That's not an Iris in the bond films. That's a first person view from a bullet in a chamber. The "iris" you are seeing is the rifling of the barrel i.e.: the lands and grooves.

I wonder how many people realize that? I didn't until I owned (i.e. had to clean) a gun.

I think in NJ, it might be a bit problematic  In Oklahoma, perhaps not so much. It's all about the prosecutor and what message they want to send...

I have only the news report and not the incident report, but according to the article, "Freeman, a neighbor, grabbed his revolver, entered the home, saw Foster trying to kill the children and shot him twice in the back, Bratcher said." I'm concerned that the lack of warning, and the fact that he shot the man in the back might be issues for the police. That being said, there was a lot going on in that bathroom and a mother and children were in danger. I don't know what's required under OK law, but I hope that they consider all of the evidence as they weigh whether he should face charges.

NOT a Christian Bale fan..? Good gawd, Cereza... what are you, woman? A soulless, black-hearted heathen?   Who doesn't like Christian Bale?? And here I thought you and I were well on our way to being Internet besties.... and then you go and say something like that. (sigh)

However... you did manage to save yourself from complete humiliation IMO with the Nosferatu reference. What a creepy classic! A "must see" for any fan of the horror genre.

While I know better than to make assumptions about an actor because of a character he portrays, there was always a connection in my mind between him and "Patrick Bateman", so it's fair to say we started out on the wrong foot. Then came his Terminator: Salvation set meltdown and the domestic altercation with his mom and sister, and that was it. Too many negative associations. The man became a big tall glass of NOPE. It's not a loss; Hollywood has continued to chuck hot Englishmen at my eyeballs: Idris Elba, Benedict Cumberbatch, the aforementioned Tom Hardy…keep 'em comin' Britannia!

You're mocking The Prestige? Those are fightin' words. No, it wasn't Inception, but still... 2 tasty magicians in dark, atmospheric, Victorian London? Criminy... what's not to like? I say you have no soul, Cereza. No soul!

What can I say, I have high standards. By the way, 1 tasty magician—not at his most Wolverine sadly. I am NOT a Chrisitian Bale fan. :negative:

Of course now this begs the question: has anyone pulled off a really successful Gothic Horror since Nosferatu

Christopher Nolan is a terrific director - a real craftsman.

*cough* Interstellar *cough* The Prestige *cough*

My hope is that Dunkirk is in keeping with Nolan's masterpieces (I think Inception was his best), but it's not a given that it will be fantastic.

And where's the love for Cillian Murphy?

If they take the case, and if they rule that carrying is covered, then NJ will pass a law requiring an expensive burdensome training course that is only given during the week.

I'm not saying that wouldn't happen, but how long could it withstand a legal challenge?  Isn't one of the arguments behind not requiring ID to vote that it disproportionately burdens the poor because of the fees involved in obtaining state ID? The left can't shouldn't argue that $40 violates the 15th, 19th and 26th, but that {insert ridiculous cost of CC training course here} is no impediment to the 2nd.

Combine this, with a lack of discretion due to the wearing of body cameras (more arrests for minor offenses when previously discretion was used and you cut folks loose with a warning)

Why? This sounds like a LE policy issue, not a problem with cameras.

wait where does that say $100 a year

The $100 fee is proposed in A800

There are currently 183 proposed bills for "PUBLIC SAFETY - WEAPONS" currently milling about the NJ Legislature (including one reducing magazine limits to FIVE rounds), and if Phil Murphy is elected expect to see the lion's share to written into NJ law.

ETA: I just realized A800 was withdrawn… I'm happy about that but I wonder why?

this is important news. tbh i just scanned it, are we grandfathered in with our current FIDs?

Of course not. There are an estimated 1 million gun owners in NJ—you think they're going to pass up the opportunity to get $100 a year out of each of them?

Another thing I can't understand is why the article was created at all.

This happened last year and was essentially open and shut.  THere were no smoking guns and no new evidence.

The one-year anniversary was probably the justification used during the pitch meeting, but this is really anti-gun sentiment masquerading as a sports piece. Check out the author's website: http://www.jeffpearlman.com/guns-and-courage-and-cowardice/

Well, the "traffic enforcement" cameras are one thing...  We have them down here in FL also but, likewise, i think they are also turned off as well or, at least, the "infractions" recorded aren't being enforced.

I'm thinking more of the stationary ALPRs that only record licenses that whiz by.  These wouldn't be at traffic lights or stops. They'd usually be found on major higways and on high poles. As stated, I know of a pair that are on I-80 near the Jefferson Township pedestrian bridge.  There's another pair that I know of that's on US 31 in East Amwell, just north of Hopewell.  I'm sure there are others.

They sound like traffic enforcement cameras on steroids. I don't remember seeing any (probably wouldn't have recognized one if I did) but if the Feds are funding them and they're a money maker, they're here to stay.

I wonder if that's the tech they're using for the EZ-Pass express (55mph) lanes?

On one of my Florida gun forums, an article was posted in re:  a county in FL (Volusia County to be exact (DeLand, Deltona, Daytona Beach, etc.)) adding ALPR cameras on poles at various points along Volusia County roadways. This made me recall that NJ had tried this previously (I know of two sets of ALPR camera poles personally). But I think, IIRC, that they were not in active use when I left, due to various legal issues. I was wondering what the current status is of ALPR cameras and whether or not they are in use, today...

I thought they were turned off for good, but the last article I found says results from a DOT study are pending and the ticket cameras might be turned back on (unless the specific townships don't renew contracts with the for-profit company, as happened in Brick in 2014).

  15. Not everyone operates a storefront with the space to store multiple customer firearms for months on end, especially if they're not making money from the sale, but if they're going to charge for the service that needs to be stated up front, in writing. I really want to hear this FFL's explanation.

  16. can you be more specific with your question?

I may have already answered it above

I won't dismiss something or someone because it or they are in the minority. I'll dismiss gun control because most of it is built on fallible arguments, but I'm with Hamilton on avoiding the "tyranny of the majority".

ETA: Allergy medication is making me fuzzy…  I guess my question is why do you think it's a minority number of states that are the problem, and not politicians (regardless of state) who stand to profit from continual disagreement on the topic?

  17. no

A minority of the states can't get it right.

    A minority

    Meaning?

There are more republicans in the house and senate than democrats.  Usually, they can say that the democrats wouldn't cooperate.  We now see who is the real problem.

Term limits. Term limits. Term limits.

The most important thing for Trump to accomplish is getting the right people on the supreme court.  The second most important is term limits.

    Everything else is just gravy.

We did this little dance already back in 1995. SCOTUS ruled that without an amendment to the US Constitution term-limits are not happening at the federal level, and between the required supermajority and ratification, that's not going to happen. Politicians can provide all the soundbites and rhetoric their constituents want, but willingly put a limit on their own power? We can't even get these guys to give up the power of voting their own pay raises. You really think they're going to vote for something that severs them from the government teat?
