  1. Putting in permits next week. We'll see how long it is in my town (Manalapan).

     

    Saw a bunch of good info here on the subject of choosing a first pistol...or a few first pistols... :-)

     

    So far it looks like my first two might be a Beretta M9A1 and an H&K VP9.

     

    I haven't shot either yet. But I've handled the M9 and it's variants a few times. Like how it feels. I've not handled or shot the VP9 but I'm doing an NRA Basic Pistol course in a few weeks and will rent the Beretta and a P30 if I can do that during the live fire portion of the course. Try em out is good advice from these forums. So is the taking the course. I'll do both.

     

    Friend of mine has a VP9. Raves about it. His opinion and the posts here convinced me it's worth trying. I'll head to a range with him if we both have time.

     

    Not sure where I am on hammer vs striker. Guess I'll find out.

     

    If anyone has any opinion on these two choices or anything else worth checking out as first pistol, it's much appreciated.

     

    Budget is about $800 per. Less is better. But I'd rather spend more for something I like than spend less for something that I sorta like.

     

    Caliber is likely 9mm or similar. Not looking to beat myself up with a .40 S&W. From what I read recoil is noticibly more.

     

    Anyway, will post pics of both when I actually recieve whatever I end up with.


  2. Back to the actually meat of the OPs post.

     

    This law is the perfect revenge tool for a pissed off spouse. Or neighbor that has it in for you.  They report fighting, etc... you are screwed.  There's no recourse.  It's she said.. he said....... "he" always loses.

     

    Which gets back to Due Process and why it's part of our Constitution.  The 14th Ammdt??  Whichever it is... this law blatently violates it.  Unbelievable that this stands.

     


  3. this state is hopeless, the only hope we have to freedom is to move, the courts are just going to get more creative each time to disqualify as many people as possible, then carrying will be the least of our worries because only 1% of us will even be able to legally own a gun, and that gun will be a fingerprint reading .22 with a maximum capacity of 5 rounds 

     

    They would very much like to limit us to simulated firearms that shoot nothing but a laser at a laser sensing target.  That's on their agenda.  Count on it.  The unwashed masses have no need for real firearms according Ms. Loretta.


  4. Concur on first doing the warm up.... then stretching.  Been doing that for as along as I can remember.

     

    I've been racing masters track until about 5 years ago.  Had a meniscus issue and had to stop. Hoping to get back to it soon. Hate being out of shape. Am 52 at the moment.  Switched from racing on a 400m track to racing motocross.  You'd be surprised how many "old guys" race.  Both moto and track.  Right now I'm struggling to get back in to shape. A lot of crap going on that makes it tough to have any time.

     

    From my own experience and from what others more knowledgeable and experienced people have told me, flexibility is a key factor in being able to do the things you want to do in terms of fitness.  If you're tight, and you keep working out, even light workouts... like 2 or 3 mile runs.... you'll probably end up with some sort of injury.  Iliotibial band syndrome, shin splints, runners knee (pain above or behind your knee cap) or plantar fasciitis.  I've had three of those four.  They all sucked.

     

    It's definitely important to warm up.. THEN stretch.  You're body won't move correctly if it's tight.  Then you start to have problems.

     

    And build up slowly. Another way to get hurt, or get discouraged is going out to run 5 miles your first day with people who run all the time.  Only thing that sucks more is doing it again on day 2.

     

    If you run, try to get a good pair of the right type of shoes.  Has a lot to do with your arches and how your foot rolls as you contact the ground.  And to some extent, your weight.  There's three types with variations of each.  Motion Control, Stability and Performance. Some places have different names for Performance shoes... ie mininalist, etc.  most people over 35 wear one of the first two.  It's best to get some advice.  A running shoe store would be a good start.  I've been to Runner's High in Freehold.  The owner Mike Mooney is a great runner and very nice guy.  Knows what he's talking about.  But there are probably good places to go all over the state.  RoadRunnerSports.com is a decent place to check out running shoes.  Pretty good return policy.

     

    You don't have to run to get into a better state of fitness.  For someone with knee issues, a stationary bike is probably a better choice. Or at least a treadmill instead of the roads.  And avoid concrete sidewalks.  Unless you like pain.

     

    If I'm on a stationary bike or a treadmill, I have to watch something that motivates me.  For me that's motocross videos mainly.  Usually good music tracks and it passes the time more quickly.  I've also used some of those road bike training DVDs.  Hate the music, but it's better than looking at a wall.  Found out later that the music (sucky techno stuff) is there to set a cadence. Anyway, I find watching something helps.

     

    A lot of times, people have good intentions about getting more fit, losing weight, etc.  but life gets in the way.  What helps is if you have a commitment to some event that you're training for.  A 5K road race, one of the Spartan things... a 10K walk event.  Bike ride.  1 mile fun run.........  whatever.  Something that goes on the calendar that you commit to will make it more likely that you stay on your program.   You don't have to train to qualify for the olympics...  Just something that you'll want to do what will keep you working out.

     

    Walking a dog works too like I think Vlad said above.  He'll annoy the crap out of you until you get off your ass.  I mean the dog will annoy. Not sure Vlad will.

     

    One more thing though.  I spent some time doing the P90X workout.  Was tired of trying to come up with workouts on my own.  Figured it was easier to have a workout plan set that I could just use.  P90X is tough to do, even when you cut the workouts short.  I don't recommend it for anyone coming off a 5 year stint on the couch.  But one of the things the guy who made P90X said was a big reason he could do all of that stuff at his age, was his flexibility. And what he does for flexibility is yoga.   I'm not a yoga person but I've done.. or rather tried to do.. the P90X yoga workouts.  Had a tough time finishing them.  One was 1hr 14 min long.  I was pretty damned surprised it was as tough as it was.  But, it does keep you flexible.  I avoid anything where I'm upside down.  Hurts my head.

     

    Being in shape beats being out of shape.  Find a way to do something that you can do every day.  Mix it if up you have to.  Instead of weights, split some wood if you can.  Most things like that are better than doing nothing.

     

    There's a ton of stuff to talk about when it comes to fitness. If i have anything useful, I'll post more info.


  5. My advice would be to shoot at a steel plate or one of Old Bridge's indoor USPSA matches.

     

    In both events you've be supervised in the making ready, draw and clearing process of the firearm, and believe it or not, a lot of DQ's occur at this stage, so it's an important part to learn and learn correctly.  Shooting steel is nice because you get used to the aspect of being "run" (supervised) which many aren't used to as well as shooting in a reactive environment (bang....TING!).  The indoor match at Old Bridge is a terrific way to be introduced into USPSA because its a much more informal (lower round count/less complicated stages) match but you still get the supervision aspect as well as Vlad's new shooter briefing, which is worth the price of admission on it's own. lol

    Big thanks to all the folks who had to bear with this newbie. You guys & gal were great! I'm hooked but have prep work to do.

     

    Kevin - take Vlad's advise... There is a lot to take in at once. Start with the pistol action game - won't hurt to also watch a 3 gun match before diving in.

     

    Vlad G and Werder.  Thnx.  Yeah, I don't intend on getting into a 3-Gun match just yet.  I'm not familiar with how they're run at this point and the last thing I want to do is create a safety issue or even slow a match down because I'm unfamiliar with the procedures.   I just want to get used to shooting at a range again then I'll watch some matches before I enter one.  The USPSA matches, from what I've seen on the web, seem less complex and a better place to start.  So thanks again for the good advice.  That's pretty much what I had in mind.


  7. I ride a stationary trainer indoors. Too effing dangerous to ride on the road. And the bike people that have a brain know where they should and shouldn't be. Only problem is 80% of the ones you see out there are clueless. They THINK they're Lance Armstrong but they're more like Roseanne Barr in spandex.


  8. Usually, the problem is using a card at a hijacked retail outlet, or at one that has an employee being paid to skim cc numbers. Ours was stolen at the Spider-Man photo stop in universal studios once. Then at a gas station at the entrance to the holland tunnel.e

     

    The crooks also put skimmers at ATMs. Even the drive through ATMs at a legit bank over a weekend after the bank has closed.

     

    They also can use tools to infect pcs to do screen grabs and log keystrokes. These tasks are eminently easy for someone who knows what they're doing.


  9. It might actually be a good thing to have additional meetings with different groups of people. And I mean groups of people here. It could help with getting more people involved. But it should be coordinated here and have an agenda that's posted here. Then someone get the minutes, action items, etc to who ever is in charge of keeping track of what's been discussed. Multiple gatherings but centrally coordinated.


  10. Ok, I may be new here but why would anyone want a weapon for home defense if you had to go find it when you had to defend your home? Seems to me a compact pistol in a holster is what you would need. A home invasion has to be a tense situation. Going to retrieve your weapon might waste the time you needed to not get killed.

     

    Only time I'd want a weapon in a safe, and it would have to be a safe in my bedroom that I can open quickly, is when I'm sleeping or maybe actually in the pool swimming. Just my newbie opinion.


  11. Topher, I hadn't shot regularly in years and years. I used to shoot a Jennings Super T back in the 70s. Hunting and some casual competition. So I wanted to start up again. I ended up with a Bear Attitude package. It's a single cam system and came with a sight, short stabilizer, rest and a tied nock loop. And a quiver. The accessories aren't great, but they're ok for me at this point. I went with a 70 lb draw but adjusted it to its minimum. Which as best I can tell is about 58 lbs. they make a 60 lb model which I wish I went with. Would like to get it down 5 or 6 pound less.

     

    As far as the bow goes, I like it a lot. The draw is smooth, it's light enough for me and is pretty simple to adjust. You don't need a press to adjust the draw length. Total cost before tax was $399. Only shooting I've been able to do is at 15 yards in my basement. Once I sighted it in, it shot 2" groups at that distance. Before I got tired...... I'm sure there are better bows out there but I doubt I'd notice the difference. I'm happy with my new Bear. If you are trying out bows at a shop, try this one. They sell it bare. With the money saved you can pick some nice accessories. Good luck and have fun shooting.


  12. NICS submitted 11:30am Saturday Mar 21st. As of 5pm.... No response from NICS office on mine or anyone else's INSTANT background check. On Friday, the near useless govt. employees at the NICS left at 2pm because of the snow. Nearly everyone else in the private sector continued to work all day. This departure probably created a backlog.

     

    My FFL dealer checked with a few other shops and was told they had zero NICS responses on Saturday as well.

     

    Great system. As far as it being fixed...it isn't. And it won't be any time soon given what I've seen in our state govt. workforce.
