I was wondering if I were making a mistake by buying something without actually using it

Potentially. You can always go to the store, handle it and ASK if it's ok to dry fire it once or twice. Some may let you, others may not. Some may load it with snap caps, others won't care. Go to several different places and give them a spin.

Just realize, while there are no bad guns, some just won't fit you right, won't feel right, you won't shoot right, the trigger is just not quite there for you.

Nothing replaces having shot it before. If it was easy in NJ to buy and sell guns, I would say to go in blindly. But in NJ, I would recommend to proceed with some caution and do the most you can to assure you'll end up with something you are happy with.

Barring that, we have a swap and sell section here. There's an abundance of members  that would be happy to relieve of your "mistake"; for a deep discount, of course.

Wow... good to know, thank you... even if I have my FID??

    It may vary by range

RTSP  allows you to rent alone if you have the FPID.

Gun for hire does too but you must bring your own firearm as well.

I'm trying to find out what is legally required of my to keep one of my guns in my new Jersey home for self defense.

As long as you can show proof of residency per the NJSP guidelines, there's nothing you are legally required to do.

It's only when you want to purchase firearms and handgun caliber ammo that questions #s 2, & 19 for the NJSP apply. Question #9 in an unicorn and will remain so for ever.

    ...and there’s still no gaurentee

There will never be any guarantees. But if if your town give you the indication that a letter from a health care professional can clear this situation, is it not worth the effort and money?

my town seems to think it’s not a big deal.. she’s like oh just have a medical doctor sign off saying your medically fit to posses a firearm... easier said than done. :(

Can I apply for the permits at the gun store or do I need to previously apply with the PD and bring it with me to the gun store?

If there was one single change the NJ legislature could make to benefit the NJ gun owners that would have zero impact on crime rates and wouldn't increase the number of guns on the wrong hands, it would be to eliminate the permit scheme as it exists today.

The permit process could easily be done at the gun store. It makes no sense that you just passed a criminal background check in order to get your permits, walk down Main Street to the gun store and have to pass a second background check when making a purchase.

But keeping it as is fulfills the goals of the legislature which is dissuade law abiding citizens from owning firearms.

  6. Welcome to the nut house. We are here to enable you.

Regarding gun suggestions. Every major manufacturer makes reliable firearms; the best gun out there is the one you shot the best, the one that fits your hand the best and the one you feel the most comfortable with. That's where range time plays an important part. I suggest going to places that rent  firearms; go try different brands, models and calibers so when you are ready to buy, you buy exactly what you want. It's going to be expensive, though.

Don't get too hanged up on brands - but just so you know, if you don't buy a CZ, you are making a lifetime mistake-- or calibers. Buy what feels right.

Also, with your FPID you can buy as many rifles and shotguns as your heart desires. You don't need a permit for each. Do you need fill out a certificate of eligibility, the atf form 4473 and pass the back ground check (NICS). But that's all done at the gun store; no need to go back to the police department.

That opens another world of possibilities.

And to throw a bone to pizza bob, revolvers are cool too and that are a lot of fun to shoot.

  7. What's this stay at home order you speak of?

My life only changed as much as external factors forced me to.  Within the confines of the law, I continued working, shopping and going out for entertaining.

I do miss already the days where the speed limit  was less than  suggestion and all the troopers were parked on the side of the road watching the traffic going by at 80++.

This isn’t the work of a casual amateur; Henderson has an Energy Resources Engineering degree from Stanford University, a Master’s degree in Sustainability in the Urban Environment, and years of experience working in sustainable agriculture. His Instagram shows him hard at work on various construction and gardening projects, and he’s done community development at organic farms around the world.

For Marcus, this was a perfect opportunity to put his experience to work for a cause.

Ah, but that's not really a garden intended to produce actual crops. It's just performance art.

I'm aware you can get one permit per month, so if I wanted to get 12 permits per year, I have to bother my references 12 times in one year?

No, you can only use one permit each 30 days. (one gun per month). You can apply for as many permits as you wish each time. The law does not limit the number of permits you can apply each time. You can apply for 100 permits if you want. The PD may not let you, but there isn't anything in the law that prevents you from doing so.

However, since each permit is valid for 90 days, folks tend to apply for 3 permits each time. If your town is good with extending permits (extending expiration date beyond the 90 days is done solely at the discretion of the chief of police), you can apply for and use 6 permits in a period of 6 months.

It would work as following (get a calendar to get accurate dates)

    Get six permits in Jan

Use 1 in Jan, 1 in Feb, 1 in March. Get the other 3 extended. Use 1 in April, 1 in May, 1 in June. This is a rough idea how it works. Just make sure you space them 30 days apart.

You would only have to bother your friends twice a year and get 12 permits/year. Your friends would never known how many permits you are applying each time, either.

So I went to complete the form to get a second handgun permit and it's asking me again for the same information including providing two references

That's correct. Each time you apply for permits you have to supply the same information.

  10. It's a scam.

You will get a fraudulent check for way over your asking price. Then you'll get an " oh gosh darn it, I made a mistake getting that cashiers check. But I'll tell you what, if you send me the difference, you can keep an extra few hundred for your trouble".

You being the trusting guy you are, deposits that check on your account  and  sends the scammer a legit check/ money order/ iTunes card/ target card, whatever he asks for.

A few days latter your bank notifies you the check was no bueno and is reversing the deposit.

And that's how you just got scammed. There's nothing you can do, there's nothing the bank can do, either.

"Cash means cash and the exchange will done in the parking lot of the local police department " use that reply and you'll hear the rats scatter away.

    I hate scammers

  11. Yes, sir. I only carry one bag to the range.

Don't over think this. That bag Is fine to carry it all and fully complies with the law. If you want to carry the ammo in a separate box or bag like many do, nobody is going to make fun of you, either.

And another thing, it's perfectly  legal to transport your magazines loaded, as well. Just do not insert them into the firearm; keep them in a separate pocket.
