This is what I think I'm going to do... first, I'm going to let replies roll in here for a few days.

IF indeed it seems that the majority are calling BS on this "customary monthly storage fee" stuff, then I'm going to call the FFL back. I'm going to tell him: 1) that I went home and checked my notes from the original call with his employee (and there's no notation of "storage fees") which backs up my recollection, and 2) that I'm a prolific poster who shared my concerns in a large online forum and through crowd sourcing it seems like this is a highly irregular practice and I'm now being asked to share his info online --- how would he prefer to handle this?  If this is a bogus charge, I'll give him the chance to make it right.

If you were not told or its not on the notes, then you were duped.  Dont feel bad about it, we all get duped.

I do feel bad! Very bad indeed. I like to think of myself as someone who doesn't get duped.

But I think I need to let it go, too. I've had a very hard year. This is not even close to the worst thing that happened. This is not the thing to go to war over... or even lose sleep over for that matter. Of course, if I had my notes in front of me, I would have put up more of a fuss. But, it's water under the bridge now.

Damn, this gun better shoot straight! LMAO. In the future, I'll probably do things differently: 1) never buy until the permit is in-hand, and 2) save up and buy something shiny and brand-new (unless it's a collectible/antique). I think I will be happier in the long run if I do those things. Lessons learned!

  3. Again, not a gun genius here... LOL! So, please help me understand. Let's say I bought that gadget AND a Burris red dot site. Down the road, I want to move the Burris red dot sight to a newer gun... a newer gun would be pre-drilled so no problem there.

But, this gun (the Ruger) when then have this plate that can only accept another Burris brand red dot, correct? So, then I guess I could put the iron sight back in? Or, would it make more sense to get this more "generic" type of mount based on the same principle? Then I could put any brand on the older gun that I wanted to?

    https://www.amazon.com/Ruger-Drill-Scope-Mount-Weigand/dp/B003LXPX3W/ref=pd_sbs_200_3?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B003LXPX3W&pd_rd_r=GA0ZMEVF9381FZ9TR3QA&pd_rd_w=6GZuA&pd_rd_wg=weGpo&psc=1&refRID=GA0ZMEVF9381FZ9TR3QA

I just happened to see this on Amazon. Could you weigh in on that? I guess I don't want to throw money on gadgets that won't be "universal" if that makes sense. H-E-L-P M-E!

I've never had an FFL charge me storage on a gun he sold me or one that i was having transferred. Well, ain't that interesting?! I'll see what the crowd says. Was I duped? Now I feel even worse! My mk3 hunter has the holes for the rail but i instead removed the rear sight and got a mounting plate for my burris fastfire 3 instead.  Maybe this is an option for you? OK, maybe that IS an option. This is all Greek to me. Can you please tell me... what is the brand/type of mounting plate so I can look that up? Thx.

  5. Damn you! I was in a rare feel-sorry-for-me pissy-rant kind of mood the last 2 days, then I just read your post --- and you totally ruined my well-deserved moment of anger and self-pity. Double-damn you! LOL.

Seriously, nice post. Thanks for sharing. Puts things in perspective. :D

  6. Interesting you should ask... I picked up my used Ruger 22/45 just this week. I'm so dismayed, disgusted, ticked off... I actually decided to hold off on posting until I calmed down, but since you prompted me, Zeke...here goes... (Trigger Warning: If pathetic whining, wailing and bitching triggers you, please stop reading now...)

How did I miss this?... The FFL I picked it up from gave me the shock of my life when he told me that he had been charging me $15 a month for storage!! Ummm, I'm 100% certain his employee did NOT tell me that when I arranged to ship the gun to them (I even went home, found my original notes - no notation of that). I feel like a dipshit. Yes, I had a lot of family/eldercare issue this year which threw a wrench into every single freakin' aspect of my life, but you can bet your bippie if I knew I was being charged, I would have gotten there sooner. I told him, calmly and nicely (twice): "You and your staff really ought to tell your customers about that policy from the start - some will be first-timers like me" - but he didn't bite and I could tell he wasn't going to budge on the charge. So, is monthly storage a customary charge?

To make matters worse, since this is an older Ruger, it is not pre-drilled for a red dot sight.... that i DID already know, but I was counting on my uncle's estimate of what that service would cost, because he's very knowledgeable on all things guns. So, I started calling around to gunsmiths - turns out, uncle's estimate is perhaps off (probably hasn't had a gun worked on in some time). He thought maybe 30 bucks for the job, and so far, $25 PER FREAKIN' HOLE(!) is the best quote I've gotten. I'm still investigating.

Long story short, I'm well on my way to having "The World's Most Expensive, Used, Beat-up, Fugly-looking Gun".  I couldn't be prouder! Seriously, I could cry (and trust me, I only cry at funerals - so that's how damn bad I feel). Is this my fault? Yes, of course it is. Ultimately, buyer beware. I own that. Which is why if  storage charges are indeed customary... I will not name the FFL. I certainly won't use him again personally, but he's a small business person and he was otherwise pleasant and informative, so I just won't trash him on here. I'm willing to own my own idiocy. But, I'm still mad... sad... feeling like a dupe, etc. I'm going to put some rounds through my expensive, fugly gun for the first time this Friday. Hopefully, it shoots like a peach and I won't be quite so disheartened.

But, still in a quandary... keep sinking mo' money into the gun with the gunsmithing charges? Or bite the bullet (so to speak), consider it a life lesson and a loss (maybe a guest gun?)... and put that money  instead towards a new 22 already set up to mount a red dot? Either way, I'm going to be blowing more money than I ever wished... and the whole point was to do this cheaply since my eldercare issues really pounded my income this past year. So, I'm off to a brilliant start in this new hobby!

  7. It seems some of the events happening recently on today's campuses for instance are creating a backlash - even in the unlikeliest of circles. Perhaps some of those older liberals like Dreyfus who upheld the idea of free speech in their youth... are growing increasingly uncomfortable about how so many of today's college kids want to tear down what they fought for so long ago.

I agree that taking civics out of education was a bad choice. People are waking up to that. Good for Mr. Dreyfus! Perhaps the fact that he's had a long Hollywood career will allow this movement to get more "traction" than if it was put forth by someone on the right. Hey, whatever works!

  8. I'm waiting for the " what should I get" thread.

    Waiting anxiously

Of course, at some point I will come to NJGF - "the fountain of all gun knowledge". But, right now I'm diligently going through several older threads on here re: "what guns are good for shooters with small hands" - as well as some articles with a similar theme. I mean, I don't have midget hands... but they're pretty darn small.

I'll post my target list once it's done for everyone's review (... seems lazy not to do the research legwork). Though, oh my goodness, as I'm typing... it seems peeps are posting suggestions already. Oh my...I'm going to be so confused by the choices, my head's going to implode....

  9. OK, well... I got my permits today. 81 days after I applied. And the issue date on the permit is 4/15 (pragmatically making them "80-day permits" rather than the 90-day permits I applied for).

The troopers I dealt with at Perryville and Trenton were professional, pleasant, and replied to my (limited) phonecalls very promptly. I can't speak for what happens at other barracks, but as others here have mentioned, I think it's the system itself that is irrevocably broken. I do not blame the troopers. They are cogs in a smashed wheel.

My references were checked locally, via snail mail. The case then went to Trenton for other steps and was "approved" in the system on March 16th - more than a month ago! From there, it fell into a bureaucratic vortex - waiting for someone to type the info into a template, print it out on a dot matrix printer (since it's a form with multiple pressure-sensitive sheets, it can't be printed on every printer). It was then shipped to Troop B HQ, where it would be picked up twice weekly by the troopers from my barracks. Ridiculous!

Even a Luddite like me can see this system cries out for improved technology. From the little I gathered, IMO, the NJSP needs to do this:

    1. do all references by phone (eliminating the snail mail delay on that part of the process)

    2. redesign the form to print out on regular copy paper, with 4 signature fields to duplicate the 4 carbon copies (so the permits can be printed on a regular laser printer, eliminating the need for the dot matrix printers - who the HELL uses those pressure sensitive carbon copies anymore???)

    3. develop a database (or add features to the current one): a) a countdown (aging) feature so everyone involved can see which ones are nearing the 30 day mark...and feel some urgency, and b) an add-on that flows the approval info straight from the database into a "print-ready" template (eliminating the need for administrative staff in Trenton to type that info into their own template - which is apparently, astoundingly how it's done now).

    4. include an automatic "sort" so that approved permits are sorted into separate electronic files based on the barracks requesting it (eliminating the need for any manual "sorting" either at Trenton or at Troop A, B, etc.).

    5. send those individual files electronically to each appropriate local barracks, where they can print them out on regular laser printers (eliminating the Pony Express trooper transport system which adds days/weeks into the process - and unfairly cuts into someone's 90-day purchase period).

I don't know the whole process, but I suspect what I just laid out would probably eliminate at least 30-45 days from this process. I'm sure anyone in the IT field (or even most 12-year-old kids these days!) could come up with something a gazillion times better. And we're not taking about technology for a Level 4 biohazard containment lab, for god's sake -- some of this is more akin to a "mail merge" in MS Word and probably not even that costly. What this tells me is that meeting the 30-day legal requirement has been a VERY low priority for the NJSP for a long, long time.

If you ask me... it's probably STILL not a high priority. Why would the higher-ups at the NJSP invest a dime in real process improvement when the person making the request is essentially a lame-duck governor? They probably figure by the time they improve the process, there'll be a Democrat as governor - and that person will want the permitting process to be as slow as possible.

In summary: NEW JERSEY SUCKS. Thank you for letting me vent about it though!

  10. You can't go just by their ages either. Unexpected stuff happens in life. Don't forget, even the relatively young Roberts has had 2 unexplained seizures, raising a red flag about his longevity right there. And I'm guessing most (or all?) of the Supremes lead busy lives with substantial travel... arguably increasing their chances of devastating or even fatal accident. Any one of them could be diagnosed with a serious illness, etc.

    ,

It's impossible to say what will happen to the balance on the court going forward. By all means, be hopeful...just don't count your chickens before they hatch!

  11. Zeke, how good is the info on this "excuse"?  I too have been waiting too long with the State Police.  A different Barracks last year came across by now.

BobA... there's a similar thread going on this, here:   http://www.njgunforums.com/forum/index.php/topic/85875-new-software-slowing-down-permits-at-njsp/?hl=%2Bsoftware+%2Bnjsp

It was started because I had been told by my NJSP barracks (Perryville) that there was some "new software" slowing things down just recently in Trenton. One of the other posters who called into Trenton a few weeks later also heard mention of "new software" by the person he spoke with. Later, I called Trenton and was told by someone else there that there were unveiling a lot of process changes (perhaps new software was one of them?). Long story short, it seems like they're planning to have a better, faster process in place (the state police that is), by the beginning of NEXT year... but until that time there will be changes o'plenty and those changes may slow things down now and again.

Not sure how that impacts other police departments, if it does at all. The one thing I've been able to figure out is there is ZERO consistency in the ways these are done around the state. For example, some depts. check ref's by phone, some mail the forms, others apparently don't do them at all.  That's ridiculous.

  12. Trump is letting the military do their thing, which is called WINNING.

Bingo! I hate war.. as all rational, decent people do. It's an awful, awful thing that leaves people (mostly young people) dead or maimed for life. But, dammit, if you're going to go to war... go in to WIN it!!

Don't hobble these poor bastards and make it more difficult for them to achieve their goal. Take the shackles off. A lot of the "rules of engagement" in recent years just put these young soldiers at risk IMO. Can't do this, can't use that... NONSENSE!

  13. I have to give credit where it's due:

The Second Amendment guarantees individuals a fundamental right to keep and bear arms for self-defense ...Further, “the Second Amendment extends, prima facie, to all instruments that constitute bearable arms, even those that were not in existence at the time of the founding.”

If it's a trap as some have suggested it appears they have trapped themselves. "Guarantees" "right" "all instruments" and "even those that were not in existence" is pretty clear, explicit. It is unlikely that this court, knowing full well the legal fiction created by our legislature, upheld by other courts, and gleefully enforced by our police, would use this precise language with all manners of mumbo-jumbo available to them to avoid even addressing this case substantively -- much less ruling favorably.

On the face of it my best Armenian buddy has achieved more through this lawsuit than the combined efforts of every other pro-2A group operating in NJ up to this time. I am truly impressed.

I agree that the wording is damning for Sweeney and her ilk. It will be difficult to maneuver around that (though they'll surely make a Herculean attempt)!

However, what's with that last line on your post? Seriously, just curious. I haven't followed this case... and admittedly don't know the background of it AT ALL. But, a pro-2A group is clearly listed as a plaintiff on that document --- isn't it reasonable to share the credit for the win among both plaintiffs? I think we would all like to see 2A groups have MORE wins and BIGGER wins in this state, but I think it's also good to not be stingy with praise when there IS a win! Is there a back story here that says differently?

  14. OK, I called that # in Trenton, got a very nice lieutenant on the phone from the Firearms unit. He couldn't get into the system at the moment, so I figured I'd pick his brain since I had him on the phone... I asked him about the Gov's directive, exactly how they are collecting the data, from what date to what date, etc.

According to him, they are not formally doing that data collection yet... but they have been studying how to do it (it's a fairly complex process apparently with a lot of moving parts), they will put it in place very soon, and in anticipation, the unit has already made several internal changes that have improved processing time. He said those changes got the processing time down from a high of 90+ days to about 55 currently. Now, keep in mind - he's talking about the time within his unit apparently... not talking about getting it back to the local barracks... that's a whole 'nother can of worms. The thing that blew me away (in a negative way)... is that I told him that by this point my permit was approved roughly a month ago - he believed that it still wouldn't have hit the local barracks yet! So, there's definitely some kind of MAJOR holdup that happens between the approval in Trenton, the physical act of completing the permit, and then getting it back to the local barracks. (That seems to jive with what some of you are seeing).

Also, he did share that he felt certain that in the future the "clock" would start ticking from the point that all the applicant's info is in: your paper form, your online criminal history request, AND your returned reference forms. On the one hand, that seems reasonable to me... however, if your local barracks is s-l-o-w about mailing out the reference forms, for instance, that won't count against permit processing time... and that does NOT seem all that reasonable. It seems to me they need some sort of performance measures at the local barracks - like "all references must be mailed within 2 business days of receipt" - maybe they do that now already?

He admitted frustration on the part of the Trenton Firearms Unit --- that they all want to see the process move faster, and that he believes there will be a greatly improved, speedier system in place by the beginning of the year because they're throwing so much effort at it now (I'm guessing that's all due to pressure created by that directive).

Other than that... I will just say that he just seemed professional and quite willing to answer questions and be helpful. Personally, I always appreciate that.

  15. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe part of the governor's directive requires municipalities and the NJSP to collect data going forward on their permit turnaround time and then make that data available.

Here's my thought though... how much would you like to bet they're recording the data at the point of the initial "approval" in Trenton... and NOT recording it from the date the local barracks calls the citizen to say "your permit is approved, come pick it up"...? If I'm right, the entire data collection process is rendered utterly meaningless. It will VASTLY undercount in favor of the police, by not showing the true reality of the wait times.  It won't reflect that whole backend process of weeks if not months after permits are approved and logged in the computer but before they make their slow, meandering way (by drunken Pony Express it seems) back to the local barracks. (Cynically, I think they'll collect that data any way they can that conveniently avoids "shining a light" on where the biggest delays/breakdowns are happening.)

Just curious... does anyone have insight on this data collection?... has it started already?... and how is it being counted?

  16. Sooo what ya gonna get?

    Hmmmn? Hmmmn?

I DON'T KNOW!!! LOL. So, now I'm going to spend a few months seriously exploring. My only real experience is with a borrowed .22 pistol. I have 3 permits coming. 1 is spoken for (a little Ruger 22/45 I bought awhile back, but still sitting at FFL). I want to pick that up asap, but then I'll still have 2 more permits (if I even need them - maybe I'll prefer rifles, who knows?).

Starting this week, I'm going to borrow (or rent) every firearm I can get my hands on... (a relative has a good collection to pluck from, thankfully)... and also try out every shooting sport a beginner can access... and just figure out what I enjoy the most. I figure that's probably the best way to do this. I've been practicing bulls eye, so I'll also sign up for a local competition or 2... and see how that goes too. Between all of that, by end of July, I hope to lock down my choice to: 1 shooting sport, and hopefully, the firearm models I want for that particular sport. Then, I'll shop around for best price. I'm guessing another purchase this August possibly?? (Hey, how long do these permits last anyway? Will I need an extension?)

And God bless those of you with large collections, but I already know that won't be me...this is NOT a cheap hobby! I'd rather pour my dollars into 1 thoughtfully selected firearm (the best I can possibly afford) that I'll love and use often... rather than several mediocre quality firearms that were just stupid impulse buys (mind you, not saying any of you collectors were impulsive... just saying what I personally can or cannot afford to do).

It's a mind-boggling process --- like being really hungry in a restaurant with 500 items on the menu! Oy.

  17. I'm no lawyer... but logically, that does sound like a potentially YUGE development! IF they hear the case... and IF they strike that down... sounds like it would pull the rug right out from under NJ's justifiable need.

That's the only way NJ is ever going to change IMO.... if there are S.C. findings making clear the unconstitutionality of these silly ass rules... and giving people strong grounds on which to file lawsuits. It won't be fast though - at least I don't think so. I think it will still have to wind it's way through the courts through individual lawsuits... or am I wrong?

  18. Personally? I wouldn't take a job unless I had those answers. You could reach out to whichever interviewer held the highest level in the company. If they were the same level, reach out to the one you "clicked" with the best... say you're very interested in the opportunity but have a few more quick questions to discuss in order to make a firm decision and could you pop by early this week and spend a few more minutes with him. Give him several days/time that would work - and let him pick one. (You want to do it in person, if at all possible, so you can see/read his face as he's giving answers. We all have a natural instinct to pick up truth vs. lie. So, trust your gut. Keep it brief too - respect his time. Ask for 20-30 min and do not let it go over the allotted time. THANK HIM for the additional time. Tell him you'll give him an answer within 48 hours... and then do that. You want to come off as serious, not high maintenance - not like you're stringing them along).

If nothing else, by asking strategic, forward-focused questions... you will immediately distinguish yourself as a serious guy who's looking to work hard and progress with the company. Frankly, that puts you on the map.... as not just another guy looking for an extra 4 bucks an hour. And, honestly, I don't really see a downside to that!

Edit: You said this about your current job: I feel since I work at a large terminal, there's only so much growth there. When you say "feel" - that tips me off that you may not have really asked the questions there either. Otherwise, I think you would have said: "I know there's not much growth there." You're not asking enough questions IMO. And that's why you're struggling with this decision - you have insufficient information. You're asking US - people on a gun forum - questions, which is fine... but you really need to be asking more questions of THEM (current and prospective employers).

  19. I won't pretend to know anything about chassis mechanic jobs! But, my general advice to anyone serious about their career is to look beyond the immediate roles on the table. Assuming you have some years left in your career... where's the best opportunity for professional growth? You resent your slacker coworkers - that tells me you're a hard worker. The fact that your bosses love you back that up.  So, have you fully leveraged the respect that have for you? Are you on track to being a "boss" too?... or perhaps in some kind of lead/trainer role? Have you even had that discussion with them? Do those roles even exist in either place? If not, which company seems to be on the better growth path? This is the perfect time to dig up all that info. I fact, I would suggest you have that discussion with both companies...

"Now I know what this job looks like... but as a hard worker and someone serious about my career, I want to know what could the next one look like?"

"Who has progressed in this company?"

"What was it about their skills and talents that stood out to you?"

"Is there any additional training or certification I should be looking at in order to progress?"

If so... "Would you be willing to pay for all or some of that?"

The answers you get may make your decision much easier. (Be subtle - don't tip off your current employer that you're looking or have an offer.  In my experience, I've almost never seen that work out well). Good luck!

  20. 4 of my last 5 pets were "on in years" when they came to me --- either through rescue leagues, or from a little old lady who went into a nursing home, etc., etc. Paid between 75 (for the birds) and 250 (for the dogs). Each one a WONDERFUL pet... and I was delighted to give them a home. So, I tend to agree. That said, everyone's got their own dream... and are free to spend their money as they please. Lots of people on here who also might not pay top dollar for a particular exotic pet... would spend thousands "tricking out" a perfectly functional firearm to customize it to their liking. I say... whatever makes ya happy!  As long as it's not hurting anyone else, your money is YOUR money - to be spent how you see fit.

But again, raccoon is a great choice!
