I think if they filed their own 1040 from a part time job, they should:

...." The package provides one-time direct payments to Americans of $1,200 per individual adult and $2,400 for married couples, plus an additional $500 for each eligible child.

I read that as "per individual adult", so if they have their own S.S number, and file a separate 1040 in 2018 or 2019, I believe they should be eligible.

That would be good.  If that’s the case, at least I will know a little piece of that money we pay the feds each year is coming back.  In theory anyway.  Thanks.

  2. If a company decides it will furlough employees, some of those employees will volunteer to be laid off since they will, for a period of time, make more money and not have to go to work.  Their gamble is will the furlough outlast the extra $600.  I don’t know how long thT cash will be there as a supplement.

As far as increasing unemployment, we can’t furlough ourselves.  The company controls that.  Will they be more willing to do it knowing it won’t hurt the employee? Maybe.  But I think they are going to look at the bottom line and act to preserve the company and whatever staff they can hang on to.

  3. Anyone know if adult children  (21+) who live at home but filed returns are eligible?

And before the wisecracks start.....they are both in college but work part of the year.

Seems if you have a child in college, you and your child get nothing?  No extra $500 credit for you, and no $1200 for the child even if they filed their own return with the claim box checked.

Didn’t see this.  They are ..or can be.. working adults.  Doesn’t seem right...although alot of this stuff isn’t “right”.

  4. Sure.

I’m not so concerned about a temporary relaxing of action taken by cops for certain things.  I think most of the local PDs have been doing this long enough to know what matters more and what matters less.  Not all of them will get that right.  There are dips*&t Chiefs of Police just as there are dipshit welders.  Hopefully they will keep themselves healthier and get back to normal soon.  It could be equally bad or worse...if half of them got sick and went on leave.  Freehold Twp has at least 3 on quarantine and I believe at least one member of the county swat team is somehow affected by way of contact.

  5. Your internet service must suck if you are that worried about it going out during that once in a decade break in into your house.

I’d rather call the cops while they are there than expect some local detective to find someone from a bad camera angle that the detective really isn’t interested in finding.

  6. Well, for one,  both hosted and home DVRs will rely on your internet connection for notification and remote access.  Yes.. the DVR will continue to document activity and you can watch it while at home. Valid reasons for having security system, but not the only reasons.

There are arguments for both options. I prefer not to have equipment in my closet that I have to deal with.  -that- equipment is less reliable than an enterprise class platform in multiple data centers.

Which shows how you don't realize how often it truly drops out. It drops a heck of a lot more frequent. I see it all the time.

Says the guy who probably has limited experience with the devices, or believes the sales pitch by Ring. You do know that hard drives have been in computers and other devices for multiple decades, right? I don't remember anyone who has ever had a hard drive failure.

I know exactly how much it drops.  I do this for a living.  Not a hobby.  I actually monitor both of my providers.

    limited experience...

I’ve been building and managing complex systems for 35 years.

Drives fail all the time.  We had an NVMe drive fail Tuesday.  About a dozen ssds fail in the past 6 months.

That’s fine.  This is a pointless discussion.

    Kinda....

Your reliance on the 'cloud' and other for your surveillance footage is not the best  methodology

    There is no ‘cloud’.

The equipment providing hosted services is far more reliable that anything you put on a shelf in your closet.   This isn’t an opinion. Its a fact.   And the argument.... “so what if your internet goes down”.... isn’t valid.

For home dvr’s... you don’t care what it sees when you’re away?  How does that alert you to activity? Does your dog start a Twilight Bark?

I’ll let Alphabet, Microsoft and The various data center providers that they got it all wrong. They just need a PC at Sniper’s house and they’re good....

So, you never have WiFi drop outs from your router or modem in your house, and Comcast, Verizon or Optimum (who ever you have) never has outages or goes down in your area?

    Really?

Brief interruptions a few times during the course of a year vs the device failing.  And anecdotal.. “my device has been running for years” ..is just that. Anecdotal.

    Nope totally incorrect....

    Ah...  no.

    Really?

WiFi recorded video data hosted on some unknown cloud server, controlled by some unknown person/company is more reliable? Wow, you really do believe their advertising.

    Says who, Ring and Blink?

Yes there are downsides, the wireless cloud systems have more downsides. Just remember,  if you don't hold it (the data), you don't own it.... Just like gold and silver.

If you're looking for a novelty video doorbell, Ring is your winner. If you want a REAL security system, protecting your complete house and property, hardwired with onsite storage, is the way to go.

Uh. Yes.  You have their staff and redundant systems in their top tier data centers with multiple 10 gb ISP connections in your house?

    Yeah.  Really.

What's your and your wife's personal safety worth?

I would ask you the same question.  Hosted video is more reliable than what you have.   There are downsides to each type of system, but on prem DVRs are less reliable.

    Your question is irrelevant.

I guess me and wifey are getting nothing, as ussual. And we owe 5k in taxes too with a tax withholding of zero taxable deductions.

    1 hour ago, JackDaWack said:

It's a withholdings issue. I still cant figure out why they aren't taking enough out for either of us. I never owed the government a dime, in fact i always got a substantial amount of money back each year until Trump changed it up.

If I punched the numbers I'd probably say I owe slightly more now then i would have under the old system.

This happens when the incomes of each spouse are very different.   One Married Zero for someone making 175k is not the same as someone making 55k.  One person has to withhold more during the year or you’ll be paying.

But wait, I need to watch the dog when I'm at work... :mutley:

What are you waiting for, a break in?  My perimeter is completely covered by multiple cameras.

Bigger pain is the ass to do.  Have bigger fish to fry in short term.

The dog does not want you watching him. And you work from home.

Interesting, everyone stopped talking about supply line disruptions from China, instead they're counting new Covid cases and shutdowns.

Guess what, those ship loads of containers are still NOT coming from China, and big parts of China are still shut down. You know all that stuff that was hoarded and cleaned out of the stores? There's no raw materials or finished products to restock them with.

Maybe companies here will wake up.

Frankly, I hope the commercial flight ban to and from China is NEVER lifted.  Pipe dream?   ......sure.   But no one in America ever needs to be in China.  Ever.

Breaking our dependency on China...is like America Prepping.
