  1. I picked up my permits at the local PD yesterday, 6 moths to the day from application.
  2. Are the renting any guns yet?
  3. Hi All and Thanks….. For the record, I have not been denied my permits, I was asked to explain a few things and I have done so in writing. I fully expect to get my FID and my question was more of a buy now with wife’s FID or buy later with mine. The clear answer is let her buy her pistol now and wait to get the long guns I want once my FID is approved. Of course, how could we not “borrow” long guns? We share everything and we can’t both purchase the same gun….odd laws as usual in NJ. I guess we need his and hers gun safes and duplication of all firearms…..just in case The likelihood that she will ever shoot the long guns without me is slim to none, so I should be the one to buy those. Kevin
  4. My understanding was that the FID was for purchase only, if the guns are legally acquired owned which they will be that I can use them whether I have an FID or not. Maybe I am wrong, and I think the pistol is another issue, but i dont see the problem with the long guns. Kevin
  5. My wife got her letter Friday 5/3 that she can pick up her permits in West Caldwell last name M. I am still waiting.....but that is another story. Kevin
  6. Hi All, If you have been following the "taking action in Essex county" thread you know what we (in Essex county) have been dealing with.... So last week I get a call from the very nice detective that my wife and I submitted our applications to and he says in effect my wife can come get her FID and P2P, but I need to write a letter explaining a few things on my driving abstract. No big surprise there (for me anyway) and I have submitted the requested letter and I really don’t want to get into a debate about if he can legally ask and if I should give them a letter or not. I think I will have my FID and P2P this week or next……but just in case not: I am assuming if she buys her pistol a rifle and a shotgun I can legally take the long guns to/from, and use them at the range, correct? The pistol I am not so sure about, maybe I can maybe not, can anyone clarify? I am sort of looking at the worst case scenario, if it takes longer than I think to get my permits. Thanks Kevin
  7. Went to West Caldwell records this morning, was told that they have "tons" in process and that although she had not seen my permits yet it will hopefully be "next week". I am now know as "the guy looking for his gun permits" Hope they have some guns left by the time I get them! Kevin
  8. Hi All, Went on the tour yesterday and was very, very impressed. This is the type of facility that you can take friends, family and business associates to. The location is key and the demographic in the area will appreciate the convenience, safety and service of the staff. I own a business in Little Falls grew up in Cedar Grove and live in West Caldwell and this range fills a huge need in the community and elevates the whole notion of shooting as a sport/hobby/pastime. Obviously, lots of time, energy and money have been invested. I personally like the idea of membership and would hope that after the initial hoopla dies down there is sufficient support to make it a private club/range, or limit walk ins to certain times/days. My wife and I have taken lessons with Rob from GFH and can only say that having GFH staff and classes at this location is HUGE. I think the atmosphere will be pleasant, professional and relaxed. I don’t expect there to be ANY attitude at this range and that is a big plus. See you there… Kevin
  9. BH is very loud and small, in ear and outer ear protection would be good, I will sum up my experience with that range as "unpleasant", not a great experience for first time indoor especially with GF but it gets the job done…..it will be nice this weekend pack a picnic and go shoot outdoors. Kevin
  10. Hi All, Being an optimist I often look for the good in certain situations that, on the surface, are negative and frustrating. This is not a thread to complain about delays and gun control…..we have plenty of those. As a first time applicant for my FID card in Essex County the irony of everything that is going on with permit delays and gun control in general cannot be overstated….here is my perspective: Hurricane Sandy (the same storm that effectively shut down 2a rights in Essex County) finally compelled me, along with my wife, to get serious about our FID cards, firearms training, skills and ownership. Having been around and using rifles and shot guns as a kid and using an air gun almost daily as a youth (in my backyard and woods in Essex County no less) I was no stranger to the whole notion of gun ownership. However, what I and others have gone through in NJ has certainly opened my eyes to the reality of political agendas and how they will impact my family. The reality is that growing up in NJ gun ownership was not on my radar and certainly not viewed as a “right”. How could it be if permits and background checks were needed? This was a privilege for the people that “needed” firearms….in my mind anyway. I think this is the real agenda at play; “they” don’t want us to have guns for whatever reason so they take a right and make it a privilege and hope we forget about it. Ultimately all of these delays have sparked MANY conversations with gun and non-gun owners in my town; at school, birthday parties, etc. This is making MANY more people aware of their 2nd amendment rights and exercising/protecting those rights. I have met lots of gun owners and gun owners to be, who are/will be acquiring “collections” of firearms and are now deeply committed to preserving our 2a rights. I strongly feel that at the end of the day the more they push for control, the more “regular” people wake up and take notice. At least me, my wife and our children will understand and exercise our 2a rights. Thanks for your time and see you at the range. Kevin
  11. I tried west caldwell PD records and they are closed for holiday, last call I had with detective about the whole deal was that as soon as they got records back from county they would finish all ASAP, apps are just just waiting on metal health check. The lady in records is nice an I am sure she will tell me if ANY have come back yet and gone out. I iwll call again on monday..... Happy Easter!
  12. Can anyone confirm the physical location of the office that processes the metal health checks? I was told (from people in the know) that the office that flooded was IN Belleville…..of course I am assuming that the same location that flooded would still be used but maybe not. I would think Belleville PD or Anthony or somebody must know. Maybe I am naive, but could one not just walk into the office and speak with Nancy or Frank face to face and ask to see the records. I mean this is still the United States, and not to be dramatic, but an attorney could also provide a letter citing the 30 day rule in NJ statutes just to give a little back up when meeting with them. Thoughts? Kevin
  13. I would call again, but that seems to not be the best approach.... What is the location of the office? I know it is in Belleville, anybody have the address and hours of operation? I will go down this week if I can get a location. Also, who is responsible for the operation of this office? It is time to start calling and/or have an attorney call the person directly responsible for the office and records. Please post here or PM me with this info if you have it. Kevin
  14. Hi Guys, My thinking was not trying to cut the line as much as it was getting a few dozen or a few hundred people together with legal representation to use the proper channels to compel the county into accelerating restoration of the system and potentially adding resources to clean up the back log a.s.a.p. There are attorneys, politicians and lobbyists that do this type of work day in and day out. They know the system and the players. I would surmise that this delay is very much about resources and priorities and certainly the current political climate as it related to firearms. I do not think that this means that we could not get an accelerated action plan, but it would need to be done using the proper channels and “working the system” so to speak. There is a mental health and public safety issue here to potentially leverage to our cause, having the system operational makes us all safer or at least provides information required by law. Kevin
  15. Hi All, First post…. My wife and I have applications for FID and P2P in with the West Caldwell PD on 11/30/12. The Det. at the PD was really nice and my reference letters went out that week and everything is processed except the mental health check from the county. The PD has actually been very helpful and the Det. I spoke with today said he has a few dozen applications pending and has not any mental health records returned from the county since Nov. He said that the other Detectives are in the same boat…..everything processed and waiting for MH records from the county. So I called the county and the nice lady said they are in the process of getting the system “fixed” and the system should be back up “soon”. I asked if it will be a paper system or computer and she said "paper". She also said that they have a backlog of "about 1000" requests. At this point it is a waiting game I suppose. I would be more than happy to pay an attorney to look into the timeframe for the system to be back up and running, and also prioritize my records search if possible. I highly doubt a lawsuit would compel anyone to do much. I think once the system is back up the delays will continue but a lawsuit would be pointless. If anyone would like to recommend an attorney that specializes in these types of issues I would contact them and see if there is a way to get a “priority” list going once the system is back on-line. I would also have to think that the system is working in a limited capacity at this time but “regular” applications are in the pile waiting. Kevin
