters that feel they are so respected they don't have to make any sense...... . Come on you know you patted yourself on the back after that ingenious post didn't you.  I'll ummmm stop "flipping out" now.

  4. AugustWest, I'll give you credit.  To my knowledge, you are the first to offer counter-points to stay in NJ other then the argument of "stand and fight for your home state, together we can make a difference".

I get it , NJ was my home my whole life, and I for over a decade subscribed to the mentality that I will stay and fight, while making the best of the situation as I can. If you are happy and have your reasons for staying, that's OK too.

To apply some of your logic in terms of a defensive situation where you are threatened that you would rather run then fight or use a firearm to defend yourself... I chose the run away option when it comes to NJ. After years of fighting the fight, I decided that running was the better strategy. Also don't get me wrong, I do also agree that sometimes running in a real self defense situation could be the best option depending on the situation even if you are armed. In fact, tactically retreating while using a firearm to further assure your withdrawal is even better. :)

Point taken with your analogy of running....nice post.... the best posts are the ones that get you to think...good work

  5. Welcome to the Forums!

I have also lived in different areas of the country (Kansas and Texas).  Neither have the oppressive taxes and overreaching government that NJ has.

I'm not saying NJ is awful by any means.  There are many things that I actually enjoy here.  But there are many things that I find completely incomprehensible about this state.

One is the crushing tax system.  I think I'm safe in saying the taxes on an average home (3-4 bedroom, 2-2.5 bath, small yard in a working class/lower middleclass) are in the range of $7 -$10k.  I'm not talking a McMansion here.  Cape cod, bi-level, small colonial style, etc.  I have relatives in Missouri, Texas, South Carolina, etc that pay substantially less.  In some cases a tenth of the amount.  My parents, born and raised in NJ, retired to Franklin, NC.  My father was complaining that their taxes had just gone up.  To $800.  For the year.  I have many friends who live in Texas just outside of areas like Dallas and Austin.  If they pay $2500 a year in property taxes it's a lot.  Are the services we receive here in NJ THAT much better than those areas?  I don't think so.

Another is the fact that legal firearm owners here are treated as criminals in waiting.  If we deviate on the way to or from the gun range or gun store/gun smith we could be looking at 3-4 years in prison and be stripped of several rights.  Firearm owners in NJ are under constant attack under the guise of "sensible" laws which in reality make no sense.

Additionally, by  your comments you seem to be under the belief that you have to fire your weapon to defend yourself.  Many times  legal firearm owners have to do nothing more than simply present their weapon to stop a threat.  They don't fire a single shot.

If you would rather "run" (risking being overtaken by a possibly faster, stronger and armed aggressor) or "kick in the crouch" (you may miss and now are able to be easily grabbed / struck by a larger, stronger and possible armed aggressor).  You can defend yourself how you see fit.  I would rather I, or my wife or daughters, be able to display a gun from a safe distance and give the aggressor the chance to retreat.

Your responses in NJ are both perfectly legal.  I'm not sure about the mace though.  That may get YOU arrested.  You'll probably wind up dead or a victim but at least you won't be arrested by the state for defending yourself.  The method I would like to have available would more than likely result in me and my loved ones being safe and a fleeing criminal who, if they have two brain cells, will also still be very much alive.

If you aren't comfortable carrying a firearm for the purpose of defending yourself that's fine.  i get it.  Some people aren't comfortable drinking alcohol or driving motorcycles either.  But you are a new member to this forum/community.  You have 4 posts.  You voluntarily joined a pro-2nd Amendment forum and one of your very first posts seems to scream "I'm not comfortable carrying a gun and nobody else should either!"  Maybe the longer residents of this community are misreading your statements?  Maybe you came across in an unintended fashion?  Maybe your a supporter of "sensible gun laws" and came in here to just stir the pot.  Only time will tell.

Hopefully your not that latter.  If not, I look forward to possible seeing you at some shot gun shoot outs (clay shoots), the range or the Recall Sweeney Rally as we fight, together, to make NJ a better and freer place to live for all.

The best way to keep you and your family outside the home is with your brain and choices you make....most of the time "bad" things happen in "bad" areas at bewitching hours...I know there are exceptions but you get it.  People that are victims of crime outside the home often have made unfortunate choices as to were they were at and what time of day they were there.

Fair? of course not....is there random crime? of course but these are usually criminals wanting to take something from you.....Not someone running up to you to assault your family and run off with your wife and daughter...I mean for the most part you can agree right?

If someone holds you up are you gonna give up your twenty dollar bill or draw a gun I mean really think about it. I would actually like to have the ability to carry but as I said countless times only draw a firearm when all hope is lost such as someone running off with your family.

Am I uncomfortable carrying a firearm no because I have my head straight about this serious subject.  Again think of the aftermath of a shooting and how much is out of your hands ....scary stuff.

If you read my post I said I feel using a firearm is the worst form of self defense because afterwards you will be defending your self for years against lawyers and courts.  I would use a gun only after every other option is exhausted such as running, kicking in the crotch, mace (mace is sold at hardware stores so im thinking its legal but ill look into it) just like I said...To hell with being Macho I need to be here for my family and shooting someone is a bad way of doing that.

In my home if I can get my family out of course I will this isn't some movie.....but If I cant God help you.

Read my post from the start I didn't misrepresent myself you misread or took liberties with very clear points..... but points different then your own and I guess the forum which did strike a nerve ( I know I know arrogant term). This is big boy stuff again not a movie...I am not saying anyone in here would be careless with a firearm but some responses I get....I dunno maybe it just me.

Also one last point I do not believe in carrying a firearm, hoping the sight will scare someone off....If I make the very serious determination to draw a gun its because im ready to use it.

Its not me screaming at you.... its my words....they are screaming at you for a reason.....otherwise you would of laughed and moved on...right?

  6. You don't have to apologize about anything. I'm not the arbiter of right and wrong around here so JMHO. If you are going to give it, be prepared to take it.

And, yeah, there shouldn't be aggravation over where to live. It's not like it's Eagles vs. Cowboys :)

What did I "give" lol I mean seriously. And my mistake but to me it did seem that you came off as some kinda arbiter. Was it me or were you a little put off that I had a different opinion then the majority. I  get it..... its being part of the big herd saying NJ sux......... I mean it may be at least a little bit part of the problem but nah nevermind

  7. I'll be sad one day when I read about you in the papers. Want to compare penis sizes? Seems this is the response your attempting to get out of me.... I figured I would pander to your desire.

wow how do you respond to such a post. I wonder if anyone else thought that's what I was going for. Damn I just wanted to join in, you guys always so unfriendly to the new guy? Or am I a special case. Beeee nice .

  8. I see a touched /nerve as clear as I see my mailbox :D

Wait I was just told that term was arrogant? Again i'm just a new fella trying to throw my 2 cents in. Peace brothers I meant no harm. I understand some people are prone to let little things get under their skin I just forget it sometime. I agree jersey sux can we be friends?

  9. I believe "thin skinned," "utopia," and "touched a nerve" came before it was mentioned you might have some arrogance about you.

You came in here and expressed an opinion and then started insulting people that disagreed with you and mocking their responses as if it was proof of your opinion. That is arrogance.

sorry I used such harsh insulting language I'll definitely tone it down a little thanks for the advice.

  10. Brainwashed into thinking that the NJ way of thinking about fending off an attacker would be to "run and hide" instead of "standing your ground". And that's ok, acting like a man isn't for everyone. As well as thinking that our school's are great here compared to other states. Or that staying here to make more money is worth giving up constitutionally withheld rights that NJ imposes on its citizens. The more you make here the more they take anyway, it's not like you actually wind up with a larger bank account in the end. I personally prefer to protest by leaving cutting off my funding to the corrupt leaders of this state, that see me as a piggy bank, and nothing more. This is just where you and I differ on opinions. But again I'm perfectly ok with that, and I would still break bread or have a beer with you.

You definitely seem manly I agree no doubt about that, as you said being manly just must be the way you roll as for us others hell I'll run before I shoot any day I know I know you are shaking your head in disgust but hell being manly isn't for everyone.

  11. No nerve struck with me. Just stating the obvious, you've been brainwashed. I don't hold anything against you for your views or opinions, you're entitled to them. I'm not a Democrat, so I wouldn't try to tell you that you're wrong. What you believe is right for you.

and I quote "obvious you have been brainwashed" opps my bad? care to elaborate? or....

  12.

You are really over-simplifying here. I feel there are a myriad of reasons for the flight out of NJ. BTW its not just gun owners either. NJ leads the country in people moving out.

    Personally for me :

    • Better weather
    • Lower taxes
    • Twice the house both in size and amenities for what I'm selling mine for here, and its brand new
    • Gorgeous neighborhood and area compared to what I can afford here in NJ
    • Highly rated schools, which are only a few years old with all of the high tech amenities. School infrastructure investment continues and actually makes the schools better instead of a bottomless money pit like it is here in NJ. I'd have to move to an area in NJ with $15-20K property taxes to approach the schools where I'm moving to where I'll pay $4.5K.
    • Easier and less expensive commute to work.
    • Charlotte's downtown area is really nice like a park with big buildings compared to the cesspool that is NYC. (I get some people like NYC, more power to them but its not for me)
    • 2.5 hours to the mountains, 3.5 hours to Myrtle beach.
    • Political environment more aligned with my views
    • And of course gun rights and living in a free state. This includes simple things like having an adjustable stock on my AR and standard capacity mags. Will I get a CCW, yes. Will I carry everywhere I go, most likely not. Having the option is all that matters. You make it sound like as soon as you CCW you are now going to 100% going to get into a gunfight and it will ruin your life. I don't even know where to begin with that one.

Did not mean to oversimplify but I just went with the reasons I see most people are leaving NJ  on this forum.  I'm also not challenging anyones decision to leave I left myself for place I thought with all my heart was better. One of my problems with NJ is its to crowded so I guess I applaud your move.

But for the sake of discussion i'll reply to some points best I can.

Better weather:    Umm kinda agree but I personally like the weather out West. Humidity is a bitch

Lower taxes:   that can't really be discussed totally accurate

Able to afford more house: Come down South Jersey getting downright cheap here

Better schools:  I don't know the specific school system you are speaking of but being that I have family in SC, TN, and FLA I here the schools are a mess in the south and have a  very hard time attracting quality teachers.

Politics: Political enviorment is changing rapidly in places like VA and NC mostly because of migration of people from the northeast and immigration from south of the border.

CCW:  I think you can admit that you took liberties in rephrasing my statement.  100% gunfight? I just stated I feel using a firearm is the worst form of self defense and is only an answer for me in a hopeless situation and as I look at it with open unemotional eyes yes it can certainly ruin your life because so much is completely out of your hands in the aftermath.

I don't know where you are moving down south but if its SC enjoy the shrimp and grits I know I do.

  13. I am assuming most people on this forum want to leave the Garden State due to two reasons, taxes and the ability to conceal and carry.

While I have many gripes about NJ and have left for California for a time and came very close to moving to South Carolina I'd like to share my perspective on the topic.

Property taxes are high in NJ and while researching our move to SC to be close to family, we found out that we would pay about $5,000 less a year down south.  We also found out my wife would make $22,000 less a year with comparable experience. Those numbers spoke loudly to us.

Also the comparing the crime statistics NJ actually ranks very well while SC has disturbingly high rates in just about every catergory as do many southern and south western states.

As for conceal and carry we should without a doubt be able to obtain a license which we all know most of us can't.  But at the same time I feel using a firearm is by far the least favorable method of self defense.

It without a doubt will change your life forever whether you are in a "free" state or in NJ or CA.  You under extreme stress must make every decision perfectly as well as shoot perfectly or end up in jail or being sued and losing everything.

Even if you do everything perfectly you are at the mercy of courts and lawyers which is very frightening.

My method even if I could carry would be to run, use mace, kick in the crouch, etc.  and only in the complete loss of hope would I ever think of drawing a firearm.

All this being said my answer would be "no" to leaving this state for these two reasons.  Everywhere has it problems without a doubt and I see myself leaving someday but the choice is complicated and I am sure I will have gripes about the new place I end up.

  14. I own a gen 4 g19....from the directions, tips, and videos everyone posted it does seem pretty cut and dry how to install the sights.

Being a new shooter correctly aligning the sights seems like something may have a little trouble with. One poster mentioned marking with tape where the old sight was for a reference point, this makes sense to me and if its that easy then it should be no problem.

On the other hand I saw a video where the person in it kept mentioning "zeroing" without telling exactly what it means which seems a little more complicated.

I will probably give it a go just hate for something happen to a firearm that was such a long drawn out process to get in the first place.

  15. Get Dawson Precision's fiber optic front and rear. They come with the punches. If you can clean your gun you can install your own sights.

I'll trust you that they are easy to install but the last "easy" thing I installed were slip on exhaust pipes for a motorcycle that were promised to "slip on" and "slip off" ...turns out they did neither.

After about three hours and 8 skinned knuckles I made the promise to myself I make after almost every do it yourself project, "next time I'm paying someone that knows what they are @#&*! they are doing.

All that being said and this is a legit question, since sights are for aiming isn't there some amount of precision in setting up the sights or do they snap in in the perfect spot everytime?  Also with the Dawson's which model do you suggest or have experience with?

  16. Hello everyone I was wondering if any Glock owners could give me advice for the following:

Due to eye strain I want to get larger sights for my Glock handgun , can you recommend any that have worked well for you.

Also I am in South jersey and would need someone to install the sights, is this something a typical gun shop can do or is there anyone specific you can recommend.

    Thank you for any advice.

  17. Thank you for the suggestions. After checking the websites of the shops mentioned I have a list of places I am going to check out. I am no expert but I feel the place closest to me which is Zues is overpriced but I still want to support a shop that is somewhat local.

  18. I am in Atlantic County and purchased in the past from Lawmen supply in Pennsauken. I heard they no longer sell to the general public so I am looking for another shop for ammo and firearms within an hour drive. Anyone had good experiences or recommendations for a  place to go?
